Honestly the whole frieza fight is absolutely what did it. It goes from 530k to 120M. It would have worked a lot better with smaller incremental increases. Since new villans need to be stronger than the last it just makes it so things scale ridiculously. Like The androids go from 320m in z to 40QT in super lol... Then new characters like kid trunks being 10x stronger in base than future trunks was at the start of cell saga and twice as strong as after training in the time chamber for a year.
When it went to God Ki making a true massive jump, that's when I feel like it got of hand. Before there was training which seem to work with the power the character got.
I disagree hard. In Buu saga, Goku though SSJ Gotenks would be enough to defeat Buu. That puts SSJ Gotenks at SSJ3 Goku level, more or less. Then Gotenks gained SSJ3, making him around 8x stronger than SSJ3 Goku. SNS Gohan was even stronger than SSJ3 Gotenks. Super Buu (stated as far stronger than SSJ3 Goku) absorbs Goten, Trunks, Piccolo and Gohan, and somehow Vegito is able to play with him in SSJ. I mean, come on, Goku was a SSJ3, Vegeta a mere SSJ2 and then they fuse and are THAT strong? Ok, they may be RiVaLs, but thats bullshit.
@Sornbur you have to remember that Gotenks didn't really get hurt but wasn't winning due to being more of a kid playing around instead of fighting and they have less fighting experience than the adults. The changes that Buu went through was also a change up to fighting ability. Sometimes it wasn't so much of power but ability of fighting.
Your forgetting King Kai stated to Goku that training under him was equivalent to training several thousand years on Earth and Goku was able to increase his power level via Ki manipulation using the Kaioken! Vegeta in his Great Ape form was already canonically stronger than Ginyu in terms of Power Level (his 18,000 base power level becomes 180,000 as a Great Ape due to the 10 times multiplier of Great Ape transformation, though Ginyu still has the advantage tactically thanks to his ability to swap bodies & Great Ape having a huge weakness in that it is lost if Vegeta's tail is removed! Still in terms of Power Level Great Ape Vegeta is superior to Ginyu's 120,000)! However Ginyu's power level is still impressive given it was achieved without a power up like the Kaioken or Transformations!
And that's why I stop caring about power leveling or I just go to YT and search everyone's power levels. Cuz thinking about everyone's power level makes my brain hurt.
At one point, they changed the system from power levels to plot armor. That's the only explanation I can come up with for the original Z fighters to be able to compete in the tournament of power after one month of training. (Imagine if they did that during the saiyan saga instead of waiting all this time) Eventually, Krillin is going to decide he needs to be strong again and then surpass Black Frieza's current power in another month of training.
I don’t think power levels were ever supposed to be a real thing. It was just to show how unreliable the scouting technology was and how dependent on it the Saiyans had become. So when they finally met someone who could increase their strength at will, the whole concept became meaningless. It never mattered.
No it devolved into that. Vegeta stating the scouters were meaningless didn’t negate the whole concept as the scouters were the most reliable piece of tech on Namek. They read Gohan and Krillins power levels correctly, Vegetas multiple times, Goku’s and they were the reason Moori destroying them meant Freezas army couldn’t find the rest of the Namekians. But power levels were ALSO the reason Vegeta could find them, Gohan and Krillin. People seem to think of power levels as just the numbers when they’re literally the ki level inside each person.

This means that in common case, it won't happen, unless the one being scanned is an adept at Ki Control. In Frieza's case, he limited himself with his forms until he gets to his final form. In Goku and others' case they just control their power so that it would be low or high to max whenever they needed it. This is what made PL as a concept useless. After Frieza saga, nobody even bother to use scouters nor improve those gadgets because of this. Other things that made PL as a concept never truly mattered is that this thing never put the scanned one's state as a variable in the equation. Whether it's about emotions, health, fatigue, or even techniques like Kaio Ken, those things affect PL. Making the PL changes according to situation and conditions. This always makes the scanning ones under/overestimate the ones they're scanning on their first meeting, turning the scouters into something inaccurate. Besides, it isn't like the one with lower PL would always be unable to beat the living shyte out of the higher one. One thing that should be considered is strategy. Also, Pseudo-UI used by Roshi could even make this thing obsolete.

