MLK Was right. Story is told that Dr. May Jamison joined NASA because of Uhura. PS I was 15 when Star Trek premiered and I first saw Uhura. There were other women on the ship but they seemed more or less waitresses to me. They never did anything important to the running of the ship. Uhura was on the bridge with the big boys. She even helped drive the ship sometimes. I was so mesmerized by how professional and brave Uhura was. I never saw a woman as an officer on a ship before. I wanted to be her!! She was really a very important hero to girls who watched the show.
While I strongly agree with you, watching episodes with Ms Nichols you soon realize how limited her dialogue was. I think that there are at least 3 episodes when she speaks and all she says is something like: Captain, I am so frightened. It makes you wonder why the writers were so unimaginative with this one character. The story about her encounters with studio security are disgusting. I now realize that Ms Nichols had it really tough, tougher than other cast members. I am glad she stayed with the show and movies, and I am glad the movie writers gave her better dialogue.
I had read in a book Shatner recalling his experience about that tiger. As I recall he was intimidated by the animal when he saw it eating raw meat fed to it by its trainer on the set.
I am very surprised Teri Garr hated her role on Star Trek, because that was her breakthrough role. I even found a quote from her about it: "I finally started to get real acting work."
Some other stars started on science fiction shows and seldom mentioned it Sandra Bullock played The Bionic Girl on a Six Million Dollar Man and Bionic Woman TV movie, and Debra Winger played Wonder Girl in at least two episodes of Wonder Woman.

William Shatner, Leonard Nimoy and Grace Lee Whitney had all been on the Outer Limits before Star Trek. William Shatner was even in an episode called Project Vulcan. Leonard Nimoy was in an episode about an android before any appeared on Star Trek. Many of the ideas on Lost in space and Star Trek were also in movies such as The Forbidden Planet with a type of thought machine and a robot also flying saucer faster than light and it also had a tiger attack. Something resembling the suspended animation machine on Lost in Space and the Transporter on Star Trek. Lost in space had flying saucer and Star Trek a saucer section which was front of ship.
Well describe how someone looks Star Trek was always a show for family. Parents and children should watch it together. There should have been limits instead they kept pushing the envelope other shows pushed the envelope. Then more.. now you have jacked up TV shows the show everything but the in and out of sex up close. Homosexuals on most of the shows even though they only make up about 1% of the population. 3.8% if you count the entire lgbtq community. Ms. Garr can go pound sand lol. As a kid when it originally aired, their portrayal of women was the first time I remember seeing women portrayed as something other than a mom, secretary or teacher. They were scientists, doctors and communication officers. It left the impression on me that if a girl was smart and worked hard, she didn't have to play the role society gave her, she could do what she wanted.

What has Teri Garr done in the years after that episode, then “Young Frankenstein”, then “Mr. Mom”? Nothing of absolute value unless you count a brief role in “Unaccompanied Minors” as being of absolute value. So those that she insults and shun are the ones who end up being remembered.

I've meet Shatner several times over 36 years. He is a pompous jerk but he does get the ladies. Even today! He did, however, give my oldest son his 1st 1st place prize in a costume contest. My son was 6 months old at the time. Which was really cool. Everyone else in that cast were really sweet and didn't take themselves to seriously. They were fun to be around.

someone actually crunched the numbers and 10% of the red shirts died through out the series which is less than the amount of officers that died at 23% so statistically speaking if you were a red shirt you had a good chance of survival.
Oh, the irony of Murglew playing motherly figure.... anyway, I have utmost respect for writing AND acting of Jeri Ryan on Voyager. One of the producers talked about 'Borg Babe', Murglew herself talked that she knew that ratings will skyrocket.... and though evidently they had overplayed Ryan's attractiveness it was one of best characters in whole Star Trek, especially her dynamics with Robert Picardo / The Good Doctor. I'm very greatful for her for keeping up with all inconveniences and staying until the end.

I am surprised to hear Ms Garr does not like Star Trek, for many of her fans I would believe that appearance is where they got their interest in her career from. This was a year before black actress Nichelle Nichols kissed white actor Bill Shatner in the ep "Plato's Stepchildren".
I met Nimoy once in DC, he was in town for the Kennedy Center honors or something a few years ago....He was on the corner of 21 and P street, looking a bit sad as nobody was paying any attention to him....as its 99 percent millennials in the area and they did not know who he was, he was just an old man on the street to them...So I flashed him the live long and prosper sign with my hand and said hello. Then he smiled and seemed to cheer up. Saw the same thing with Ted Danson a few years ago with Mary....he was siting at the fountain in Dupont Circle.....nobody cared or paid attention to him.....he looked like a lost puppy that needed and wanted some attention...but he was invisible. Paula Abdul was in the area once and petted my chihuahua pooch in a coffee shop and she was very sweet, looked just like she does on TV too. We chatted about chihuahuas (she has three of them) and she let me take a picture of her with mine.
Another cast anecdote: the creation of the chief engineer, Scotty, played by James Doohan, and having him use a fake Scottish accent was a subtle reference to the British Merchant Navy, where the chief engineer on most British ships was likely to be a Scotsman, due to the Scottish peoples natural ability with machinery. This is actually true.

