I was so excited about Podz back in the day. I watched that Hlinka/Gretzky where he exploded and he wasn't just scoring goals, he was scoring Pavel Bure style 1-on-3 goals! I also watched him struggle in later tournaments but did notice his effort and physicality would always help a team in other ways. I maintain to this day that he can still be a useful NHL player, but it's a shame that the next level offense he showed that one week was an outlier. I hope he finds his game in Edmonton.
While the results were not there, he was doing the little things right and seemingly coachable. He does line changes properly (instead of just lingering around), he finishes his checks, he try to drive to net, battles along the boards, skating hard to backcheck, etc... stuff you like to see out of a young player. For those saying he has been a bust because he's already 23... he has only been in North America for 3 years. Parts of 3 seasons in the NHL with 3 different NHL coaches, at the AHL with 2 different coaches. Developing players require consistency and Vasili has had 5 different coaches in 3 years, hardly consistent. One of the biggest reason he's out is that he's from the previous regime. There's "lame duck" GM and coaches... there's also "lame duck" prospects. If you're not draft from the current regime, you will have a shorter leash to impress, or else you're out. Best of luck to Podz in his career... just hopefully not at the expense of the Canucks.
The Oilers should be able to keep Holloway and Broberg if they can trade Ceci and Kulak, and if Kane goes on LTIR. Podkolzin should be able to find his mojo with the Oil. He's only 23 I believe...
