If You Hear "You're Under Investigation", Don't Believe Straight Away

- Each year, more than 15 million Americans fall for phony schemes connected with identity fraud. Nowadays you have to be especially cautious because scammers are using a new trick called "spoofing". This scheme allows identity thieves to create fake emails, phone numbers, or IP addresses so that they can pretend to be someone else in order to get hold of your personal information. A very common fraud scheme is calling people and pretending to be FBI.
If you want to check whether or not the number that’s called you is fake, wait for at least 5 minutes. Otherwise, you’ll probably get reconnected to the scammer. If you’re suspicious of a phone call, report it to the police. They may be able to figure out where the call has come from. And please tell your older family members and friends about this fraud, and help them stay safe and informed so that they don’t get taken advantage of by these identity thieves.

SUMMARY
-There are programs out there such as "SpoofCard" that allow practically anyone to disguise their phone number with the one of their choosing.
-The person on the other end calls you by your name and immediately starts building up the sense of urgency. They inform you that the matter is extremely important and ask you if you’re aware that you're under investigation by the FBI. Paige Hanson, the chief of identity education at LifeLock, a company that specializes in identity theft protection, explains that this is one of the most common tricks criminals use to get to your personal data.
-You pick up the phone and a robotic voice informs you that officers are coming to arrest you. You hear, "You're going to be taken into custody due to a number of serious allegations. You can get back to us so that we can discuss the matter before any legal action is taken against you."
-One day you might get a call, and the person on the line will present themselves as a police officer or a representative of your bank. They’ll inform you that your bank has been exposed to fraud and that your account was compromised. You’ll be asked to provide your card number, security code, and even your PIN number.
-Remember that the police (and your bank) will never ever ask you to reveal your PIN number or bank account details over the phone, withdraw cash and send it somewhere with a courier, send your personal belongings such as bank cards off with a courier or taxi or somehow else.

So, I got a call as well, but I started cursing them out in a manner and they hung up, I blocked them and called the REAL FBI!!
I put on location, and told the FBI where they were, and had the police take me to the location... NOW, THEY are under investigation!!! 🙂

A friend of mine got the "we are coming to arrest you" call, and he said "OK, then where do I live? Come and get me!". Of course they did not know and they hung up right away haha.

That’s hilarious
I’ll do it if I get the call. Tell your friend I sad thanks for the tip!
You've got a smart friend✊👍👍

If I got a call from a Scammer saying "Police are coming to arrest you", I'd just say : "Okay cool, Ill wait for them."
EDIT: Thanks for the likes, However didn't expect it at all. :D Hope everyone is well in the current situation we are all in!

I don't even answer unknown numbers, if they have something really important they can leave a voicemail.
The worst is when they call a business line, like when im at work i have to answer every call so it wastes my time and my customers’ time 🙄
That is exactly what I do.!!!

My grandparents almost fell for “the grandparents scam” if you don’t know what that is then let me explain. The scammer calls the grandparent and and claims to be a grandchild and says they’ve been arrested in Canada or something and they need you to wire them money for bail. Anyway my grandparents lived in Vegas at this time. My grandmother is at bingo when “my cousin” calls my grandfather at home, so grandpa goes to the casino where my grandmother was and tells her about it, but she’s smart and thinks this sounds suspicious so what does she do? She calls my actual cousin who tells her he hasn’t been arrested in Canada. So she calls back the scammer and quizzes him on certain things that only my cousin would know and wouldn’t you believe it he failed go figure. If it had just been my grandfather he would have fell for it, but my grandmother was “one smart cookie” as my grandfather liked to say.
Clever!!!!!
Bianca Williams yes she is she’s great I love her I’ll be seeing her next month when she comes to visit.
cool
:D
superphantom100 good for your grandma! Thank you for the information
My mom is over 70 and she was almost scammed, by one of these. A lady was on the phone telling mom to get a gift card from asda and send it to a code place and then she would get alot of money. I kept telling her it was a scam but she didn't believe me, she told me to take her up to the shop, which I did but still I kept telling her. Lucky the lady at the store told her it was a scam and I said *Thank you !*
That was sketchy
that's how moms work, don't they :D
I'm so glad your mom listened to the lady at the store!!!
My favorite phone answering when it is an unknown number is:
"HI! You're my 10th caller and you're live on the air!
Who am I speaking to and do you have the answer to today's trivia question?"
Scammer: **Intense Sweating**
Hahaha
When they call just "hello this is 911 what is your emergency"
Yesssssssssssss lol 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
I thought that was illegal lol

Aaliyah Miller Same with me. I'm old enough to remember the "old days" of the house phone, before even answering machines and caller ID, when you took your chances whenever you answered a call that it would be a telemarketer on the other end. Before getting a cell phone, I screened my calls with an answering machine.
RIGHT!
Exactly. If it's important they will leave a message. Smartwatches freaking awesome. I don't even have to find my phone to ignore the call.😅😆
Aaliyah Miller I literally block numbers and don’t answer if it’s some one I don’t know
I do the same thing.
No! Don’t hang up. Waste as much of their time without giving up personal info

A string of obscenities and theological curses will make life unpleasant for these scammers. If you can guess the accent, then give a warning that prisons in Russia, China, Ukraine, India, Nigeria, and Mexico are really nasty.

