Album: Fear Of A Blank Planet
Genre: Progressive Rock
Year: 2007
Lyrics:
Sunlight coming through the haze
No gaps in the blinds
To let it inside
The bed is unmade,
Some music still plays
TV, yeah it's always on
The flicker on the screen
A movie actress screams
I'm basking the shit flowing out of it
I'm stoned in the mall again
Terminally bored
Shuffling round the stores
And shoplifting is getting so last year's thing
X-Box is a god to me
A finger on the switch
My mother is a bitch
My father gave up ever trying to talk to me
Don't try engaging me
The vaguest of shrugs
The prescription drugs
You'll never find a person inside
My face is Mogadon
Curiosity has given up on me
I'm tuning out desires
The pills are on the rise
How can I be sure I'm here?
The pills that I've been taking confuse me
I need to know that someone sees that
There's nothing left, I simply am not here
I'm through with pornography
The acting is lame
The action is tame
Explicitly dull
Arousal annulled
Your mouth should be boarded up
Talking all day with nothing to say
Your shallow proclamations
All misinformation
My friend says he wants to die
He's in a band, they sound like Pearl Jam
Their clothes are all black
The music is crap
In school I don't concentrate
And sex is kinda fun, but just another one
Of all the empty ways of using up the day
How can I be sure I'm here?
The pills that I've been taking confuse me
I need to know that someone sees that
There's nothing left, I simply am not here
Bipolar disorder
Can't deal with this boredom
Bipolar disorder
Can't deal with this boredom
You don't try to be liked
You don't mind
You feel no sun
You steal a gun
To kill time
You're somewhere
You're nowhere
You don't care
You catch the breeze
You still the leaves
So now where?
How did a 40 year-old man write a song that so succinctly captured my experience being a teenager in the 2000's, while it was happening no less?
But it's made by millionaires who are nearly twice your age ;)
@@RushFan-2112 A Rush fan and a Porcupine Tree fan. Kudos
@@recipexlol3309 Hell yeah.

Because he was a teenager once....and remembered it. ;)
So glad to see this in Control
“Maybe I’ll never understand. Maybe I don’t need to.”

yeah nice to see PT recieve a bit of mainstream recogition!!
There's also that indie game which is basically "Drive Home: The Game". At least in aesthetic.
@@TranscenGopher yeah, i know. The soundtrack was made by Steven Wilson.
This song was a decade ahead of its time lyrically.
Lyrically and literally.
Well that mention of malls is sort of dated, and TV is mostly replaced with streaming & binge watching, but well written song just the same.
Could have been written in 1995. Just take out the X-Box line. Kids have been like this for a long time.
No, its old issues getting worse as we become more materialistic and detached from real world experiences. Social media is just taking children's overactive imagination and absorbing it to the 11th degree so the have less imagination.
2006 problems were just starting to see the writing on the wall. Now the teens who grew up in this generation are adults...and guess what? We are more medicated than ever before. Obsessed with pop culture more than ever before. Over 20% of millennials are in therapy...which is an extraordinary statistic in of itself.
We are an overmedicated society that's only getting worse, and those poor habits are becoming celebrated as a society...and the social media tools and smartphones becoming even more aggressive and absorbing every ounce of attention.
@@isletoflangerhans8281 They weren't that worse in 1995, but I get your point.
Take Control, “Maybe I’ll never understand. Maybe I don’t need to.”
*You are a worm through time. The thunder song distorts you. Happiness comes. White pearls, but yellow, and red in the eye.*

Through a mirror, inverted is made right. Leave your insides by the door. After the song, time for applause.
5:01 Probably my favorite drum fill of all times!
then followed by one of the best riffs ever! pure gold
My uncle, my idol and the one who showed me this band died but he left me the hoody from this album. Love and miss him, glad he showed me so much.
Sorry for your loss. It's special when you have someone like that My Dad & I occasionally listen to his vinyl collection of classic rock bands (Led Zeppelin Lynyrd Skynyrd)

This record is a MASTERPIECE. It fits in the same category as Dark Side of the Moon and The Wall. It is absolutely EPIC and should go down in the various music halls of fames as unprecedented. LOVE.
Too bad Steven Wilson dislikes being compared to Pink Floyd.