Fascinating facts. I do have tinnitus but it was from an infection from my sinus cavity that had to be operated on to remove bony growths. It affected my Eustachian tubing. I adore both William Shatner and the late legendary Leonard Nimoy.....

Re: Teri Garr. Good chance Roddenberry or Shat or both tried to hook up with her, with 60s era aggressiveness. And the Justman thing was a joke. He further wrote that he hide a razor blade in his supplies and found green blood after the "thief" was wounded whilst pilfering the supplies.
I didn't know Teri Garr had a negative attitude about her role on Star Trek, despite it giving her big break. I was also wondering if her very negative attitude was over sexual harassment or something like that. She seems reluctant to give any details.

@@GentlemanAmerican "Sexual harassment" didn't exist as a concept in the 60s, however, if she found whatever happened, IF anything happened, distasteful or worse than distasteful, it would explain why she has a negative attitude about her experience. On the other hand, she might have just found sci-fi or Star Trek, specifically, unpleasant. Sci wasn't especially big in the '60s like now.

I have no doubt Shatner was (and still is) a primadonna on the original Star Trek TV series and anything else he does, but I can't help but wonder why no one talks about George Takei's attitude. The man acts as though the show should have been about himself. He was fished often that Shatner was the focus of everything. Logically, Shatner and Nimoy were the primary stars - so yeah, these two would have most of the focus. James Doohan, DeForest Kelly, and Nichelle Nichols were the 2nd tier stars. George Takei and Walter Koenig were 3rd. But hey, that's my opinion and the way I see things. Long Live Star Trek, the original series! ONE Major Gripe I have is Shatner never entertained the idea of guest-starring or even doing a cameo on Star Trek Continues here on RUclips. Limiting the definition to Caucasian-African, Caucasian-East Asian, and African-East Asian (which is what I am suggesting) still leaves many pre-Star Trek examples.

The way it's told here is different than how I've heard and read the story before. Of course, I've heard and read Shatner's telling, and Nichols' telling, and those differ a bit.
On the Mind Meld talk between William and Leonard Will's said 'Oh we got got told off didn't we ( about bickering about silly things) then he went on to say 'Only rightly we deserved it' it was after that that they both got it and started to work as a team and became firm friends.
The Shatner demanding to kiss Uhura story is often repeated but that's not the way Nichols told it. Originally, Uhura would be kissing Kirk all along, but that caused a fuss. That Nimoy would be her "kisser" had been suggested by the nervous "suits,", and she mockingly said that it probably would have seemed more acceptable to have an alien kiss a black woman than a white earthman. Shatner probably argued it back to him. One should point out that he was not only the star of the show (see the credits) but did have say in scripts and what went on in the set. That was his contract. He wasn't "playing the star." He was the star. Before posting gossip and stories based on one reading or someone saying what someone else said, one should actually consult the many sources as ST has had lots of people telling "the real story" and only getting the view of someone who usually just showed up for half a day a week on the set. It was important to have that biracial kiss between a white man and a black woman. And as Mr. Shatner reportedly said at the time, "To hell with the south." So Kirk and Uhura kissed, and the nation survived.
Am I the only one here confused by the added in "irrelevent-to-story" clips from other movies (see bird scenes, etc.). These splotched in "irrelevant inserts" seem to distract from content and flow of consciousness. Surely, we all have imaginations that can mentally "get the point" without visual other-movie "add ins" to merely lenghten the video. To me, this compromises the integrity of the blog. My tinnitus is much different from that if Shatner’s. It was brought by an infection that caused my Eustachian tube to malfunction. It was originally from a repeated bout with sinusitis caused by a blockage of both sinuses cavities. That device that worked for Shatner would not work in my case but aggravate it . This form of tinnitus is accompanied by an increase in inner ear pressure and sensitivity to sounds. However it isn’t brought by Méniere’s disease.
The episode with Mariette Hartley is my favorite Star Trek episode, such a classically beautiful woman. I have seen her on several shows and she is always a delight. I wonder if Ms Garr has that feeling about her appearance in the same way Leonard Nimoy and William Shatner did when fans only remembered Star Trek or if she just dislikes SCI-FI?

