Mine has been doing it only when I take the guard off and get the string out more than what is required. More string makes engine run hotter. Once string is at correct length it stops cutting off but once it gets too long it will keep cutting off. I just leave the guard on so I don’t have to worry about anymore. After using it for a whole season I came to the conclusion this is the problem people are having. Trimmer works great other than that.
Anonymous Can confirm, same problem, didn’t put the guard on on ran it the length I do my commercial gas. It did very well, had lots of power till it started cutting out every 2 seconds. Cut down the length and worked fine but less efficient than gas one at a shorter length line. Feel there may be a heat and load sensor.
I really want to like this unit but am having the same overheating issue. Its 2 days old, I did some trimming with it last night it started cutting out after a being run about 5 minutes. I can hit release then hit the throttle it will take off again. Today I used the edger which is a beast until it starts overheating and cutting out. I can let off trigger and go right back to running. Dosen't matter high or low speed, trimmer or edger it cuts out after being run a few minutes. The machine is built like a tank and when its running works like a commercial machine. The cutting out on day 1 and day 2. I think day 3 its going back to live at homedepot.
I think I have figured it out. mine was doing this too, I was very frustrated. Figured out that it was the way I was holding it. With my bad back I was holding it close to my body and this must have been restricting the air flow. Now I hold the motor end away from my body and it works fine now. I did about two hours of heavy brush cutting today went through a 6 amp hour and one 12 amp hour battery and it did not stop once, woohoo!!!!
We have 4 Q/L heads, all of them are about a month old with 2 days of use per week, maybe 2 hrs per day. We use 3-5-6-8-9-12 ah batteries. All of the units overheat after approx. 10-15 minutes of continuous string trimming (14” or 16”) or with the edging attachments. Even when using the articulating hedge trimmers they overheated during use. Once overheated, they do not operate continuously until cooled. 30-40 mins.
Mine does this also. Its frustrating but it only does it when i do tall grass for like 10 minute full throtle 16" diametre with twisted line. When it start doing this i have to let it cool down little bit . I already open this trimer to see inside and it have plenty of room for bigger motor for real the motor is so small inside this quick lok perhaps a biger motor on the gen 3 will help a lot
I've had no issues with mine... had it two years now I guess. Mine came with the upgraded easy load head, so I'm guessing it's a second generation model, but I don't really know. I'm not a professional landscaper, so I've only used it as it came out of the box. I usually use a 9.0aH battery, but it works fine with all my batteries. Milwaukee has a good warranty and repair program. Even if it's out of warranty, repairs are generally fair priced.
After 4 replacements, it's the string length. I changed back to the factory position and went into an uncut field of knee high weeds and tree branches that grew to the ground. I set a timer and weighed in trying to break the damn thing. 2 12amp batteries and 50 minutes later, I had to concede defeat and take a break. This one is 1/2 on me for thinking I knew better and could change the string length. The balance of the "finger" is pointed at Milwaukee for not putting a warning in the manual (like guys like me read the damn things anyway). I'm a happy camper now and continue to be a Milwaukee tool fan.
Hello, thank you for your comment. I’m currently experiencing this issue. Are you still having issues with your unit, or are you correct in assuming the string length was the only issue with this product? Thank you!
I’ve had 2 Q/L units overheat with the edger attachments on them. Not the string trimmer. So I’m experiencing overheating due to usage. We have 4 Q/L units and all of them are overheating with the string trimmer attachments on. The operator manual mentions that you are able to switch between the factory 14”or 16” string length without any mention of overheating.
Funny u you pi say that. On my first usage my string was extended and began the problem. I never thought anything of it and was about to return it. Then yesterday I decided to give it a go one more time. Cut with less string and never had the problem again. Then I read this and it has me thinking.
Same problem here - with two machines. Both with guard on - after 20-25 minuted starts cutting out. Worked flawlessly untill we started using it for longer periods. I am going back to Makita…!
I had to run the shorter string length, I had flipped the cutter around but started having this issue. The trimmer also seems to be line sensitive, some catches far too much wind and will cause similar problems.
Had the same problem, finally just took it back to Home Depot. They ended up giving me store credit, used it toward a echo 266. Been happy ever since! Love Milwaukee tools but man they blew it on this one 👎🏻👎🏻👎🏻
This thing has been a beast for me for over a year, maybe 2… even with the Death Star brush attachment, I have it opened up right now, the motor is hot AF… cleaning it out, I had dust and debris.
Mine is one year old, i store mine in garage, take it out trim around house curb, side walk about 30 minutes of use with m18 12 battery. Its warm in garage where unit is stored, i store batteries inside house works fine, When i load load it on truck 30 minute drive to other house is heating laying in truck bed, heating up motor of unit, during the drive the batteries ride in ac cab with me. When i get to work site , install battery on unit, in 10 minutes unit starts to cut off, frustrating, i stop reapply trigger to starts up, works but its constant stops dragging on time it takes to quickly do small job ,have to take 10 minute breaks , In shade, check battery still 4 or 5 bars, working in Texas Dallas area at 11am its aready in the 90's degrees, is this trimmer not able to handle the heat working environment, will try letting unit starting with it cooled after riding in truck bed heat 30 minutes, to see if it makes a difference, i suspect it will, the guy that took his unit to repair center was told fault could not be duplicated, its like a lab control environment of course fault will not duplicate, suspect its unit design problem, if unit has to be babied, not handle real world use, home owner use, it a piece of#$^$@, Will not buy another unit, will us for Light duty use only, keeping my stal units.
I bought a different style. The motor is at the rotary head. I've cut through thick fescue with no problems. Have a M18 chainsaw too. Some of the best tools I have ever bought!
I only use 5ah...mine sometimes shuts off and the 2nd and 4th then 1st and 3rd light will flash. The battery feels warm so I suspect mine was overheating
So once its starts doing this it will always do it? Ive had mine a year and it just started doing it. I put it through heavy use last year and never had any problems at all. But i havent bv tried it again since it did the cut off the other day. Im just wondering if continued use will damage it further.
Mine does it with the weed wacker head on it only. But when i switch it to the edger or chainsaw it doesnt do it with them. Disappointed in Milwaukee for this. If anyone happens to find out that there is a recall or something like that for this issue please let me know.
My dewalt trimmer does this as well..it’s good for about a min then it starts this bs.. but When it works its great only problem is that it doesn’t work. I bet it has less than 1 hour run time too smh
Same issue on my mine. What junk, It’s the thermal overload on the motor. I have two HD12 batteries and swapping a cool battery onto the unit it continues to go into thermal overload. Definitely not designed for Tx heat. My Milwaukee fuel m18 grinder does the same thing when it’s 100F plus outside. Super disappointed with Milwaukee on this one.
Looks like shorter trim line solved problem, but still it need redesign especially battery connector overheating problem, they should make 2x18v like new blower or something