I always wanted power levels to be deceiving, with some lower power level characters getting a win over a villain by fighting skill alone; but after the power level concealment (which makes no sense) and with scouters breaking all the time, power levels became more and more of a Frieza Force joke than anything. Dragonball Z has its moments of underdogs and competitive power level fights, like arguably Piccolo and A17, but overall in DBZ it's mostly power level eclipses, and it matters more than it likes to show (like there is no such thing in DBZ as someone with a high power level losing to someone with a low power level than theirs, fights in DBZ have always been consistent and clear as to who is stronger than who at important moments). The Tournament of Power threw power levels out the window. In fact, all of DBS did.
His power level is kind of irrelevant to be honest. My dude with his power was able to shake an entire realm with no space or time and fought and beat a dude using MUI that was stated to be beyond the fabric of time which is 4D. So Goku in actuality is on a level of infinity in terms of power level being at least 4th dimensional. I know it sounds absurd but its the truth. Like a good example of this explanation is take a person in a book being stated to have infinite power. That person is still inside the book which is a 2D existence. Their infinite 2D power would never be able to scratch a 3D real life person because people exist beyond the 2D reality. So the 2D being's infinite power means nothing to a real life person.
After Buu it stopped mattering in terms of Power Level. Even Vegeta kind of eluded to that in the manga where he mentions they'd already reached their peak and the only thing left to train was their discipline and mind. At the point they're at it's simply better to hone what they have because there's no need to find power beyond what they've achieved.
They allready didn't made sense in Dragon Ball. I mean remember that giant Stone Krilin and Goku had to move it was way above 40 tons but right before the Boo Saga Goku struggled with 8 tons and needed his Super Saiyan form for them.
In the DBS anime Goku Black went from slightly above Future Trunks to matching SSGSS Vegito in a few episodes. Then Future Trunks gets an attack that slices Merged Zamasu in half. In DBS characters close power gap super fast. In Especially if they are Saiyans. When I think about that it makes it harder to enjoy the story.

Actually, people could probably calculate power levels in real life. In the DB guide book, the multipliers for each ssj transformation are stated. You can take the base power level of, say, Goku and multiply it by said multipliers.
Honestly, once Power Levels that were in the *Millions* became considered *Weak,* is when "Measuring" Power Levels became obsolete in my opinion. 😆 Also, as a concept, I think being able to "Measure" Power Levels was *always* meant to be inaccurate - hence why Scouters were proven mis-informative during their *very introduction* when Raditz underestimated Goku & Piccolo (&Gohan) by misreading their Power Levels since they could raise it by focusing their Ki. I think the point was to show that Ki, a *Spiritual* Essence, can *never* be properly understood by Science/Technology. 🙂 Power Levels becoming *far* too absurdly high to being able to "Measure" is probably why they introduced the concept of being unable to Sense God Ki in DBS... That way, Characters *with* God Ki, like Beerus and Whis, and the Super Saiyan God/Blue/Rose Transformations *can't* be given a Canonical Numerical Power Level. 😆 P.S. You said there wouldn't be a Power Level over 1000 recorded in DB until Garlic Jr. In _The Dead Zone_ Movie, followed by Piccolo and Gohan during the Fight with Raditz, but what about Raditz himself? He's stated to have a Power Lever of 1200+, so he would be the next one after Garlic Jr. And, this is just my opinion, considering Goku & Piccolo together were enough to Defeat Garlic Jr. (He only didn't die due to Immortality), I *highly* doubt Garlic Jr.'s Power Lever is over 1000. 🙂