Now, When I watch episodes of the original series, and there is a fight scene, I like to watch for when it switches from Shatner to Crane, to Shatner ... It's fun. Sometimes, Crain's hair isn't the same color, or the hairstyle isn't the same as Shatner's. Watch the fight scene in Engineering in "Court Martial" (S1 E20). Perhaps, That late in the season, they were running out of money. and could NOT afford the hair bleach/dye necessary.

The feud between Mulgrew and Ryan has been well documented. Mulgrew was the first female captain in the Star Trek universe and played the part accordingly. She was invited to the white house and met Hilary Clinton and other important people. Then comes Miss Vavoom - as she once literally said - and Ryan stole her limelight. The only thing that followed now was a jealous Mulgrew that could drink the blood of Ryan.
Mariah Francois......you should go back and check it out! You'll be shocked to see how much the futuristic technology depicted in the show was a harbinger of things that we utilize on a daily basis now. Almost prophetic in alot of ways.... and this was almost 55 years ago! Not to mention, this was a great , groundbreaking show at the time. Obviously it has longevity, because the franchise is still going strong to this day. You owe it to yourself to at least check it out.

The claim that it was the first interracial kiss on TV has been thoroughly debunked (although it's possible Shatner and Nichols thought they were first at the time). And if you look at other shows from the time, ST wasn't even all that progressive. Think I-Spy, with a lead who was an intelligent black professional who was in every way equal to his white co-star, or any number of shows that featured a strong female lead, like Big Valley.

William Shatner, Leonard Nimoy and Grace Lee Whitney had all been on the Outer Limits before Star Trek. William Shatner was even in an episode called Project Vulcan. Leonard Nimoy was in an episode about an android before any appeared on Star Trek. Many of the ideas on Lost in space and Star Trek were also in movies such as The Forbidden Planet with a type of thought machine and a robot also flying saucer faster than light and it also had a tiger attack. Something resembling the suspended animation machine on Lost in Space and the Transporter on Star Trek. Lost in space had flying saucer and Star Trek a saucer section which was front of ship.
Roddenberry wrote ALOT of TV scripts. He probably reused, or "borrowed" some of those ideas.

Well describe how someone looks Star Trek was always a show for family. Parents and children should watch it together. There should have been limits instead they kept pushing the envelope other shows pushed the envelope. Then more.. now you have jacked up TV shows the show everything but the in and out of sex up close. Homosexuals on most of the shows even though they only make up about 1% of the population. 3.8% if you count the entire lgbtq community. But to listen to Liberal propaganda it's over 70% personally I don't care what a person does I don't think family shows should show sex of any kind. Understand, that even without Star Trek, we would have had "cell phones". Perhaps ST had an influence over what they initially looked like, but we've always tried to miniaturize out technology. Back in my day, the computer took up a whole room.
Ms. Garr can go pound sand lol. As a kid when it originally aired, their portrayal of women was the first time I remember seeing women portrayed as something other than a mom, secretary or teacher. They were scientists, doctors and communication officers. It left the impression on me that if a girl was smart and worked hard, she didn't have to play the role society gave her, she could do what she wanted.
That's what I told the young women in our family whenever they asked, "Do you think I could...?"

What has Teri Garr done in the years after that episode, then “Young Frankenstein”, then “Mr. Mom”? Nothing of absolute value unless you count a brief role in “Unaccompanied Minors” as being of absolute value. So those that she insults and shun are the ones who end up being remembered.

Oh, the irony of Murglew playing motherly figure.... anyway, I have utmost respect for writing AND acting of Jeri Ryan on Voyager. One of the producers talked about 'Borg Babe', Murglew herself talked that she knew that ratings will skyrocket.... and though evidently they had overplayed Ryan's attractiveness it was one of best characters in whole Star Trek, especially her dynamics with Robert Picardo / The Good Doctor. I'm very greatful for her for keeping up with all inconveniences and staying until the end.

I met Nimoy once in DC, he was in town for the Kennedy Center honors or something a few years ago....He was on the corner of 21 and P street, looking a bit sad as nobody was paying any attention to him....as its 99 percent millennials in the area and they did not know who he was, he was just an old man on the street to them...So I flashed him the live long and prosper sign with my hand and said hello. Then he smiled and seemed to cheer up. Saw the same thing with Ted Danson a few years ago with Mary....he was siting at the fountain in Dupont Circle.....nobody cared or paid attention to him.....he looked like a lost puppy that needed and wanted some attention...but he was invisible. Paula Abdul was in the area once and petted my chihuahua pooch in a coffee shop and she was very sweet, looked just like she does on TV too. We chatted about chihuahuas (she has three of them) and she let me take a picture of her with mine.
Another cast anecdote: the creation of the chief engineer, Scotty, played by James Doohan, and having him use a fake Scottish accent was a subtle reference to the British Merchant Navy, where the chief engineer on most British ships was likely to be a Scotsman, due to the Scottish peoples natural ability with machinery. I didn't know Teri Garr had a negative attitude about her role on Star Trek, despite it giving her big break. I was also wondering if her very negative attitude was over sexual harassment or something like that. She seems reluctant to give any details.
@@GentlemanAmerican "Sexual harassment" didn't exist as a concept in the 60s, however, if she found whatever happened, IF anything happened, distasteful or worse than distasteful, it would explain why she has a negative attitude about her experience. On the other hand, she might have just found sci-fi or Star Trek, specifically, unpleasant. Sci wasn't especially big in the '60s like now.