You know that nieghbor you don't like......ya, give scammers all their info.
my favorite way of wasting scammer's time is by saying "hello, agent *random name* FBI fraud division" they always panic and hang up
Don't give your name or any personal information to someone who calls you ever.
Gamma Light or even emails you. I had a few emails a time or two that asked me for my bank account #. Needless to say, I didn't fall for it.
I agree!
laser325. I had a group of people call me saying I missed a court date and that state police were coming to arrest me, further in the conversation they said "unless I post a retainer" I'll be "taken in" by the police. They'd given me a case # and several phone lines to call insisting it was a very urgent matter but wouldn't tell me what the "case" was about and that I'd find out in court..
I don't do anything to get in trouble so before long I saw it as a very suspicious conversion. They knew just enough about me to get me worked up and that's how they get your attention. They had three people claiming to be with the federal government, an extremely unnerving proposition, but they were useing public information I left online intentionally incorrect (aka my stocker trap). It was incredible how thought out and elaborate their scam was.
Two weeks later my bank blocked all my accounts due to fraud alerts triggered from an unregistered ip address buying random stuff including an Uber with my bank information.
I never speak or share my SSN no matter what and I never give bank or identifying info to anyone I don't have a physical *verified* invoice for. The suggestions you gave and the ones I use are rules to live by.

I would say to a “Your are arrested” scam, “Wait a minute, if you are letting me escape, why bother to call me in the first place, Scammer?”,
Lol exactly
I would think they are watching my house, waiting for me to 'escape', so they can burgle the house. I might just scream loudly to give them ear-ache.
I think my mom got a call like that, and she was like "me no speaking english" "no, no sorry, sorry, no english" "spanish, no english" and she just hung up xdxd

My dad did this. he had a accent and started to talk really fast " me no understand. I do dont speak thee English. HUH! NO English! NO English! I don't speak thee English." They hung up on him

FBI: y u no talk to me anymore?
Simple solution, don't answer, make them leave a message. If no message then it's not important.
I get these calls and love to play with them because I know that _time is money_ to them.
Once I got a few calls from *the US Grants Department* and the Indian caller was tasked to send me $50,000. I said, "Oh, yes, you're office is right next door to the Defense Department, aren't you?"
"Yes," he said and asked for my bank account and routing numbers. I said that information was private but he could just mail my check, send Paypal, or a Western Union money order but he was undeterred. I then begged off because "Jeeves just advised me that that my golfing partner, George W. Bush, had arrived and we have a tight tee time. I hung up.
Yes, I got a few more. After that, I advised that I had so much money already that I didn't know what to do with it all. On the last call I asked, "Could he make (spending) suggestions for me?"
*He hung up.*
Nice haha
if it is an Indian caller I put on my best accent and say "Welcome to the New Dehli Deli, we have a wide array of roast beef sandwiches for your eating pleasure."
😂
Lol

I am SO sick of scam calls, that I no longer answer my phone unless I'm in a bad mood. If it was up to me, we would go back to a form of operator connection that the receiver can disconnect but the scammers pay for. Problem solved.
I just wait for the call to be gone
@Caleb Pederson I LOVE messing with the scammers. When I am busy, or just not in the mood, I will tell them to hold on for a sec then put the phone down for 5 minutes then come back and apologize...then put them on hold again. You can keep a motivated scammer on hold for 30-40 minutes.
"Actually, sir, I happen to be a member of the (Insert City name here) Cybercrime response division. Very nice of you to keep talking for so long, I'm tracing your call as we speak."

All of these scams are happening up here in Canada as well. Sadly, old people fall victim to this because they grew up in a more innocent and trusting era. 50 years ago we just had dial phones with no call display and no answering machine. When the phone rang you never thought twice about not picking up. I don't remember any telemarketers calling. Another thing, if you lived in a small town and went downtown to the hardware store, you left the keys in your 1959 Oldsmobile! Nobody would ever think to steal it!
David Rossco you should nicely tell all the old people you know! And help them ! Have a great day!
It is all due to social media and over population on earth. Everyone wants to be wealthy with not enough resources.
It's so sad that things are not still that innocent. I've noticed that so many of them have a similar foreign accent. I told one of them to put a bullet in Alice's head. That was the name given on the recorded message. The guy hung up. Imagine that!
So true David Rossco... That's why our elders need to be "retrained" about scammers!! That's one thing I love about AARP is that they do a lot of education about scams, and I see a lot of banks have stuff posted and on their websites!!
And Canada is supposed to be all nice how sad

This lady at a store said she had $50 gift cards for $20, she showed me the cards. I said "it's empty, no quantity". When she talked it smelled like smoke. Of course I knew it was a scam, I saw her asking other people the same questions or offers to other people

Very informative video! I’m a police officer and a few months ago I took a report from a young guy who was scammed for $1000 by one of these schemes. They used the app to disguise their number as my police dept’s number and told him his bank account was compromised. Long story short he fell for it and complied with their demands & he lost everything he had in his bank account. If you’re being investigated by the actual police or FBI you will not know it until you’re in handcuffs.
I get those frequently! My last one went like this:
Caller: I’m from the FBI and you have an outstanding warrant and if you don’t pay a fine, I’ll come and arrest you
Me: Ok, I just made dinner. You can join me
Caller: Uh, huh?
Me: What are you wearing? I love guys in uniform
Caller: Ma’am, you’re in serious trouble
Me: Oh goodie, are you bringing handcuffs? I’ll open a bottle of wine.
Caller hangs up....

