  • On April 22, 1994, Richard Milhous Nixon, the 37th President of the United States, died after suffering a stroke four days earlier. His public funeral followed five days later at the Richard Nixon Presidential Library and Museum in his hometown of Yorba Linda, California. In keeping with his personal wishes, Nixon's funeral was not a full state funeral, though his body did lie in repose in the Nixon Library lobby prior to the funeral services

What a classy gesture by President & Mrs. Carter at 1:37:04. Carter strongly disliked Nixon and yet was the only former president who toured the museum before the funeral. Just goes to show how Carter always rose above the politics of the moment-the most honorable president this nation has ever elected.

If we had followed his guidance on energy policy, the climate crisis wouldn’t be nearly as severe as it is now. The U.S. wouldn’t be addicted to Saudi oil either. But no, everyone needed to feel good even if it was a lie. That’s how we got the worst president in American history who destroyed the middle class and sold arms to Iran.

This was a man with no quit in him. For a good while he was Public Enemy # 1. He lived that down and took his rightful place as an Elder Statesman. Minus Watergate, Richard Nixon was at the very top of the Best President List. He took his lumps, he knew certain honors would never be bestowed upon him. He had enough class to know that there would be controversy to him laying in state in the Capitol. He chose to be taken to California, to be buried at his Presidential Library. His turf. Smart man, always. I will miss him. Compared to Trump, Nixon was a prince. Farewell Mr. President.

Despite the Watergate Scandal, Richard Nixon was a very good president. For improving relations with China and Soviet Union, ending the Vietnam War, did so much for the environment, made Neil Armstrong go to the Moon and coming back home, and definitely was the best president for Native people by signing more than 50 legislative measures supporting them and their tribes. It’s nice that it was all inspired by his coach who was Native American in College who helped him get better at football and giving him more confidence. Which he was eternity grateful for and even told his staff about it. He was Abraham Lincoln to them. Which is ironic because he really looked up to Abraham Lincoln. I finished watching the movie Nixon today and I really enjoyed it.

Initially, Spiro Agnew did not want to attend the funeral but after his secretary begged him to attend (because, after all, Nixon was the one that made him Vice President) did Agnew agree to attend.
Nixon and Agnew were hardly close to one another. They never spoke to each other after Agnew resigned the Vice Presidency due to a scandal of his own that's unrelated to Watergate. Agnew even refused to take any of Nixon's calls. But in the end, as a gesture of reconciliation, Agnew accepted the invitation to attend the funeral.
Nixon made many enemies. There were some former WH aides who were not invited to the funeral. Among them were John Dean, John Ehrlichman, Jeb Stuart Magruder, and Alexander Butterfield.

During his years in office, President Nixon did many positive things. He ended the draft, and lowered the voting age from twenty-one to eighteen. He signed the Paris Peace Accords ending the Vietnam War. He founded the Environmental Protection Agency in 1970. He put women's rights into law with Title IX which outlawed gender bias at colleges and universities receiving Federal money. He also became the first President to give Native Americans the right to self-determination by ending the policy of forced assimilation and returning their sacred lands. He participated in the Strategic Arms Limitation Talks (SALT) with Soviet Secretary Brezhnev to temper the Cold War through diplomacy. He was the first President to visit China, where he worked with the Chinese for more normalized relations with that country. BUT......unfortunately he displayed terrible personal judgement in thinking he was above the law in the Watergate scandal, which led to his resigning from office. He was the best and the worst of Chief Executives.

Also, it is apparent that Clinton left no stone unturned by utilizing his presidential/White House powers in making this historical funeral extremely powerful and memorable. I wasn’t a Clinton fan back in the day. However, I have respect for his class act on this occasion. I was 20 when Nixon died. I read his memoirs (twice) and most of Nixon’s books. This video mean a great deal to me! I taped the full funeral in 1994 and listened to it over 50 times in the 10 years that followed, whereupon the tapes unfortunately got destroyed. Now that this is up on You Tube, I will most likely listen to it another 50 times! .......The patriotic music that was played during this funeral is unsurpassed anywhere. Believe me! If it were this good elsewhere, I would know! It is the best that there is to be found, especially all in one place like this! THANK YOU SO MUCH, MEMORYRETRO, for posting this! Your 54,000 views may very well double to 108,000, just from my listening to it over the next few years! .........No American citizen should ever miss out on this wonderful music and the wonderful eulogies and messages contained in this video! There should actually be, at least, 300 million views - one (or more) for each American citizen! It would make us a better country!

I remember watching this with my parents and brother. My dad always said that Nixon was not as bad a President as he was made out to be, but he WAS clueless and self-motivated enough to not deserve to be the POTUS. In his later life, he became much more aware of what he had done and became a watchdog of a sort. Wrote some brilliant books. For me, judging from what has happened since 2016, I give Nixon credit for preserving his dignity and the nation's sanity by resigning when he did... unlike another ex-POTUS who is truly self-motivated and SELFISH and possesses not a SHRED of dignity.

As I stated above "Watergate aside", he was in fact a great president. He ended the Vietnam war, gave 18 year olds the right to vote, ended the military draft, opened the door to diplomatic relations with China, kept the Russians out of the middle east, initiated the SALT Treaty with the USSR and created the EPA. Along the way and unbeknownst to the president, some people working for his reelection committee tried to bug his opponents phone line. What have you done lately Tyson ?

I had been busted down to private so I volunteered figuring that either way I was the low man, I remember them taking us over to headquarters and telling us that Nixon was going to die(it hadn't reached the news) and how it would be similar to when his wife past away,to give us a blueprint we watched a video of the former first lady and how to go about not looking dumb carrying 2 big old wooden ramps behind the loader (if you watch footage of when they loaded him on plane to come to el toro, that national guard base?it had a loader that had a ramp built-in,
,and that the whole world would be watching and leaders of the world past presidents would be landing on our base. Nixon was the president when I was born and after I was discharged about 3 later the Richard Nixon presidential library sent me a nice certificate to recognize my participation.
