This Thursday I rode in the snowball cancer v500. We had a 2022 mach z 900 and my 2020 sidewinder xtx se 146 with 2.25 lug. We raced about 6 times on gogibbic. He won half the races and I won half the races. Both sleds were stock. His sled was studded and mine was not. It's an impressive sled. Did launch mode every race. Was a fun sled to race against.
Thx for getting the info out. The temps you guys having been having down south of the 49th....great job. Will be fun seeing it up against the Winder/9000 next season. I suspect the same. Doo with an early lead & the 998 slowly reeling it in. Time wil tell.
Being they have had 5 years to compare a benchmark I wouldn’t be surprised if bone stock it takes the Sidewinder, a bit tougher against the Cat because of the gearing and clutching. That being said it seems so many Winder/TCat’s are flashed and that’s where the separation lies. Much bigger power can be had with the 998. From what I have heard the Mach has already well into the teens for boost stock, with that same boost a Winder is between 250-270 HP. To get much over 225-230 on the Mach you better get your wallet out.

Great review! I’ve been waiting for this. I couldn’t bring myself to pay the Mach Z money, so I ordered a Renegade X with the 900TR. I’ve had a few Xs, and I’m sure it’ll be a great ride. Thanks!
@Ilie Bita I added a few options to the base model X package, including the new 900TR. It was about 4K plus taxes less than the Mach Z. I realize the Z comes pretty much fully loaded with options, but still couldn’t justify the price difference.
AJ.... Great video and info. I am curious as to why the suspension feels so good while sagged deep into it's travel, seems like it would be in the "rising rate" area and harsh, quite strange. I am thinking a big guy carrying fuel and bags on a saddlebag tour will have the foot runners dragging on the snow in stock trim. I would think stiffer torsions are needed for that situation. Your thoughts? Also, you mention comfort mode as being very good, any feedback on Sport and Sport plus modes? Thanks.
As the rider of a 2005 Mach Z I would like to point out one error in your review - at least were it concerns myself - you might dare to say it - however - grown up? What is that? I ride mostly with people half my age who for the most part can't keep up if I don't want them too. Unless they have a turbo then I'm in trouble. I have enjoyed the two vids of yours that I have watched on this incarnation and will be paying close attention to how this ride stands up. May have to put my '05 in a museum and get one of these before my family puts me in a museum. I'm gonna ride till then... Good job...
Great review as usual!, bummer the snow disappeared so quickly. There was probably not enough time of use to assess fuel milege, last years 900 turbo was very fuel efficient, close to the 850 etech from what I saw in my riding group. The new R has larger injectors and more HP, need to feed those horses, but who cares! lol
Aj great review. I ordered the new mach. But currently own a 20 renegade x 900 t. My question if i flash the one i have to 205hp maybe a gear should it beat the mach. Considering the mach is 8k more out the door then the x i have . Thanks
The answer is no. The "205" hp tune is only 16 psi. Even if the mach z had the same compressor, it's already faster than the "205" hp tune. But the mach z also has an upgraded compressor. That isn't factoring in the launch control, smart shox, or the lowered ride height.
@@bradscott9865 Only bringing it back for 1 year .....ya it's going to have issues. Never buy any car, truck sled etc on its debut year. Always has problems that need to be ironed out.
I've had my Mach two years now. I've put 6000 miles on it. It's the best sled I've ever owned. Not much will keep up with it or maybe my pals ride like old ladies 🤣
If you ride trail this is the sled to buy or an renegade xrs 900 turbo R. I rode this vs the renagade xrs 850 with smart shox and the Mach z was hands down the better sled for trail riding. The engine sounds is just ridiculous! Easy to operate also and very confortable. We had a new rider with us and was the most confortable and safe on the Z. Hard to believe of a 180hp sled but it is true. The 900 turbo engine from inside source is the engine to get in terms of durability. For me i am a 2stroke lover but this engine changed my mind for trail riding 4 stroke turbo is the way to go from now on.
Well done, I apprecate the honesty and most importantly the enthuisiasm. One question, would one notice a big weight handling difference vs a 2 stroke Renegade 850?
Glad you enjoyed it, going to an 850 will make a massive handling difference. With SD all the weight it over the skis so you really do feel the extra weight, however some folks like the heavier more planted front end feel so it’s really a preference thing. I really enjoyed the Mach, I’m still a 2 stroke guy though at heart.
