Ein Airbus A400M beim Anlassen der Triebwerke. Spannend finden wir, wie sich im Video die Ansicht der Propeller durch die Änderung der Drehzahl ändert. (ab 2:28 min)
When the Luftwaffe were nice enough to give me a tour a while back, I was shocked to see that inside the engine inlet you can actually SEE the front fan blades of the turbine. For a turboprop, they were huge - but I’ve never seen that on any turboprop engine before. The FADEC auto-start is really amazing, very fast and not even a slight puff of smoke when the fuel is added. The tech in the plane is just crazy, even with loss of hydraulic systems or engines it still retains full autopilot and autoland capabilities. Hell it even had foot warmers, electric seats, and a really nice HUD.
Most likely reason for not seeing fan blades on other turboprops such as the PT6 is that most smaller ones are reverse flow. Air enters in the front scoop, then turns around and goes against direction of flight through the hot section and then exits in the front through the two exhaust ports.
This quick-start capability is impressive. All four engines running at idle within just over two minutes (without even waiting to check the engine parameters, eh?). Then one more minute to taxi power and you're ready to go. Useful when the airfield is under attack and you have to get out of there fast .
Has to - if an engine fails they will default to feathered pitch, otherwise the drag would be uncontrollable. Of course it has other benefits like constant-speed (pitch increases as you increase power, but the relative speed of the prop stays the same for efficiency) and you can reverse the pitch for short landing and even backing up on the ramp.
Starting the engines up one at a time. In this video, you can clearly tell that the turboprop engine is a jet propeller engine, and not a turbocharged piston engine. When the engines reach full idle speed, the "box fan" sound is added to the jet whine.
These are the loud turboprops that usually fly around 29,000ft to 36,000ft high, can go speeds of up to 580mph, and are NOISY!! (I heard one at 36,000ft about 1 and a half months ago, at 420mph, and was so loud, it vibrated the house a bit!!)
Notice how the propeller blades' tips are swept back and are elliptical in shape to reduce vortices at the tips just as winglets reduce wingtip vortices and thus reduce lift-induced drag!
Yup, scimitar prop, I think it’s more to delay the onset of supersonic flow and turbulence at the tips, which travel much faster and create all kinds of problems.
Would like to hear more such sounds, especially the moment from pushback to engine start sound from inside cabin, please share links if anyone has! Thanks
Y know, i wonder if 1 day Airbus build the successor of the either C-5 or C-17, powered with another prop engine. Another biggest prop driven plane after the An-22 maybe?
825kmh max... pretty good for Aindustries to finish 2nd sixty (60!) years after the TU-95's (still going strong!) first reached 950kmh (with 1k-hp more per engine). Time for the A400 to go double-counter-rotating and become the civilian turboprop airliner that finally send the gas-guzzling f...g jets packing!
I hope whatever country buys this plane doesn't have any main heavy battle tanks to haul anywhere because those engines wouldn't be able to do it. Give me a C-17 any day.
The TU-95 is a strategic long-range bomber, not a tactical transport. The A400 requires a huge fuselage obviously - which creates a lot of drag. Compared to the C-17 it’s not quite as capable, but it wasn’t supposed to be either. It is however MUCH more economical and costs about half as much.
some aircraft do that in order to prevent engine torque roll , if you have too many things that are rotating the same way itll start to turn the whole plane from the torque i dont know if that made any sense but i tried my best to explain it , but i could be totally wrong
It’s more for engine-out performance, if the A400 loses an engine, the torque of any remaining engines will still be negligible. The yaw is still handled by the computers however, and you can still use autopilot and auto land (I think even with two engines out?)
On the contrary - the proceeding blade essentially blanks out the next blade, it’s not actually seeing much of any air flow. The strain is absolutely nothing compared to full takeoff power with the blades in a normal fine pitch for TO power. Most turboprop engines do this, from a Pilatus to a Caravan, king airs, etc. of course everyone also uses PT6’s lol. But yeah same with the commuter turboprops. They also default to feathered position for safety anyways, in the event of an engine failure - it’s kinda where the blades “naturally” want to be.
This is a new concept called down between engine(DBE) Airbus introduced on the A400, That way you can eliminate the torque induced problems and reduce prop wash other planes have(like C-130) Also it helps in case of outboard engines failure.
does it mean that the turbines are also totally different (2 turbines clockwise and 2 turbines counter clockwise) or just the props with their shafts? because if the turbines are different too, that looks like a logistical nightmare to stock parts for 2 different types of turbines for the same aircraft
No, the turbine engines are identical. There are two versions of the propeller gearbox, one of which has an additional gear after the input pinion inverting the sense of propeller rotation.
So the MAIN reason for this is because of the so called gyroscopic moments that the rotating propellers induce. The easiest way to explain it is by doing this the forces produced by the aircraft are balanced. :)
When the Luftwaffe were nice enough to give me a tour a while back, I was shocked to see that inside the engine inlet you can actually SEE the front fan blades of the turbine. For a turboprop, they were huge - but I’ve never seen that on any turboprop engine before.

OMG IT S LOUD
3:00 Now THAT is the sound I like.
Engineering masterpiece - the counter rotating engines on each wing is brilliant! It reminds me of the Lockheed P-38 in that regard. Beautiful!
The biggest engine ever made I've seen. Great plane.....
👍👍👍👍👍👍👍
The howling sound starting the engine is awesome. It reminds me of a F-104s Starfighter howling sound... 👌👍😎👆👂👂
the howling sound is like a Hoover vacuum cleaner! its LOUD !

So cool to see those scimitars sync up!
What a MONSTER!!!
That turboprop sound is amazing
Did you know this is the famous plane in Turbo Prop Flight Simulator? Nice to see that it’s actually not made up and is real!

Impressive, how the flaps of the propellers can change direction in order to control the airflow!

Jacky Claiborne it took me a while to learn that a turboprop was a jet prop and not a turbocharged piston engine
I thought the screams were from a nearby Jet.
