Thanks for the tutorial Shawn - very helpful! For those of us with a stock DSLR and telescope on a star tracker (SA GTi), unguided, in a Bortle 8-9 zone, would you recommend about 30-second exposures? For how long ? 1 hour ? This will be my first comet, so any advice is always appreciated !
Hey Shawn, thanks for the video! I already have C/ 2022 E3 in my Stellarium and am trying to plan my composition and wondering if there's a way to display the comet's tail? I realize that it's tail is going to be streaming away from the Sun but if there was an actual visualization, that would make planning much simpler. My target date is Feb. 10th when Mars will be in close proximity to the comet so fingers crossed it'll be clear.
My Stellarium did not display the tail either. Whether it shows I think depends on magnitude and some other factors. That being said, I uninstalled my Stellarium, deleting the data it asks if you want to keep, and then reinstalled (latest version of course). I added back the comet and it now shows the coma and a very faint tail to it.
@@VisibledarkAstro awesome! I also did the same thing except for deleting the old data and needless to say, that didn’t work so I’ll give it a try again and delete the data this time. Thanks Shawn!
It makes its closets approach to Earth Feb 1 and 2, and should be visible in the morning sky for southern hemi observers. You should be able to see it naked eye if it brightens enough as they are predicting!
Hey Shawn great info thanks a lot! I've already added the comet on my stellarium desktop but wanted know if it is possible to add on the mobile app version? I'd love to have it there to be able to find it quick when shooting and also show others trough my phone....thanks in advance!
Appreciate the setup example, straight forward and easy so thank you for that! Are you planning on guiding with PHD2? A nice thing with Stellarium is being able to advance the clock in hours or go even faster and watch the days zing by to see where your preferred object is on any given day.
Hey Dan - I'll probably guide with PHD2. I'll be doing short exposures at high gain and lots of them so cometing guiding may not even be needed. Gonna have to experiment.
great video. so im curious - when a new comet is discovered, who creates that downloadable file with all the data of its orbital elements, and how accurate this data is?
Pretty good guide, concise and to the point, thank you. I just configured it in Stellarium, here's hoping I can get a glimpse of it from my location (above the Equator) before it gets too dim to notice it.
I use Stellarium as my Planetarium for NINA. This has been a great help to get Comets back into my Stellarium in my new mount laptop. And since C/2022 E3 (ZTF) is a current target, this allows me to select it in Stellarium, then add it in NINA to build my sequence for it. I simply check my Polar Alignment in Sharpcap Pro, and start the sequence in NINA. Then come inside to monitor the images being taken. Almost entirely automatic. But I needed to get back the comet folder into Stellarium. Thank You! Still learning in NINA.
Well, thanks for the info and your own experience! It was a fast and convenient to follow walkthrough of the setup. Thumbs up and always: clear skies :)
I followed your excellent instructions, but it's just not there (it's literally not in the list). I even updated Stellarium desktop just now. So confused. Not sure what I'm doing wrong.
hmmm I really don't know why that is happening. odd that its not in the list at all. have you tried uninstalling Stellarium, downloading the most recent version and re-installing?
Thanks a lot! I found the comet very easily today thanks to your information. It was not so spectacular in the 8'' because although the sky was very clear today in Athens-Greece, there was a very bright moon as well. As I was watching the comet through telescope today, I was wondering what really differentiates us from the Neanderthals of yesterday :-)
Thanks! This will help me to confirm what I saw on starry dark sky in NE direction early morning of new moon day. It was low magnitude hazy cloudy object in my binoculars. Now will try with basic Dobsonian.
Thanks for the video Shawn, but I have a question. I can't bring up those icons. My menu button does not bring those options up. Any suggestions? Thanks again
Thank you from Austria
Many thanks man !
Thank you- nice guide!
Very nice tutorial, useful thx!
Great info. I'm subbed!
Thanks!
Welcome!

Yes 30sec on a star tracker unguided should be fine. As long as your polar alignment is good. Take lots of exposures. An hour would be good for sure.
Excellent tutorial. Followed your instructions and it worked!
thanks!!

I’m in the Southern Hemisphere will it be visible with the naked eye ?

sorry I don't know about the mobile version. I actually don't use it.
The Stellarium app on my phone doesn't have that ability. Do I need the paid version?
I have the same question! I'd love to be able to track it trough my smartphone🤔
Two thumbs up 👍🏼👍🏼. Thank you for this!!! Greetings from Quito, Ecuador.
ZTF not in the list of downloaded comets. What now? Whoops - found it. Thanks.
Thank you so much, I didn't know that adding comets to Stellarium is possible.
Thank you so much and much appreciated!!!!! That really helps😊😊

hello, beside ztf commet could you suggest any other good comet to add ? or even a asteroid? please? thank you.
Awesome-Thanks so much-From Cornwall UK
Thanks Shawn...very clear instructions.
Thank you for the tutorial, I now have the comet and other objects 😃

This was super-helpful - thanks so much for taking the time to post! :D
Any safe link to download the new version of stellarium?
