My mom so badly wanted to see them live but the 4 times she tried fate intervened. And by fate i don`t mean "oops sold out" or "dang concert cancelled" i mean almost dying in a car crash, mother in law actually dying of cancer, getting stranded in 5ft of snow from a freak snow storm nobody predicted in the middle of nowhere and the one time she actually got as far as buying tickets she gets robbed and stabbed on the way to her car to drive to the concert. She was not meant to see them live.
Goth metal is typically creepy, atmospheric and dark; horror themed. Type-O never took themselves too seriously, but they made the best goth album ever-October Rust.
October Rust is in my top 5 best albums ever...every song is so beautiful and moody. You should listen to Love You To Death...yes, it's gothy, but also romantic and sexy. And not heavy. Cuz TON can get heavy and gritty, too. And just a personal note, I always hung out w the guys when they played the west coast, and Peter Steele was a very sweet, funny guy. I miss him all the time.
Type O is one of those bands that doesn't take themselves that seriously. The lead man is/was Peter Steele. He was known to be a hopeless romantic. Much of their music is borderline satirical. Black #1 is the hair dye. Goth girls won't leave the house with the roots of their hair showing. "Dye is black...black #1" I highly recommend "Christian Woman" and "My Girlfriend's Girlfriend". You will have a feel of what the drab four were about. 🤘😎
Pete steel always put comedy and irony in his songs, this was about a goth girl he dated that was so obsessed with her look that she wouldn't leave the house if her roots were coming through
"You want to go out 'cause it's raining and blowing You can't go out 'cause your roots are showing Dye em black Black no. 1 …" Yes, the title really does refer to hair dye!
Carnivore - "Retaliatiion" is one of my all time favorite albums and was where I was introduced to Peter Steele. The brief guitar solo at 3:53 in "Ground Zero Brooklyn" is one of my favorite from any band and any song, it grabbed me the first time I heard it and it has never let go. One of the band members of Type O Negative was asked why Steele changed his style and the music and he replied that it was 100% because of women, lol. He said that the chicks loved the style and look and that was the motivation for Type O Negative, lol.
It's about loving a Goth girl, who often dye their hair black. Type O are probably more satirical metal than anything else, they didn't mind making fun of themselves along with everything else.
@@Nightwalk444 I always thought it was just poking some fun at the stereotypes of goth girls and the “hot goth” girl who would be completely into how they look.
So happy you two finally got to Type O Negative! RIP Peter Steele. A lot of great goth metal songs here to check out. Love You To Death, My Girlfriend's Girlfriend, Cinnamon Girl, Be My Druidess, are all great listens. Another band in the genre (and there are many great ones!) to check out is Sisters of Mercy. Temple of Love and More are good places to start.
The full version is definitely better but you guys got the gist of it-goth metal equal people dressed in black with black hair dye, giving off vampire vibes.
These guys had the best senses of humor. Never thought of themselves as great artists but they defined goth metal in the late 90's and early 2000's. Peter Steele had an incredible voice. A natural bass with a 2 1/2 octave range and the music is the epitome of what goth metal should be. Atmospheric, personal, achy, dark, and beautiful. The melodies and harmonies Peter Steele wrote are insanely good. A few songs off of Bloody Kisses, the entire October Rust album, and many more after are just musical gems. I have such great memories surrounding listening to them and going to see them. They were a part of who I was in my 20s. I proposed to my wife on the El on the way to see them play with Cradle of Filth and Moonspell at the Riv in Chicago. Peter Steele gave darkness to the world when alive and a noticeable diminishment to it in his passing. I will never forget him. RIP Peter.
I was fortunate enough to see them live once. One of the best shows I have ever seen! They are hilarious and out back Peter Steel was playing football with fans. You guys should also do Wolfmoon and Summer Breeze!
Everything Dies, Everyone I Love is Dead, Christian Woman, My Girlfriend's Girlfriend and the Seals & Croft cover of Summer Breeze. Also check out Peter Steele's band before Type O Negative. Carnivore - Male Supremacy
Gothic has origins in the medieval “dark ages” and refers to the Germanic Goths. In the early 80’s there was a goth movement in music with bands like Bauhaus. In the 90’s there was a big vampire fad and goth culture sort of erupted from that. This song, literally about hair dye. Most goths died their hair black and would not go it if their roots were showing. Type O are a super clever band and have a dark sense of humour. My fave song of theirs is Love You to Death.
What a performer Peter Steele was, sad that he's gone but he left us with some great songs and this is certainly one of them, thank you for reacting to this you guys, keep up the good work!
@Big Homie Steve The Metal Head yeah, there’s a breakdown deep into the song that I think Lex would love because of the riff. I’m sure you know what I’m talking about.
"Lovin' you is like lovin' the dead" ... I think she just laid there. I could swear I've heard a version of this song (maybe a live version) where one time he says the "it's like loving the dead" right before a break down, he says "its like f-ing the dead". I think its a post-breakup song because early in the song he's talking about how they're all about to go out on the town but her roots were showing so she called off their plans to re-dye her hair. So I think he's kinda sick of her.

It’s goth metal which is sadly misunderstood. Everyone thinks it’s super heavy and scary when it’s mostly melodic, full of feels, has a kind of dark or sad feel, and yes it’s metal but usually has a lot of cool vocals.
I freaking love Type O Negative, to the point of obsession. I never get enough of their music. Peter Steele was on another level vocally, lyrically, as well as his bass playing. Everything about this song is fire, but that drumming at the end gets me everytime. Great reaction