I lengthened the line again, and it started stopping again it seems to sense when there is too much torque? try shortening your line especially if you are not using the guard
I have the same problem too! Took it into a warranty authorized shop they could not get it to glitch. So what is this, a heating issue on the Motor or battery?
I’d be happy if my trimmer would do a reliable heat protection shutdown. I got a quick lok string trimmer and a brand new 12ah high output battery. Used it in my garden for about 30 minutes. Then it went off. No more lights on the battery. As I took off the battery from the string trimmer I felt the battery was way too hot and sadly the plastic around the contact just melted!!! So did the plastic on the string trimmer. Both were garbage. After Milwaukee replaced both, the battery and the trimmer I used it the first time with a 5.5ah high output battery with no heat problems until it was empty. Then I put the new 12ah battery on the trimmer and used it for 15 minutes. Then the exact same thing happened again!!!! Battery melted and damaged the also brand new trimmer as before…. With my 5.5ah ho battery I can use the trimmer like 15 minutes until it shuts down like the one in this video. With one of my two 12ah ho batteries it runs till it gets very hot and I have to stop after 15-20 minutes because I am afraid it will melt again.. With my other 12ah battery it just shuts down after 1-2 minutes using it, just like the video is showing.. The battery is still cool but the tool gets hot very fast.. I mean come on Milwaukee! Three replacements and none of them working properly? I should have bought an ego instead….. Update: I’ll send this m18 trimmer back and just ordered an ego.
I’ve been using a Milwaukee trimmer for over two years with about 6-10 lawns a day and it’s been great. Mine would cut out at times when I used the larger string size in deep grass, but when I used the smaller sized string it didn’t happen. I also use the larger 9AH and 12AH batteries. Maybe, you just got a bad unit or battery.

My drill does this when I am putting a hand on the back to push harder and I knotice it gets extremely hot because I have blocked the holes.
So from what I see the internal fan ( much like a drill fan) stops spinning hence the overheating. Am yet to take it apart but noticed it today
I wonder if you clip the temp sensor probe if the motor will smoke or it will just keep working?
Well, the connection between tool and battery went so hot that the plastic just melted…. My temp sensor didn’t work like it should….

You'd think a product typically used in the heat of summer would be better equipped to handle heat. Especially from a reputable company such as Milwaukee
Mine is during it also...after 6 months.
Just bought mine today, its totally JUNK, keeps cutting off...then you need to wait 20 minutes... JUNK...
Reach out to Milwaukee. They will take care of you

Has nothing to do with the battery..

Has nothing to do with the battery, when the trimmer string is to long the motor overheats.
You need a HO battery
Cheap Chinese Fucking Crap! I've literally used mine for 10 minutes and the powerhead died. I guess I'll just stick with my Crapsman pole saw! At least it still works!