I think it got out of hand with the android saga. After the point of watching everyone get dominated by Frieza, who was an alien emperor with an army under his command, we then get modified human bodies created by a human that somehow were able to match the power of a super saiyan that was able to overpower a full powered final form alien emperor, all by using earth made human technology
I never understood this mechanic as is just arbitrary numbers thrown about with zero tangible context to their meaning. It just became a cliche cycle like one of those bad Superman comics from the 50s.
After namek it was difficult to follow for me. When levels go from a few million up to a couple hundred million it starts to confuse me a little. The Cell saga I could sort of follow but the Buu saga I gave up. Then with Super I had to unscrew my cranium, take out my brain to see what was wrong with it only to find my brain was deep fried and had gone smooth and sticky. So I got a brain replacement and I just try not to turn my brain on when watching Super else it starts to sizzle and smoke a little bit, going smooth in the process. And as we know: A wrinkly brain is a healthy brain... or whatever my aunt says to me.
Garlic jrs own guide makes no sense. It puts his henchmen above weighted Goku and Piccolo. Guess who killed his henchmen and very easily? Weighted Goku and Piccolo with Goku even 2v1’ing them. Plus Goku and Piccolo did better, and I mean way better against Garlic jr than Raditz and yet Raditz is supposed to be weaker via the mangas stated power levels. If that’s where your info came from it’s directly contradicted by what’s actually shown. Just like how the Daizenshuu lists Nappa as 4,000 when he’s clearly closer to 8,000 having given Goku an even fight after powering up/calming down. Lastly, Garlic jr’s not canon so the first official power level we see over 1,000 via statements is in fact Piccolos first SBC attempt.
The movie timeline scales higher than the canon timeline. In Tree of Might, Goku’s power was 30,000. How can that be when it was only 8,000 in the Saiyan Saga? And don’t get me started on Broly lol

To me it's actually the Androids. Think about it Freeza was an intergalatic Emperor, so it makes sense that he'd be strong. However no one knew of earth, so Dr. Jeroe wouldn't have known of Freeza until the return from Namek. Meaning in 3 years he somehow managed to make droids that embarrassed power levels of the previous strongest in the universe aside from gods. That was just silly.
I had a DBZ book long time ago I might still have it in storage but I remember it said Toriyama said Goku was at 300,000 when he fought Freeza before he turned Super Saiyan then he was 15,000,000 and Freeza was at 12,000,000 at max power.
Power levels were intentionally bullshit when they were introduced - they were a thing solely to be proven wrong. Ignoring that for a hot second, the battle with Frieza was probably where it really really got out of hand. The sheer power boost from that arc put everyone not involved in it too far behind, and the only threats that could come up had to at least be a contender for super saiyan to be considered a threat. Anyone who wasn't a super saiyan was dead weight, which completely goes against the strategies and martial arts that had carried much of the series up to that point. If Frieza ended the series, I'd be much more fine with that - reaching insane levels in a climactic battle to the death sounds hype, but the sheer power boost from Frieza set a precedent and it kept getting more insane from there with each arc after.
It never made sense to me how Frieza and Goku fighting would threaten the giant planet Namek, but then earth is relatively durable during future fights. Once we get to the Buu saga, wouldn’t the blast from a basic punch created enough percussive pressure to vaporize matter for miles? Energy blasts at that level should turn everything into glass. Then you get to super where they can destroy galaxies and how are they supposed to have a sparring match? How do humans keep up? Makes no sense unless you just stop caring and commit to having fun, in which case, do we need to exhaustively analyze powers levels?

In DBS characters close power gap super fast. In Especially if they are Saiyans. When I think about that it makes it harder to enjoy the story.

Actually, people could probably calculate power levels in real life. In the DB guide book, the multipliers for each ssj transformation are stated. You can take the base power level of, say, Goku and multiply it by said multipliers.
Honestly, once Power Levels that were in the *Millions* became considered *Weak,* is when "Measuring" Power Levels became obsolete in my opinion. 😆
Also, as a concept, I think being able to "Measure" Power Levels was *always* meant to be inaccurate - hence why Scouters were proven mis-informative during their *very introduction* when Raditz underestimated Goku & Piccolo (&Gohan) by misreading their Power Levels since they could raise it by focusing their Ki. I think the point was to show that Ki, a *Spiritual* Essence, can *never* be properly understood by Science/Technology. 🙂
Power Levels becoming *far* too absurdly high to being able to "Measure" is probably why they introduced the concept of being unable to Sense God Ki in DBS... That way, Characters *with* God Ki, like Beerus and Whis, and the Super Saiyan God/Blue/Rose Transformations *can't* be given a Canonical Numerical Power Level. 😆
P.S. You said there wouldn't be a Power Level over 1000 recorded in DB until Garlic Jr. In _The Dead Zone_ Movie, followed by Piccolo and Gohan during the Fight with Raditz, but what about Raditz himself? He's stated to have a Power Lever of 1200+, so he would be the next one after Garlic Jr. And, this is just my opinion, considering Goku & Piccolo together were enough to Defeat Garlic Jr. (He only didn't die due to Immortality), I *highly* doubt Garlic Jr.'s Power Lever is over 1000. 🙂

