  • In this video I show how to darken and lighten the primary colors for shadows and highlights. You can see my palette the whole video to learn how I ix color. As a beginner oil painter knowing how to use these three colors is very important. This demonstration is done on a oil primed canvas panel and a pad of palette paper using Winsor and Newton oil paints.

Hi, I am the son of two artists and began painting in my hometown of Richmond, Virginia before I could walk. I was a rare combination of artist and athlete so I moved to Los Angeles in 2008 to play football for USC. I left the team my sophomore year to focus on painting and filmmaking, applying the same focus and discipline from my football career to my art. I primarily work in oils, and spend most free days painting "en plein air" in my new home of Sarasota Florida.

This is what I have been looking for. As a newbie to painting, I was adding black to darken things...and it was just not working. I did not know why until I saw this video. I need more bare bones basics like this. Thanks for the vids!

Fully agree! I wish they taught this in high school, I would have been a much better artist by now. This is essential
Honestly most of paint coach videos are like this. Amazing information that no one ever talks about but that’s honestly so simple!
Paint coach id like to thank you for being such a great teacher:)

This is SO HELPFUL!!!!! I’m planning on binging every video I can from you for the basics!!!!
I used to really be into art but I always thought I never needed the basics and after only watching 3 of your videos so far I’ve learned more than I’ve ever learned before!
Plus you’ve made me feel a lot less scared to oil paint. I’ve tried watercolor, and acrylic and they always felt stressful and overwhelmed me. So far with just my first day of grabbing the basic supplies I can already say with confidence that I like it soooo much better.
Oil paint is just so satisfying to just work with on its own.
You changed my whole mindset with just a simple sentence! “Don’t fall in love with the end product, fall in love with the process”
So thank you so much! :)
The only thing I can suggest is maybe making a playlist for the very basics just so it’s a bit easier to maneuver to your playlist and have everything in one place! :)

this helps me a lot with managing my pallet. i used to end up with huge piles of paint and 'lose' my original color, and taint the other colors and have to stop and clean the pallet, waste paint, and work my way back. No longer thanks to you. Great stuff!!!

Just implemented this in my paintings and they all became better. This is fundamental and I didn’t see such a clear explanation like this on another channel. Thank you once again Chris.

Can somebody explain when he says push-pull lights and darks? Does he literally mean the strokes for each are intentionally different or is it just some kind of expression (if it is please explain that too😅). Thanks in advance

I think the shadow area on the yellow disc should lean towards blue, this brownish shadow looks a bit muddy.
