Thanks for the brilliant broucher review.) I remember seeing quite a few of these, acty's in the 1980's ) i remember a few of the, off licence's using them) also the local florists: even the mobile video hire man drove, one . They all seemed to be : Y to B )registered example's ) one particular, off licence kept there's, for over 10 years, before replacing it with a red Bedford rascal.
Yes,there's a few articles on the internet, regarding the late F1 champion Graham hill and the fiat 126) basically the embassy hill F1 team he owned and ran were given fiat 126 car's to use, and from what I can gather he undertook promotional work for either fiat or a fiat dealership in 1973/74 / i haven't read all the articles but I believe he may of driven a fiat 126 from Scotland to London to complete a fuel economy test also.
I've had a couple 1.6 and 2 litre no regrets glad ford dragged it out as long as they could 👍
Regarding the late great" F1 double world champion Graham hill) it's possible he may of road tested a 126 for fiat, I'll do some research regarding this, i know he helped promote Ford car's. But it'll be interesting to see if he did take part in road testing a fiat 126) thanks for the brilliant broucher review.
Ah" I love visiting the quarterlite back catalogue. I love all Fiat's from this era, I owned a handful of these 126 Fiat's) in the late 80's & early 90's ) they were all reliable and I used to put £5 ) in the tank and drive around all day and night!! I bought them all dirt cheap!! At the time, 2 of them were sunroof model's and the oldest was a 73/74 / m reg and newest was a 79 Treg) there's a LHD polski fiat 126p near my brother's house, that's now wearing 1977/78 S ) UK registration plates, it had previously been wearing polish registration number plates.
Wonderful
I drove a 1988 2.0i Ghia as a taxi when i was a taxi driver back in 1991 to 1993 and it was an amazing car. A really nice handling car and was well equipped for the time. It had some real get up and go when you hustled it along, it wasn't a slouch, even on backroads, it could keep up with a 2.0 Sierra. It was on the motorways that they were great though, really nice to cruise in. Also a huge boot/trunk area and the estate versions are huge load luggers too.
Aw wonderful I didn’t know you did taxi work
Hi, great video, very informative. It's nice to see you talking about the Capri special editions of the early 80s, as these have now been overshadowed by the 2.8 Injection and 3.0S models. Ford wanted to shift more of the base model Capris, so they launched these special editions to help improve sales, first of which was the GT4. Even the Capri Laser was a special edition but then became a run out model for the 1.6 & 2.0. There's one Capri special edition you've missed called a Tempo. But to be fair, there was never any sales literature on it as it was more of a dealer only special edition, and most were registered as Capri L, etc. I've got an original dealer showroom poster of a Capri Calypso in my vast collection of Capri memorabilia. 😁👍
Wonderful - thank you for sharing your knowledge
The reason these were SL and SLX was there were built at lthe austin factory longbridge and not at cowley You forgot to mention that the front suspension had been inproved using telescopic shock absorbers on all SL abd SLX models the range had been reduced as the new montego had started been built at the morris factory cowley Missed monza red on the colours this was a Longbridge colour Ironic that the marina ital made BL some money compared to its other cars but people forget this it kept a lot of other BL cars afoat so it never got the investment it needed Yes it was an old design but a bread a butter car. The ital was a another stop gap for BL they were struggling to get the montego ready and had no option but to carry it on a bit longer they didn't have any other saloon and estate car range at the time that sold well
Best car Renault ever made would have been a world beater if they could have got today's models rustproofing then
Absolutely wonderful cars
To think, a mere 10 years after this brochure was released, I was buying these Granadas for scrap, often acquiring drivable cars for £40. By the time 2007 arrived, I'd lost count of how many I dismantled, but it would average one per week, if not more. They were just large Sierras, but not as well built, and certainly not as well built as the predecessor Mk2 Granada. Company fleets and cabbies loved them, as did those down at the Golf club. Huge cavernous things with all the toys. It was a huge leap forward for those who had repped or taxied in Cortinas previously. Typically killed off by rust around the rear suspension mounts, followed by gearbox faults, and then water ingress into the electrics. Quite a hardy car. Uninspiring to drive with high pitch and roll. Earlier generations of the Granada were far superior in all but technology and toys.