Hearing this at the end of Control was the cherry on top of a fantastic game
Everyone liking the drums, but I also have to admire the bass in the composition
based
Remember this coming out in high school, discovering weed and girlfriends, night drives back from her house, skinny jeans and band practice, long texts and Myspace quizzes, getting lost in Porcupine Tree. Every argument felt so important, every kiss so supremely divine, every day filled with rollercoasters of angst and joy. It was so..... perfect. ❤️❤️❤️
God damn. Why did everything have to change?
Gavin Harrison on the drums is something else..... Damn.
Perfectly coins the emptiness of modern synthetic life. Brilliant thanks steven wilson
"Your mouth should be boarded up" that's such a great lyric
C Steegs talkin all day, nothin to say !! Classic, I am 73.5 years old & fucking love Porcupine Tree/ Steven W !!🙃
I think at the very beginning of the song he’s typing “ fear of a blank planet”
YOU ARE RIGHT, HOLY SHIT
How do you even notice this?
@@toprak3479 Some dude on reddit was able to figure it out by the number key presses as well as how long it took for certain keys to be pressed plus the distinctive sound of the space bar.

Gavin Harrison is simply incredible, how can one drummer play with such technicality, fluidity and feel in so many different genres...
Xiyu Yang The Pineapple Thief
69th like lol
Doesn't feel like 7+ mins! Never get tired of this
"There's no such thing as a perfect song", they say. And Steven Wilson goes and makes a metric fuckton of them, including this one.
I just love progressive rock
As soon as I read National Anthem, that bassline came into my head! Love Radiohead

popurrí Chichos
Me too. Emerson Lake & Palmer was my gateway to prog. Good times.
I just love how daring and adventurous the genre is. For the most part it's about standing out and being different (although there have been some cliches that took off)
@@JackTheripper911 tool and dream theater are awesome
One of the greatest albums ever recorded. The whole album is stunning. I was lucky enough to see Porcupine tree live on this tour in Manchester in 2007 . Amazing band. Steven Wilson is a musical genius! The riff at 5.05 is the riff of the century! Wow !
Lyrics seem more socially relevant nowadays then when this was released
BT Studio Productions ages like a fine wine
BT Studio Productions that's because Steven Wilson doesn't live in the present. Time isn't relevant in his reality.
I know because it is the same for me.
Kysrath lul edgelord
The best music often becomes more relevant with time, and it's rarely a good thing :(
Yada yada yada
First time I heard that fill close the the 5 minute mark, my jaw dropped. To this day, it is one of my favorite drum fills. Gavin Harrison is a machine.
Know this comments a year old but he is going on Tour with his band the pineapple thief this summer . I’m getting my tickets to see this legend front and center. Hope you can too!
The intro makes me want to stay a while and listen.
Incredible song, incredible album.
Something has to change
Undeniable dilemma
Boredom's not a burden
Anyone should bear
Constant over stimulation numbs me
But I would not want it any other way
It's not enough
I need more
Nothing seems to satisfy
I said
I don't want it
I just need it
To breathe, to feel, to know I'm alive
You should be a song writer! Oh, wait...
Boyd Peterson I do wish my words could be as prophetic as Maynard's, but I am not as driven.
Tool - Sober, all those Bands like PT or Tool, they're so right about what happens to the human's behaviour and thinking
Stinkfist!
Another great song
So incredibly happy PT have re-formed and are touring again! I had given up all hope of ever seeing them again after Download 12 years ago, but yesterday I went to their concert again and it's like no time had passed at all. My favourite band ❤️
i remember when this came out... I was 14 years old. amazing times... time flies.
yes my friend time flies
I have no idea what I'm getting myself into. Wish me luck for this trip.
How did it go?
Great song, but that outro is icing on the cake. simply an eerie and beautiful collection of congenial visions. dreamlike in nature, but far from any daydream. instrumentally mesmerizing, perceptually breathtaking. like you're transported into the open-ended concluding scenes of your own movie. striking storytelling from the lyrics.
5:03 OMG THAT RIFF!!!
Sleeper that riff is badass
0:00 - 7:39 OMG THOSE RIFFS!!!
Fixed it for you.
And the drum fill leading into it !!
And not only that riff but also the fill before it...
Francisco d'Anconia this album is so good even the typing is a good riff
Control sent me.

< The Board has sent/manipulated you >
The snaresound is probably the best sound among all sounds ever.
Lars doesn't use a trash can sounding snare on st anger you dummie, he uses a trash can
Reality Programmer HAHAA
@Enceladus I'm afraid he doesn't really know what a drums is... The drummer of Metallica has no groove at all. One of the worst drummer I've heard. But really a very good business man. One of the best in music.
September 23rd 2022, Irving Texas, whadda performance!! Lucky to be, at the right place, at the right time!

This song perfectly captured how it felt to be in quarantine. (For me at least)
The rythmic section of this is just pure freaking gold. It just all fits so well

I have bipolar disorder and I feel very identified with the boredom part and that everything is just a killing time activity because nothing really matters.
I have refused mood stabilizers and neuroleptics. The worst day of my depressive phase is preferable to the insaturable boredom of the pills.