I went from a ‘19 renny xrs 850 clutched/piped/geared...to a ‘21 renny xrs 900 tuned to 215hp, and I’m going back to an 850 xrs...just cannot get over the lazy and unpredictable throttle response. Anyone who says you can’t notice the weight difference just doesn’t ride aggressive enough IMO. Where I live it’s tight and twisty trails so it’s just not as fun to ride as my older 2-strokes, if I rode in Quebec/Northern Ontario (more wide open trail systems) all winter long then this tuned 900 would be an awesome sled...but going fast in a straight line and pulling away from you buddies on every lake got old pretty quick for me anyways. Just my opinion remember
Aj which sled did you like better links rave re the Mach z , And before you respond to well they’re totally different sleds let me know a couple comparisons you like from one to the other if you’re riding all day
Recent results on the same dyno had the Mach at 6hp less than the Thundercat. But weights around 30 pounds less. 600 ft the Tcat was quicker but the Mach had a speed 3mph faster at the end of 600ft. They never raced 1000 ft because of conditions but by the sounds of those results it will at least be competitive
Looks like you are riding in slush... Thanks for the review before snow check ended... For now I'm gonna stick with a high end shock package and a 2 stroke. Ordered the renegade 600r competition Package... I think it's the best value of all the snow check machines... And I think it will kick butt Corner to corner... Thanks again
Dare we ask for a comparison between the T-Cat and the SRX? When it comes to lake running which of the three animals would take the drag. In the corners we already know the Mach is king 😉
We tried so hard to get it done but unfortunately ran out of winter and our lake went full skating rink in a matter of two days of melt. At this point I still believe the Yamaha is faster on the top end, (few mph) but out of the hole and up to 60mph I’d put my money on the SkiDoo.
After getting my spring order on the 08 mach canceled, I've been waiting 14 years to see Ski-doo bring back the big bad. But God dam, I can't get this one.
Corner to corner is good, it’s a more aggressively pressured front end compared to the Arctic/Yamaha. If you like the AC/Yam handling you’ll find the SD to be heavy steering. If you like the current SD this handles very similarly but because of smart shox it keeps the front end flatter in corners as it stiffens the outside ski shock. It’s a very good suspension package. I’ve got an 850 Renny here with it on but unfortunately the snow all went.
They have played around with power steering but have told us the demand is not there and the weight penalty would be significant. A company like SD would put it on if it were something enough of their buyers asked for
Agreed, absolutely becoming a rich mans sport when you factor in trailers and sleds for the rest of your family if they enjoy riding as well. Then factor in riding gear and repair costs because your average guy doesn't know how to work on these new sleds!
Will any of the manufacturers produce a 2 stroke triple anymore or is that day gone forever. Is it because emissions? With all the technology now, they should be able to make a clean burning sweet ass triple in 2023.
Apex sounded good, but seeing as there are only two running Mach Z’s in all of both America I’m guessing you didn’t hear it yet. This thing sounds better than a stock Apex, 100%.
@@snowtrax I'll have to hear it to believe it. I've never heard a 3 cylinder 4 stroke ever sound better than a 4 cylinder 4 stroke!! It's like saying a V6 Camaro sounds better than a V8 Camaro SS. I'll still take a Thundercat or SRX over this angry turboed Duck :-O
@@snowtrax going by your video demonstrating the launch and taking off last week, I heard enough to know that isn't in the same ballpark as to what an apex sounds like.
Everyone’s entitled to their own opinion, I just know everyone here who have ridden sleds for years say it’s the best sounding as well. I like that they left the stock exhaust a little more aggressive. If your talking about the sound of it just idling I do agree a 4cyl sounds better but this thing when you chop the throttle or hit the launch control sounds incredible. I think maybe we are both right but looking at it for a different angle.
Factory warranty to clean the clocks off heavy 4 strokes. Only one four stroke tickles me and that’s a Yamaha 4 cylinder. Turbo is just forcing more air making high cylinder pressures. I wish rotary engines stayed in sleds
@@rockerdan Man, it's wicked fast but you KNOW that Sidewinder is a rocket ship too. It'll be interesting to get them out on the lake as soon as we can next season.
@@rockerdan I’m a Doo guy but I’m gonna be straight with you, this thing is going to lose most times in top speed tests. The sidewinder is a beast of a sled and it’s power isn’t going to be matched by this thing. Now when it comes to drag races I think that’s where this thing is going to win every time. Assuming equal conditions on each strip, equal rider weight and fuel weight, and equal traction package(aka same amount of studs on both tracks) the launch control is going to help immensely.
@@nsa6790 Agree about top speed but I was talking 1320'.....my Winder had big power once tuned and at 270 was a blast corner to corner, but STOCK the Winder is way too docile for my liking. No snap to lift nose off knolls ect. Even the 900t stock in sport mode had more snap IMO. So my guess is the new 900r will be "quicker" to 1320' stock for stock over the mighty 998.