That is amazing when you think how much the higher specced models sold new for - thank your for sharing your knowledge
Scorpio 4x4 Black
Looking at the interiors, they look modern and fresh even today after all this time. Even the exterior doesn't look that dated. Remember this model was launched nearly 40 years ago. An amazing accomplishment. At 13:39 those trims are definitely plastic and not alloy wheels.
At 17:48 Just to let you know, £17,478 in 1987 is now £49,461 (Nov 2024), according to the "Old Lady of Threadneedle Street's" inflation calculator.
Sounds about right and makes me feel just how much more expensive new car are today than back then.
I do love a large hatchback. However, Ford Australia never sold the Granada/Scorpio. Aussie Ford buyers would have gone for a Falcon, and if they wanted extra luggage space, the Falcon wagon was always available. Of course, Aussies regarded a 2.9 litre V6 as a small engine, though I'm sure it was a more advanced engine than the 2.8 and 3.3 litre straight sixes in the Falcon. From videos I've seen on RUclips, UK buyers, especially in the executive car class, were very conservative and still preferred four door saloons. Go figure.
Loved Granados from the start
I own two GENERAL MARKET Sept 1984 versions of this same brochure with an unmarked SR5 on the cover.
Interesting
Japan sold the matching sedans for these between 1984-1989 (1985-1990 model years)
The 85 Granada was Ford's last big luxury car. We'll give the stupid, ugly pig they replaced it with a miss....goodness knows what Ford were thinking! My boss had a 1987 2.0i Ghia. I got to drive it a bit, he needed me to put miles on the damn thing. Despite the bulky size, the 2.0i seemed reasonably quick. The trim was smart, and the stereo loud. What more could you want? I liked the whole look. A bit similar to the Sierra, but somehow more sophisticated & fresh. The 1.8 model was offered for company car tax at the time. No one would have been seen dead in a 1.8😊. Ultimately, big cars from mid range manufacturers were killed off because buyers wanted a badge with German kudos. A decent car with the wrong badge would never cut the mustard in the company carpark ever again. The Granada was a decent car worthy of footnote in automotive history. Yes, Ford loved to rattle on about ABS. It sounded great. Oddly, after 35 years of driving with anti-lock, I don't think I've ever had it kick in during a brisk stop. I drive like an old sod, that's probably why.
Icy conditions is the only time I ever thanked ABS tbh.
My friend's dad had the 4×4. Black leather interior. So squishy and a lovely smell inside. Then again, that might have been because he also smoked a pipe.....
There's something interesting about the base model of a big executive car. The L looks pretty smart and modern and the dash looks good without the wood trim. I think the later trend for dark wood and silver would have suited that dash.
I would have been tempted by the L
Just wheel trims as standard on the 2 wheel drive Ghias! The Ghia 4x4 with air conditioning would suit me. In red if possible. The 2.4 V6 engine options didn't sell well if I recall correctly and was eventually dropped.
Yes the extra cost must have put most off the 2.4
A Ford Granada Ghia with legs, good car. Not quite Land Rover territory, but just enough traction to keep going, when others are slipping and sliding in their rear wheel drive and front wheel drive cars.
Loved the MK3’s, so comfortable and relaxing, the V6 versions were great on the road
Back in the day, a special edition was anything but special. In essence, a basic model with some daft stripes. A budget model trying to pretend it was something a bit different. Everyone knew they were to be avoided like the plague. Come the time to sell, you couldn't give these dogs away. The Calypso wasn't that bad. Ford were kings of the special edition, they clawed every penny out of every model, no opportunity missed.😅
Lovely looking cars. I'd go for a yellow one as well. I also liked the 1985-1990 model Celica with the pop up headlamps.
