- Hello Flosstube! We are two sisters who both love to cross stitch. Subscribe to get our videos in your feed every week.
On our channel, we share tutorials (like this one) on Thursdays and our personal stitching on Mondays (Flosstube episodes).
In this short beginner cross stitch tutorial, Stephanie demonstrates how to cut linen on the thread and how to cut evenweave by pulling a thread. This ensures that your cross stitch fabric is cut straight.

I hope Allison feels better soon!
I am really happy that you posted this video! I've been stitching for almost 20 years and know the pain of a "crooked but not really crooked" piece of linen. This is going to help me a lot! ✂
Thank you Stephanie! Can't wait to meet you at Weekend A. ✂✂✂✂✂✂✂✂✂✂✂✂✂
That looks so satisfying! ✂️ we miss Allison, but your doing a great job (on your own) as well 🤍
i'm not a beginner to stitching but i am a beginner to linen and this was incredibly helpful. i don't think it even would have occurred to me otherwise. thank you!! ❤✂
Stitching for years and this was totally brand new information for me. Looking forward to the one on Aida! Thank you!! ✂️
Thanks for teaching this technique to assure squared edges. ✂️✂️✂️
This is so helpful. Thank you! Beautifully demonstrated. Appreciate you ✂️💕🙏✂️💕🙏
Just what I needed today! Tysm for this!! ✂
True story! I watched this when you released it, but kind of tucked the info away for later. I pulled out a piece of linen yesterday and it was cut SO crooked!! It was about two inches off kilter. I … A. Noticed it before I started the project … and B. Used your fabulous instructions to “true” it up!! Crisis averted. Thank you thank you for this video! You saved the day (and days of stitching that would probably have had to be trashed)
Learned something! Thanks ✂️
Good tutorial Easy to understand ✂️
✂️ You could turn that stitching into a bookmark. Or patchwork it into a project bag.
You *can* just cut the linen by eye - without pulling a thread. I sometimes do this with small pieces - using my embroidery spips, rather than getting out the fabric shears. Although I wouldn't want to with higher counts of linen!
Hope Allison is feeling better soon. Even if she's not up to stitching - the freebee Xmas pattern hunt might be fun for her.
So helpful, thank you so much! ✂️
I knew about pulling threads but never considered it for my cross stitch. I kind of feel dumb now. I love these extras because even an experienced stitcher and sometimes seamstress can relearn things.😅 ✂️
Missing Allison! And I want you to know you have done well with the "interruptions" from your little ones😀. Keep smiling because before you know it , it will be too quiet!😑
Great video, so helpful. Thank you!
Very helpful. Thank you
This was super helpful!! Thank you!
I've pulled a thread on large pieces of linen, yet the smaller ones I just cut with a rotary cutter & a quilt ruler. It can be difficult if there is a fabric slub along the way. I make zipper pulls or small pin cushions for those small stitched pieces, and real tiny designs onto scrap linen I make a button out of them for a deco onto the finished piece. Dritz Button kits are sold at places like Joann's or Amazon ... ✂✂
Scraps can make good book marks.

If you don't square it up before stitching, you could end up without enough fabric. So I don't think it is okay to wait until after it's stitched. I would rather know before I started stitching that the piece is too small rather than be many hours into the project before I found out.