After the point of watching everyone get dominated by Frieza, who was an alien emperor with an army under his command, we then get modified human bodies created by a human that somehow were able to match the power of a super saiyan that was able to overpower a full powered final form alien emperor, all by using earth made human technology

I never understood this mechanic as is just arbitrary numbers thrown about with zero tangible context to their meaning. It just became a cliche cycle like one of those bad Superman comics from the 50s.
After namek it was difficult to follow for me. When levels go from a few million up to a couple hundred million it starts to confuse me a little. The Cell saga I could sort of follow but the Buu saga I gave up.
Then with Super I had to unscrew my cranium, take out my brain to see what was wrong with it only to find my brain was deep fried and had gone smooth and sticky. So I got a brain replacement and I just try not to turn my brain on when watching Super else it starts to sizzle and smoke a little bit, going smooth in the process. And as we know: A wrinkly brain is a healthy brain... or whatever my aunt says to me.

Garlic jrs own guide makes no sense. It puts his henchmen above weighted Goku and Piccolo. Guess who killed his henchmen and very easily? Weighted Goku and Piccolo with Goku even 2v1’ing them. Plus Goku and Piccolo did better, and I mean way better against Garlic jr than Raditz and yet Raditz is supposed to be weaker via the mangas stated power levels. If that’s where your info came from it’s directly contradicted by what’s actually shown. Just like how the Daizenshuu lists Nappa as 4,000 when he’s clearly closer to 8,000 having given Goku an even fight after powering up/calming down.
Lastly, Garlic jr’s not canon so the first official power level we see over 1,000 via statements is in fact Piccolos first SBC attempt.
The movie timeline scales higher than the canon timeline. In Tree of Might, Goku’s power was 30,000. How can that be when it was only 8,000 in the Saiyan Saga? And don’t get me started on Broly lol

To me it's actually the Androids. Think about it Freeza was an intergalatic Emperor, so it makes sense that he'd be strong. However no one knew of earth, so Dr. Jeroe wouldn't have known of Freeza until the return from Namek. Meaning in 3 years he somehow managed to make droids that embarrassed power levels of the previous strongest in the universe aside from gods. That was just silly.
I had a DBZ book long time ago I might still have it in storage but I remember it said Toriyama said Goku was at 300,000 when he fought Freeza before he turned Super Saiyan then he was 15,000,000 and Freeza was at 12,000,000 at max power.
Goku was at 3 million. Super Saiyan brought him to 150,000,000 vs Frieza at 120,000,000.
The most recent one I can remember is golden frieza had around 800 quintillion in the forms reveal

Namek was definitely when it got out of hand. But that's ok because it was suppossed to be the final saga.
Power levels were intentionally bullshit when they were introduced - they were a thing solely to be proven wrong.
Ignoring that for a hot second, the battle with Frieza was probably where it really really got out of hand. The sheer power boost from that arc put everyone not involved in it too far behind, and the only threats that could come up had to at least be a contender for super saiyan to be considered a threat. Anyone who wasn't a super saiyan was dead weight, which completely goes against the strategies and martial arts that had carried much of the series up to that point.
If Frieza ended the series, I'd be much more fine with that - reaching insane levels in a climactic battle to the death sounds hype, but the sheer power boost from Frieza set a precedent and it kept getting more insane from there with each arc after.

It never made sense to me how Frieza and Goku fighting would threaten the giant planet Namek, but then earth is relatively durable during future fights. Once we get to the Buu saga, wouldn’t the blast from a basic punch created enough percussive pressure to vaporize matter for miles? Energy blasts at that level should turn everything into glass. Then you get to super where they can destroy galaxies and how are they supposed to have a sparring match?
How do humans keep up? Makes no sense unless you just stop caring and commit to having fun, in which case, do we need to exhaustively analyze powers levels?
