I was fortunate enough to be living in Japan in 1985, when 'Ran' was released. We saw it in a beautiful theater in Shibuya with incredible sound and this scene was the one my friends and I kept referring to again and again. An epic battle scene entirely expressed through visuals and music until the crucial moment when the music cue ends.... Incredible.
David Raksin, who wrote the immortal score for Laura, called Ran the greatest of all film scores. I certainly agree. When I first saw the battle sequence with this music, I sat there in absolute disbelief at its power and its terrible beauty. The point where the music stops and the sounds of the battle erupt is just as powerful.
I first learned how incomparable a composer Takemitsu was from his contribution to this scene, "Hell's Picture Scroll." How can I describe the effect it had on me the first time I saw it? - except that it carved a permanent wound into my heart. Eternally powerful art.
This is an understatement even.. I have thought about this movie for years ever since I saw it. This scene and this music piece are so powerful, cuts right to the innards of your very soul.
The part at 2:03 always gets to me; that's when Hidetora walks in on his concubines committing mutual suicide. Then the other in the corner weeps with the knife in her hand and he leaves...Lord, it's heartbreaking.
There are no words for me to describe the intense emotion that this scene causes on me. One of the most powerful, overwhelming pictures I ever have seen. Specially the moment when Hidetora's sword is broken, as destiny's bitter joke, denying Hidetora a death he believed to deserve... Thank you Mr. Kurosawa.
Just saw the 4k restoration of this film at the Brooklyn Acad of Music yesterday. This scene still gave the chills! The audience were great, silent thru almost the entire film but when this scene came up were all transfixed!
The scene where his mistress's kill themselves always makes me cry a little. The whole battle, or massacre scene really, is one of my favorite sequences in a film ever. This film is really important. It's important because it's one of the last times you'll ever get to see the work of full blown genius working with total creative control. You just can't find a film this large with that kind of scope that will allow it's director that kind of freedom anymore.
And let's not forget the masterful acting by Tatsuya Nakadai. His portrayal was so great it made me cry by the end, only three movies have had that effect on me. And no, it doesn't leave your head alone.
I can't stop listening to this. I saw the movie only twice on Blu-Ray. And I understand the theme behind this piece from its OST as well as the spell-bounding scene is supposed to reveal to us the inevitable reality of bloodshed that mankind has been setting itself up for thousands of years. But there's something else about this music that makes me look back and reminisce on all the time I've wasted in the past engaging myself in frivolous tasks that could've been spent in more productive pursuits.
Bleak, shocking, impactful, and totally symbolic of the battle scenes and death it runs alongside in Kurosawa's masterpiece. I'd say not paralleled in western cinema.👏🏾🎼👌🏾❤
In my honest opinion as composer this is one of the strongest scores i have ever heared. I really dont know any other track that is THAT dark and baleful. Just awesome!
mmm . . . This music reminds me all those horrible pictures from Ran. This is one of most important films in my whole short life ! Thank you so much for posting this masterpice.
They really did make the battle scene horrifying in the face paint that made the actors not just look really dead but horrifying. The score makes the scene so much more haunting.
awesome score and Haunting, i just saw it for the first time on dvd Criterion Edition------this film is wayyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyy better than this year SpiderMan film. Kurosawa Forever
Eerrie...Haunting...Beautiful...Moving...Gripping...so many words that describe this piece. Thank you for posting. I just wish I can find the soundtrack to this favorite film of mine.
@2007friends I read somewhere that Kurosawa asked Toru Takemitsu to compose something like Mahler's piece. And it is obious that he was inspired by "Das lied von der erde".
This video come up on my suggestion While USA says Biden is President, this is weird but it may tell something is wrong on USA today. The music is very emotional, very good.
Nah, this film is from 1985 so I highly doubt that it influenced John Williams in the first few Star Wars movies. But there’s no denying that Kurosawa’s work has hugely influenced Star Wars.
Best music to play while betraying your father and invading his castle
🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
Ichimonji moment.

When the whole world around you is crumbling and you sit there helplessly.
Sounds like you’re given up
This scene in the film is just devastating, overwhelmingly powerful. The ugly chaos of mankind, ever spinning out of our control.
I know, I was so disappointed, thought surely someone would have uploaded it at some point.

i get goosebumps just by thinking about the scene when this music is played
Me too bro
Best movie ever
Damn good
When you pair this haunting soundtrack with Kurosawa's legendary cinematography, you can't help but be mesmerized.

Thats one hell of a Soundtrack.

The part where the music stops and a single gunshot shatters the silence made me jump in the air I was so startled, it’s beautiful.
Questa è un opera d'arte. Grande Toru Takemitsu.
3:56 That drum always throw shivers down my spine.
Takemitsu is a true musical and cinematic genius.
That's a gong. Agreed about Takemitsu. Live long & prosper.
What about 2:23?
Takemitsu can definitely make some eerie reflective tracks...I love his orchestrations.
Not enough dark Romantic music in the world. This is such a beautiful example. Thanks for posting!

Bravo Dom! Profound Spiritual and Very Beautiful! Admiration from a new subscriber. Heartfelt 🎉🎉🎉❤❤❤thanks for sharing!
C'est d'une beauté qui dépasse tout. Le monde est littéralement terrifiant.
I begrudgingly say that this is the best film ever made
If 2020 had a film score

Not sure what "Baleful" means, but I know "Heared" isn't a word.

Ran is a masterpiece, but somehow Kagemusha has edged forward to become my favourite of the two - perhaps i have seen ran too often

Agreed. I never thought I'd find a beheading so visually stunning. ;)
Toru Takemitsu is a genius.
Definitivo, assoluto, terrificante
i'm getting obsessed with this music .. it's just above description .. and it's never great until you listen to it with the scene

This soundtrack is basically horror without ghosts or monsters

Akira Kurosawa is amazing director.

Beautiful tragic music for Kurosawa's greatest epic.
...grande musica. evoca immagini epiche.
That's true. On the Criterion Collection's additional content, it's mentioned quite a few times.
THANK YOU!!!!!!
Magnificent!
This and Throne Of Blood are very dark.
All tales of human greed or excess with a splash of contempt are dark. That's how we humans do.

I'm torn between this score and Alan Silvestri's score for "BACK TO THE FUTURE" as my fave film scores of '85.
Could be a soundtrack from Kotor 2
I wonder what this would sound like played on a pipe organ

Am I imagining things, or are there traces of the first movement of Mahler's 10th symphony in there as well?
Traces? More like direct quotes from Der Abschied

This is basically Star Wars lol. Lucas totally ripped this too..
Nah, this film is from 1985 so I highly doubt that it influenced John Williams in the first few Star Wars movies. But there’s no denying that Kurosawa’s work has hugely influenced Star Wars.
The Hidden Fortress was apparently the big influence for Star Wars
Star Wars: 1977
Ran: 1985.
How can it be basically Star Wars????
I mean Star Wars did have inspiration from samurai films but this isn’t a example. Ran came out after Star Wars.