These new sleds are great 👍 but unfortunately the story about these new powerful snowmobiles are increasingly dangerous to operate its kind of like the 1964-1972 muscle car Era 180 hp or more in a vehicle that weighs less than 1000lbs like what are you trying to prove lol 😆 my 1978 arctic cat El Tigre 500 is plenty fast enough for me at 80+ mph all out and I'm not paying 300 a month sled payment on a machine I might use maybe 7-8 times a season on a trail anyways

Agreed, absolutely becoming a rich mans sport when you factor in trailers and sleds for the rest of your family if they enjoy riding as well. Then factor in riding gear and repair costs because your average guy doesn't know how to work on these new sleds!
@@KTMsoldier1988 Well there is always the used market. If not the sport lineup is a g4 with a very potent 600 for less than 8k.
This ting cost 22k (base) before taxes (15%) in Québec/Canada, where they are made.. this is insane.
Are we going to ignore the fact that at 1.17 he doesn't use that kill switch
At 1:17 I didn’t use the tether, I admit. Oh well. Most times I do but when filming it’s a lot of on/off the sled, my mistake.
Sidewinder will always be the best sounding sled
Sidewinder? You would be in the minority there. Apex had a good sound to it.
Will any of the manufacturers produce a 2 stroke triple anymore or is that day gone forever. Is it because emissions? With all the technology now, they should be able to make a clean burning sweet ass triple in 2023.
No way, the best sounding 4stroke was the Apex, no comparison.
100%
NOOOOO, this should have a been a turbo 2 stroke, that summit should have been a preview of the Mach and 2 stroke domination
not blowing up is nice.
Factory warranty to clean the clocks off heavy 4 strokes. Only one four stroke tickles me and that’s a Yamaha 4 cylinder. Turbo is just forcing more air making high cylinder pressures. I wish rotary engines stayed in sleds
So is this faster then a 850?
Didn't you watch the video? He said it spanked the 850 handily every time easily
In a straight line yes, but get it in the bush with an 850....bye bye Mach
Give me a 2 stroke mach z ...
Any details on top speeds vs srx?
We attempted to get this one shot, but got hit with summer temperatures which melted every trace of snow and ruined our drag strip.
@@snowtrax How do you think they will stack up in say 1320ft?
$20k. I figured as much.
@Steve Mino
You speak truth. The problem is you’re talking practicality. There is no practicality love.
Where the heart is takes one back to childhood dreams.
Should all ride safely and responsibly? Without doubt!
Still passion is powerful!
@@douglasborgaro6801 appreciate it boss.. passion is a powerful command but don't let it take that enjoyment away with factors you don't need.. take care
@Steve Mino
True indeed. But I don’t need to snowmobile. In general it’s one of the least practical and most expensive recreational sports there is, unless you live in snow country. For me that’s a couple hours away.
Despite this, I love it! I’ve always loved it! Every opportunity I get to do it is like Christmas! It brings me back to the days of being a kid.
Snowmobiling is a sport that offers a bit of everything.
Freedom, adventure, peace, serenity, excitement, and pure adrenaline.
Let’s face it, nothing about snowboarding is cheap or even highly practical. But for me it’s all about love!
Love doesn’t always make good sense, but it’s always valuable.
@@douglasborgaro6801 oh for sure it means the same thing to me and that's the other factor is snow accumulation could you imagine having a $20+k snowmobile sitting in your garage when it's 5 above Celsius in the middle of January? 80 mph is fast enough for me lol
@Steve Mino
Well, Steve, now that you mention it I actually do have one of those sleds in my garage.
I dreamed of it as a kid and a few years back I actually Was able to get one. It’s a ZR9000 Thundercat.
It’s pure hellfire and it’s my pride & joy!
It was one of my dreams from long ago and I’ve loved every minute of it!
I figure, what the hell, you only go around once!
20k
20k and halogen bulbs...........
Like it but not $20,000 worth!
None of these new machines are worth that kind of money. Lol Manufacturers and dealers think everyone's rich. Even new trucks aren't worth the 80,000 they want for the cheaply built pieces of junk. Lots of car dealers are struggling now because no one's buying or stupid enough to pay these dumb prices.
Mach Zed not zeee!
I think they should be called cheater shocks
Not worth 20+k for as short of a sled seasons we get..
It's not for everyone, but there's no question snowmobilers are buying it.
Can buy a brand new Harley Davidson for this kind of money.
Can't ride it down the trails in the winter though...
@@snowtrax true. 👍
With the amount of 2021 snow in my area i could of tho.
@@kyletracey5819 That's right. Lol where I'm at snowmobiling is all but dead in most of southern and central Ontario. A bike you get half a year of riding or more. A sled you get 3 weeks now. Sometimes less. :(
Last three winters sucked and when there is a bit of snow the OFSC doesn't even groom it. Sold my Formula Z 700 last year. I'm getting a bike in the future for sure!!
@@horatiohuffnagel7978 i know. Barrie. Trails never groomed past cpl seasons. 2 out of town rides last and this season. May sell my 18 xrs
