Sam is the physical spirit of Halloween, symbolizing both its innocent whimsy and underlying darkness. Basically, its his job to ensure that the spirit of Halloween is kept alive and punishes those who ignores or defies the ancient traditions, often in sadistic and ironic ways. The rules are to always to give out candy to trick or treaters, always wear a costume, never put out the flames before midnight and last but least, respect the dead. While we are not sure his real age but I believe that Sam has been around for at least a few hundred or thousands of years. Its also kind of crazy how his powers and abilities work in this. Sam is kind of a badass. Love this movie man. It has a nice balance of comedy and horror but some lore and history that is really interesting. Also really like how the story is told and really love the musical score.
Sam was my big question through all this! Dude is basically unkillable but also such a nice little guy when you’re following the rules! I like that he’s the spirit of Halloween and been alive for centuries. It just makes his personality all that more interesting. And the story in this was so great! I loved getting a little bit of time with multiple Halloween story lines and I loved how they all met at the end. The music was incredible and I wish I didn’t have to edit around it so much to avoid copyright flags lol. Thanks for the great comment as always and for watching along with me! Sam is a part of Samhain which is a huge part of Halloween lore and is from the Celtic Pagans. But the little Sam is absolutely adorable. Quickly became a favorite of mine. Sam is up there with the horror icon greats in my opinion! And he would probably kick their ass since he seems unkillable 👀 I like that this movie went into the backstory of Halloween because I didn’t know anything about that And I will be watching this every year for sure…. I saw this movie probably when I was 7 years old (honestly way too young to see this movie lol) and was so traumatized by the werewolf scene like the scene where they reveal themselves totally caught me off guard but Mr Wilkins being the “vampire” never came to thought in my head cause of the makeup he had and my child self wasn’t good with details. The zombie kids was always my favorite of the stories bc those kids were assholes to Wanda except that one guy but he knew wha he was doing so they got their karma. Sam’s real face was so creepy looking a whole pumpkin monster love that idea he definitely killed that lady appropriately halloween haters will not be tolerated😂. I just love how this movie connects all the stories with their twists and reveals. I will definitely be seated for the sequel.
That werewolf scene is one of the wildest things I’ve seen in a while. That will stay with me for a while after this reaction lol. I can’t imagine seeing this movie as a kid! I would’ve been scarred for life 😂

So, a lot of the things we do for Halloween stems from Samhain. Giving out treats as a form of payment or offerings for the denizens of the otherworld, costumes to blend in, and Jack-o-lanterns to give us protection or just fire in general. There’s a lot more. But it’s really cool how a lot of holidays we celebrate stem from pagan practices, I.e. Christmas and Easter. Glad you enjoyed the movie. It’s my favorite movie to watch every year! For sure, Trick 'r Treat is a Halloween STAPLE in my opinion. It's right up there with Halloween 1978. Love the Sam character. He simply represents the spirit of Halloween. As long as you obey the rules of the holiday, you're safe.
i forgot about that scene of the kid and i regret eating while watching this . Also this town parties hard like nyc at halloween (we've had parades all month here not all televised but i love it) Also also, Wiccan here, yes it's called Samhain (pronounced like the little girl says) actually the pumpkin is named Sam he's the personification of halloween in this film.....no we dont do blood sacrifices in modern times. it's more like we leave a seat for someone we loved at the table with a plate and a few candles or well thats what my family does for it

The pumpkin head kid is Sam short for Samhain as in the original. Name of the holiday that became All Hallows Eve then it became known as Halloween. So Sam goes back to the beginning of the holiday he is the embodiment of all things of that holiday. All the rules and traditions an mythology an lore if you break a rule or tradition hes also the inforcer so he will punish you. Then yeas that is why he let the old man live because he got candy. Basically forgot everything you know about Halloween it had a much darker origin. Carved things like turnips an whatever because known as Jack o lanterns they when lite keep you safe from evil sprits an things. Thats why in the qury pit the zombie kids didn't appear until the last Jack o lantern was put out down there. Now the one about checking your candy that came along time later. When it was already called Halloween that started mainly when a kid. Eat a poisoned pixie stick an died he was Trick or Treating an no one new where he got it from. But the police figured it out eventually the kids father gave it to him an four other kids the other kids never eat them. So they where just fine but he planned on killing his son because he put a life insurance policy on him an wanted to collect. On it basically so that kind of started the hole checking your candy rule. Because there was no trick or treating before it became Halloween. The people put out treats for the undead sprits that came into are world. So those treats where off limits to the living. So you only know the modern day version of the holiday called Halloween. But before that it was something completely different an darker. Now the jack o lanterns didn't help the old man because. He made the zombie kids that came for him so they where there for revenge. Lite Jack o lanterns only keep you safe from sprits not out for revenge against you. Like they where keeping the kids in the qury safe until they put out the last jack o lantern. Now the werewolf transformation scene. That is a lesser known an used transformation that is more like a skin walker transformation. They take off their human skin to reveal the werewolf underneath it. Now the kid looking into the dressing rooms was added. Just to show that kids face on screen because hes in the inter movie but you never see his face. He played Sam 95 percent of the time. The other 5 percent of the time it was during the fight scenes with the old man. Then a dwarf stuntwoman played Sam for those scenes. Now the pumpkin head look came from on the Shout/Scream Factory Collector's Edition of this movie. On the audio commentary or on a bonus feature the writer and director Michael Dougherty told the practical effects artist when it comes to Sams real head. Think a pumpkin combined with a unborn fetus skull those are Michael Doughertys own words. On a side note side you liked this movie Michael Dougherty also. Wrote an directed the movie Krampus 2015 these movies also take place in the same universe. Michael Dougherty confirmed it on the Shout/Scream Factory Collector's Edition of Krampus 2015 the naughty cut basically its the Directors cut of the movie. But if you see the theatrical release version the good cut if you will. The deleted scenes are on RUclips an they show they take place in the same universe.
