To answer the base model coloured bumpers - This model was only available in white, red and blue at this time - only the white cars had white bumpers (the other two were grey coloured) - I had one and they were colour impregnated plastic and were impossible to keep clean - The minor comments to the side of the spec pages details this. Great video.
Had 96 5. 5 si...... Great car, fun to drive, 150k changed engine, got replacement from focus with on 18k miles and changed ecu for 130 hp Mondeo, had 3 hp size, 105, 115 and 130..... bought the car for 100 pound and only needed fuse box.... Which was 150 pound from ford dealer, next day delivery too
There must have been loads of unsold mk4's available for a while after the mk5's introduction. I remember a friend's parents buying a rather lovely Diamond White XR3i H951NAR brand new in May 1991, nearly a year after the mk5 came out. In fact, the mk5 already had a light facelift in January 1991, which brought more equipment, better seats and the L model. I've never seen any J-plate mk4's except for one van.
I had a 1997 1.8 Ghia saloon in cuirass blue with grey velour interior. Nice, reliable, well specced car with air conditioning and an electric drivers seat, among other goodies. That off white leather interior looks most distinctive, was it even available as an option? It didn't look like it from the brochure you had.
I'm currently on my 8th car. My 6th car was a white 1994 M reg Escort 1.8 L diesel saloon that was first used by Essex Constabulary as a patrol car. I bought it in Spring 2010 for £250.00 and it had 152,000 miles. My expectations were rock bottom when I bought it. However, those expectations were exceeded for the little money I paid for it. Very comfortable driver's seat. Despite it gradually decaying the old beast got me to whatever temp job I was doing at the time and it was dirt cheap to run. Granted, it was slow but it got me from A to B....eventually. The driver's door lock failed and the boot regularly filled with rain water but what can you expect for a 16 year old car? I missed that car. My financial situation improved by late summer and I was able to trade it in for car number 7: a 2003 Nissan Almera diesel with 136 bhp engine. Got my money back on the Escort. I have dedicated a thread to that Escort on the Auto**ite old car forum
I kind of liked the original styling, and the last facelift 1996 onwards was good looking one to me also. This middle facelifted version, well the grille looks to me like it's from different car :D
The Si was a "warm hatch" that resulted to the rocketing insurance costs of the 1990s. It looked really nice. Your TD would have been faster than the n/a diesel I owned! 😅
The 90's Escorts were Ford's downfall as the quality ie rustproofing on vital parts such as suspension arms, axles, chassis etc was poor often flashing up as serious defects or major advisories come MOT time that needed regular urgent attention by Ford service workshops the UK over. Crash safety wasn't the Mk5 Escort's strong point with a poor ** star EURONCAP crash test safety rating and high risk of serious injuries in a frontal impact.
I quite like the Mk5, they were more of an evolution of the mk4 and looked more mature and substantial. The face-lift models after spoiled the looks in my opinion.

Thank you for sharing sometimes a car is more that just the sum of its parts.

I recall reading how the Si was slower than a mk4 xr3i. I had a mk5 td escort 1.8 was very slow
The Si looked sporty………
