AFE power is the company that makes the TRD air filters for TRD so if you want to keep it looking the way it originally came buy the AFE filter cleaning kit (part # 90-50000). It comes with the gold colored oil just like the TRD filter originally came with. That will keep the filter in its original appearance. Also, if you put the filter in front of a fan after cleaning it that will speed up the dry time. It’s a good idea to buy (2) of the TRD filters so you can swap the dirty one with a clean one and have no down time. Then you can take your time cleaning the dirty air filter and have it ready to go when it’s time to change it.
Which kit would you recommend? Just ordered a TRD intake, but have seen a couple AFE cleaning kits
Are you sure it’s still aFe. When I got my trd air filter it literally says on the factory box to use k&n cleaning solution and oil.
Toyota sells TRD air filter cleaning kits that are made by aFe or K&N. I've seen the aFe kits sold for older Toyota models and K&N kits for newer ones. I used an aFe kit on my filter and the dealership said that the filter was still dirty.
Awesome! Loved the pepper intro as well. Can you explain why they use the term “recharge” instead of cleaning? I want to do this today for my TRD filter buuuuut I feel weird about spraying an air filter with oil 🤔 and inhaling that after? 🤔
These TRD filters are designed to be oiled. I believe the material it uses is a bit more porous than the paper so it uses the oil to catch the finer particulate. If you don’t oil it, it doesn’t filter as well. And it’s the engine air filter not the cabin air filter so you won’t be breathing any of the oil. Unless you just mean from the spraying, in which case you can wear a mask or something. P
Can I wash the filter with a pressure sprayer from the self-serve car wash? But briefly.
The instructions specifically state RINSE ONLY REVERSE AIR FLOW DIRECTION, so dirt on the outside doesn’t get pushed into the engine intake side
Also When applying the oil I believe it recommends 5" not 3' away

Listen when dirt gets pushed in with force of the water; will cause more dirt to open the fibers of the filters...

I think people are just too lazy to clean and recharge these TRD filters, so they buy a new one every time instead. That's $60 a pop.
I recharge my filter every 10k miles
Its been a year now, can you please do another video to show how the recharged filter is doing? Especially this time, can you please try to inspect the inside of the tube that goes into the intake to see if there is any dust in there? That inspection will add value to see how clean of the air the engine gets.

Yes it has to be dry before you apply the oil, it has to be sun dried don’t use air to dry it.

What size/product number paper filter fits this?
I don’t believe you can run a paper filter in this system, I’ve tried using one before while I left the TRD filter drying and the clips wouldn’t clamp since the paper filter is a little more thick
The Toyota OEM paper filter fits - I put mine in while cleaning and drying the TRD filter:)
The OEM paper filter catches more particulates I think - but does not “breathe” as well. Like wearing a mask with your nose exposed haha.
So pepper can’t smell the chemicals but you can lol