How would I react to a scanner call? Well, for one I would not answer. I do not answer numbers that are unknown.
Even if the scammer tried calling me several times to try and make a sense or urgency, I still wouldn't answer. If your not in my address book, then we haven't met and I'm not answering. And, if I know you, trying to call me (say on a friends phone, your phone went dead or something) you would contact me on other services- such as Facebook Messenger. No excuse why you should be calling me via an unknown number. And that's why I will not answer, ever.

Bingo.
I've been "investigated" by the IRS & SSA for "criminal activity on my accounts". "Officer Ryan" has left messages informing me that I"ll be arrested if I don't respond to his call. (I don't & he hasn't.) "Microsoft" has called me to tell me my computer is sending out "error messages", & they need to access it in order to fix it. They've also called me to tell that the tech firm I contacted with for service has gone out of business & I'm due a refund. SSA has contacted me, wanting to review my information over the phone. It's a rule in our house not to answer calls from any number we don't recognize- no matter how many times they call. Any messages left are reviewed for possible legitimacy I also report these calls to the proper agency, & I would encourage others to do the same. Lastly, & most important, stay informed & educate yourself so that you're less likely to be taken for everything you've got.. Knowledge is one of your best defenses against fraud.

I had a call several years ago saying it was the FBI. The scammer said that I owed back taxes on the house I was living in & if I didn’t pay RIGHT THEN & THERE, a sheriff officer would come in about 15 to 20 minutes to arrest me! I asked if I could repeat the information that was just given to me to make sure I understood it correctly. The scammer agreed. I repeated what the scammer had said & he confirmed I had the correct information. I asked if I could ask 1 more question. The scammer agreed to let me ask 1 more question. I asked him HOW I owed back taxes on a house that I DIDN’T OWN?! The scammer replied with “what”? I said “ I don’t own the house, I’m RENTING it & asked HOW I owed back taxes on a house I DIDN’T OWN?! The scammer hung up! 😆😆🤣🤣
I had one of those calls. I had recently cleared up a misunderstanding where Canada Revenue Agency thought I owed them $18,000 so it wasn't unreasonable to think the call was legitimate. I hadn't answered the call so they left a voicemail. I didn't want to ignore the call if it was a legit CRA call but was suspicious. So rather than calling the number on the voicemail I called the number I had in my contacts. They confirmed that my original problem had, indeed, been cleared up and I was NOT about to be arrested
if the fbi calls me, ill just hang up cus im canadian lol
Just play an audio clip from a Brandon Rogers's clip; they will soon realize that you have problems worse than theirs and thus leave you alone.
Another common scam is they will call pretending to be a Microsoft technician or something and claim that your PC has been compromised. They then give you instructions that will give them remote access to your PC so that they can "fix" it.
I've gotten such calls twice. I keep them on the line as long as possible pretending to be following their instructions just to waste their time. When they realize I'm messing with them I claim to be an off duty police officer and they usually hang up.
If they said “the police are coming to arrest you” I’d be like “cool, I don’t know why but okay” then I would just hang up and go about my day
Thanks for help! Someone was calling me right now tho, but I hanged up

It once happened to me. But it was regarding my bank account. I started speaking gibberish pretending to speak a language I don't know and then finally hung up. 😂
I've gotten some phone calls like that. What I do is whenever I see a number I don't know, or it shows up as "Unknown", then I just won't answer.
Who'd troll them and get them to rage?😂
Lavender Mae
Yeah and I would just scary them bye giggling like crazy
What you do when the “FBI” you say sorry number i live in canada that just throws them off like hot chess in a bun when rip it in half
Latest trend in scamming is this scenario: 1. A man is calling you and he pretends he is calling from the police and he and his group has eavesdropped a dangerous scam group. The "policeman" tells you that someone from this group are going to call you within some minutes and is going to ask you to send you money for some reason. The "policeman" ask you to give the scammer these money in order that they can capture the scammers with the money as a strong evidence. 2. Some minutes after you hang up a second man calls you with the regular scam tactics for which you have been warned about from the "policeman" before. 3. You agree to give them the money as you think you are helping the police and the scammer instructs you how to give them the money. 3. After you give the money "surprisingly" nothing else happens. If you call the (real) police they will know nothing about as no real policeman was calling you earlier.
"You're going to be arrested!"
Me: "-snorts- been there, done that... Come get me, then." *click*