I found a GT4 in signal red last year, I've only ever seen 1 other forsale and only heard of 3 others that were around years ago. the colour against the burgundy stripes is stunning, it's the only Capri to be done in signal red, however...there was a local guy who ordered a 3.0s in signal red, he had it 3 months and wrote it off by smashing it in a milk float. It cost him quite a bit extra. It's a stunning colour
It reminded me of, a little Dodge challenger rear . Very good looking .My 626 coupe , from 79 , also had 5 speed
It reminded me of, a little Dodge challenger rear . Very good looking .
I do like the look of these. They are nicely styled cars. I like that dashboard, too, as it looks really nice and reminds me a bit of a Ford from this period.
I really love the design of these
Nice looking car for it's time, interesting to see the price list with complete Toyota lineup at the time.
Next door neighbour had a brand new N reg yellow one just like the brochure in August 74....SOOOOO jealous..
Aw wonderful
Malipayong Pasko, Stephen! Happy Christmas from me watching on Christmas Day in Cagayan de Oro City Mindanao Philippines. The early Celicas were beautifully styled. I have to admit that my favourite Celica was the liftback that almost looked like a mini Mustang. Some of the Celica liftbacks in the early eighties also were very interesting. Keep safe and warm there in Manitoba Canada.
Thank you Merry Christmas
Really like the US muscle car-inspired look of these, some attractive designs on offer from Toyota around this time. Turning to the price list, a base model VW Beetle (1200?) came in at £995 on the road at this time. I can remember the adverts. So exactly the same price as a basic Toyota 1000. By no means cheap but fair value considering what you were getting, which is pretty much where Toyota has always been. Nothing wrong with that at all.
Merry Christmas, have relaxing period into New Year there's plenty vids i have miss.
Merry Christmas
Later in the 70s, this model Celica won in class at the Bathurst 1000 driven by Peter Williamson. Fitted with the world's first in-car camera in 1979, so lots of footage of the Celica.
Remember these love the styling. I owned a 1600ST with a 5 speed loved the pillar less doors and the little wind down window in the rear great looking car at all angles. I always aspire to get a 2000GT. Mine succumbed to the rust worm and was beyond repair but today there value is going up❤
My late Uncle had one of these new in yellow - a GT I think. It was a very nice car indeed. When you think about what else was on the road in 1974 wow it was a super stylish machine. Thanks for showing the brochure. Have a merry Christmas.
Merry Christmas
Merry Christmas! A friend of mine had one of these as a hand-me-down from her father. She drove it like a scalded cat, and she was utterly beautiful.
Merry Christmas
This is a good one for Christmas Eve. Great looking car.
Merry Christmas my friend. Back then, in my primary school days, the Celica was quite a common sight on Australian roads..
Merry Christmas
Thanks, for this brilliant broucher review. ) I've always really" liked the Fiat mirafiori. it's always been my favourite Fiat. ) I really like the look of the supermirafiori 2:0 TC. ) However the more basic 1:4 model really looks good. But My all time favourite" mirafiori would have to be the early series 1. 1300 model ) simplistic & uncluttered. Especially in 2 door form.
Certainly something about them
Miss my red ranger .. got me and the boys to Amsterdam early 90's. Happy times. Other than an early TT it's been estates all the way.
Can’t beat a good estate
The CX was my favourite car when I was a kid. It was so beautiful !
Mine too
BLACK MAGIC. Always loved this car! Back in the day I had a brochure of this - although I was only 13 at the time.
Wow was this car’s styling ever copied. Real game changer.
Love capris , they were the days
Of course we didn't get these Capris in Australia, but I reckon that the Cabaret II looked like great value.
Ford really were marketing experts with the Capri and other special editions in the late 70s and 80s. All these Capri's look great. I remember all these editions from my youth. Very informative video for the Capri fan.
Thank you
Head restraints were mandatory for all Australian cars from 1972 onwards.
Yea the UK was a long way behind
I don't think that I have ever seen one with alloys. Would they have just been the laser alloys ?
I thought the same must have been a rare option - I would imagine the laser alloys - but if anyone knows for sure please do comment…..