The man acts as though the show should have been about himself. He was fished often that Shatner was the focus of everything. Logically, Shatner and Nimoy were the primary stars - so yeah, these two would have most of the focus. James Doohan, DeForest Kelly, and Nichelle Nichols were the 2nd tier stars. Why do people continue to state that the Kirk-Uhuru kiss was the first TV interracial kiss?? It wasn't. There were MANY previous to that going back to the 1950s,
Lucille Ball and Desi Arnaz were an "interracial" couple. I believe they might have kissed long before Star Treck.

Limiting the definition to Caucasian-African, Caucasian-East Asian, and African-East Asian (which is what I am suggesting) still leaves many pre-Star Trek examples.

The way it's told here is different than how I've heard and read the story before. Of course, I've heard and read Shatner's telling, and Nichols' telling, and those differ a bit.
On the Mind Meld talk between William and Leonard Will's said 'Oh we got got told off didn't we ( about bickering about silly things) then he went on to say 'Only rightly we deserved it' it was after that that they both got it and started to work as a team and became firm friends.

The Shatner demanding to kiss Uhura story is often repeated but that's not the way Nichols told it. Originally, Uhura would be kissing Kirk all along, but that caused a fuss. That Nimoy would be her "kisser" had been suggested by the nervous "suits,", and she mockingly said that it probably would have seemed more acceptable to have an alien kiss a black woman than a white earthman. Shatner probably argued it back to him. One should point out that he was not only the star of the show (see the credits) but did have say in scripts and what went on in the set. That was his contract. He wasn't "playing the star." He was the star. Before posting gossip and stories based on one reading or someone saying what someone else said, one should actually consult the many sources as ST has had lots of people telling "the real story" and only getting the view of someone who usually just showed up for half a day a week on the set. It was important to have that biracial kiss between a white man and a black woman. And as Mr. Shatner reportedly said at the time, "To hell with the south." So Kirk and Uhura kissed, and the nation survived.
After the way Shatner acted, they should have had Kirk kiss Spock.

My tinnitus is much different from that if Shatner’s. It was brought by an infection that caused my Eustachian tube to malfunction. It was originally from a repeated bout with sinusitis caused by a blockage of both sinuses cavities. That device that worked for Shatner would not work in my case but aggravate it . This form of tinnitus is accompanied by an increase in inner ear pressure and sensitivity to sounds. However it isn’t brought by Méniere’s disease.

Now, When I watch episodes of the original series, and there is a fight scene, I like to watch for when it switches from Shatner to Crane, to Shatner ... It's fun. Sometimes, Crain's hair isn't the same color, or the hairstyle isn't the same as Shatner's. Watch the fight scene in Engineering in "Court Martial" (S1 E20). Perhaps, That late in the season, they were running out of money. and could NOT afford the hair bleach/dye necessary.

The feud between Mulgrew and Ryan has been well documented. Mulgrew was the first female captain in the Star Trek universe and played the part accordingly. The only thing that followed now was a jealous Mulgrew that could drink the blood of Ryan.
They had women of high rank on some of the original episodes, just not a part of the regular crew.

The claim that it was the first interracial kiss on TV has been thoroughly debunked (although it's possible Shatner and Nichols thought they were first at the time). And if you look at other shows from the time, ST wasn't even all that progressive. Think I-Spy, with a lead who was an intelligent black professional who was in every way equal to his white co-star, or any number of shows that featured a strong female lead, like Big Valley.

I don't think Uhura was forth in command. I think Spock, Scotty, and Sulu were next in command if Kirk was off the bridge. She might have been above Checkoff, but we'd be in deep shit already if it came down to those two.
In the show, we saw Spock, Scotty and Sulu left with the helm. It wouldn't be until the Animated Series that we get to see Uhura in command.
They later had a real lion on set of Spider-Man and a bear on The Waltons also. Wonder Woman used a guy in gorilla suit and Little house on the prairie a guy in bear suit.
