  • Part Six ! - The Rover range for 1977 includes Range Rover.
    So far we have looked at the fabulous Minis, Maxi, Princess. Austin Allegro and Vanden Plas 1500. The Morris Marina and the MG range.

    Great video 🎉 It's a few years later but I saw a 1982 rover SD1 2000 auto in beige complete with it's beige interior and those lovely blank spots on the dashboard. At the weekend with it's lovely basic spec wheel's! Poverty spec heaven . For us poverty spec lover's lol.

    I remember sitting in a Rover 3500 at the Los Angeles Auto Show in 1980…. The only year it was sold here.

    Like the Stag, the Triumph 2000, and 2500TC and 2500S, and Rover 2200 also would have only just finished production at this time, with lots of unsold ones hanging around, as I used to see lots of late S-reg P6's and Triumph 2000s driving around years ago.

    Nice video as always. This was a nice episode of the BL brochure. I did like the 2600 Rover SD1 as my friend had one and i honestly liked them more than the 3500. Its a shame the SD1 had such a bad start with its build quality but it did carry on to become a nice car by the early 80s. I do like the early ones like these though. The Range Rover was always a nice car around this time. A more upmarket farmers vehicle than the Land Rover. Like i said last week its a shame they didnt make a Triumph version of the SD1 as they could have had the luxury version as a Rover but a sporty one as a Triumph as by this time Truimph didnt have a large car.

    Always been a fan of Rover, The 3 door Ranger Rover and the SD1. By 1979 all 4 speed gear boxes ended and all fitted with 5 speed as standard on the SD1 . The face lifted models from 1982 the SD1, 2000 came out known as the Rover 2000 this was there new car to be fitted with a OHC 4 cylinder engine and a 5 speed gear box as standard, I remember having a ride in a SD1 2000 in the mid 1980's it was a nice car, it had a 100 bhp engine but I've also been in 2300 and a 3500 Vanden Plass and 3500 Vittess, the Vittess was some car fast and powerful this was a 1982/83 car Y reg in black.     What a fantastic forward looking era for Rover. I agree with you they lost the plot later with the retro wood and leather nonsense of the Rover 75. Loved the SD1 the best car Rover ever produced in my opinion. My parents used to have a white 2600 with chocolate brown seats, a gorgeous and spacious luxury car. The SD1 could have saved the company if only they'd got the build quality right at the start of production. Another story of if only... Great catalogue. Thank you.

    It could be either an American Ford Custom 500 or Galaxie 500 next to the police Range Rover.

    nice too see this Leyland cars brochure pt 6,rover sd 1,this the luxury model that time, this model used by uk police department, in. uk now is this model still on the uk road now

    My dad always bought his cars secondhand. However, when the big Rover hatchbacks came within budget I don't think he was keen on them. Likely down to the reputation of the early models.
    Those original Rovers do look fantastic though.

    There was a 2.4 diesel none turbo and a 2.0 petrol powered SD1 but they were woefully underpowered for car size

      Wrong ! the 2.4 vm was turbo diesel

    The South African Rovers were marketed a little differently than elsewhere. They did not use nomenclature based on engine capacity. There were two six-cylinder models, the "Rover SD" and "Rover SDX", powered by the ex-Leyland Australia "E6" engine with 5-speed 'box or automatic. The SD was basic and lacked even head rests but the SDX had typical "executive" kit. The V8 came in "Rover SDE" automatic guise and was virtually identical to the UK 3500, with those lovely alloy wheels... and "Rover SDS" 5-speed, and a few extra features. The sumptuous "Rover Vanden Plas" was added with the '82 facelift. South African models had an extra tinted section on the upper rear window to keep direct sunlight off rear seat passengers. Like their UK cousins they immediately garnered a reputation for poor build quality and 1978's reasonable sales (3352 units) fell precipitously the following year to just 1729 units and the car struggled until being discontinued in early 1984.

    The Rover SD1 was a great design, both inside and out. I don't recall any of them being sold in Australia. I've said before that Leyland Australia had disappeared down the plughole of doom by that time. The SD1 would probably have been too radical for the conservative Aussie car buyers back then.

    You are right, the Rover SD1 (and the P6 too I would argue) are the best of Rover. Modern, innovative, swashbuckling cars with great presence on the road. No doubt later Rovers were streets ahead in terms of build quality and reliability but the rather boring, frumpy 800 and gimmicky olde worlde 75 leave me cold. What on earth were the styling department thinking? Retro is great for Mini/500/Beetle buyers but likely not what the typical executive car buyer wants.

    Stunning Rovers however the build quality was a bit dodgy due to the BL class war between a Victorian management and the unions.
