    Thanks for the great videos, can't wait for part 3. It occurred to me that the two items you showed in part one designed to dump power and convert to heat during high winds could be made use of in the winter if mounted cleverly. Then, in addition to the 400 watts of electricity, you would also get the many additional watts that are only available as heat. As a side note, I find that the sunbeam waterproof mattress heaters on berths are the best option for any attempt to heat electrically offshore. Works like a charm for me anyway.

    Drake, if you ever get to the south coast of England, hit me up, not only will I buy you and your crew dinner - I owe you at least that for the pleasure your videos have given me over the years - but I will also give you some proper cable strippers. As an electrician, watching you strip those cables was very disturbing, and I would rather you didn't do yourself damage! Thanks for all the great videos, I look forward to the next season.

    It looks like a nice unit but it seems to have a high price, I want your deal! Glad you didnt drop it when installing. Next time do a leash. Thanks for the vid.

    nice install, only thing extra i would have done was to fill the terminals in the terminal block with dielectric grease before inserting the wires. helps fill the airspace so if water does get in, it won't wick into the copper strands. even though you taped it, it was 2 separate wires so there is still an unsealed gap between the wires. think of it as electrical bedding compound.

    I really liked the video, very interesting.
    You really sound use safety glasses when using a drill, especially when you were drilling into the stainless steel - it only takes very small flake of metal to go blind and safety glasses are pretty cheap for a good pair.

    Great video. Lucky the overhead was too low to install the tail in the salon. The completed unit looks too big to get thru the companion way into the cockpit. That’s something I would have done, then kicked myself for not checking first. 🤙

    Some people always look for the difficult method. Examples: drilling the support holes instead of climbing afterwards, installing the nose cone before climbing, using the proper cable harness to support the cables, (the eye ring idea is a good one) put the metal plate on and secure it with the first bolt and nut thereby foregoing the tape. It is okay to overlook these on a practice run but when you post to final video, check your methods first. How do I know this? Experience ! LOL

    Been thinking about one of these, space is very limited on my 66 gladiator 24'...depending on how I mount, I could get 3-4 good sized solar panels, and have been wondering how much something like a wind gen wluld compliment a 200w solar setup...Im 2-3 years from casting off so plenty of time to research

    Great video as usual. Thanks a lot for showing us the whole mounting of the head unit I had no idea they were actually that big. I've never seen one up close with someone next to it to gauge it's actual size and the weight was a surprise. I saw some movement of the mast when you mounted the unit. Does this unit weigh a lot more than the original one?
    Can't wait to see the next step.
    Again, thank you for sharing.
    Cheers

      The stainless steel shaft base with the wires coming out of it (and the tower liner) stay stationary as the wind generator body rotates. So the wires don't rotate inside the pole at all. Take a look at this part of the installation video -> ruclips.net/video/E6xypfntBa0/видео.html.

    Well, I am certainly happy for You that You had calm seas. Hahaha Yeah, there are lot´s of things that can fall in the water and get lost forever.
    There are two things at this point I would like to know more. I would have liked to take a look at the quality of the slip rings under the black cover of the housing. And second... how long in is wire and what wire gauge did You choose ?
    Well, maybe You have the chance in Your next vid when You install the controller.
    Thanks, I enjoy Your video series.It´s about time that somebody on YT shows a realistic set up of a wind turbine on a boat and the things envolved. Can´t wait to see the D400 in action with real life data. I am sooooo!!!! tired of manufacturers trying to sell me a spec sheet and telling me what there wind turbine can do for the $$$$$. So let´s find out how much amps the D400 will put in the battery. I hope You will not disappoint me and show with lot´s of detail. I believe You should get best results since the cold winds up north bite a lot better on the blades...
    To take it a little further and inspire You for content of videos. I think it would be interesting to compare Your general energy situation in the northern hemispheres to be able to compare with warmer climates like the Caribbeans that require a lot of cooling like fridge and AC.
    Cheers

    We are having trouble sliding our D400 blades onto the rotor bushing. Not able to start the blade housing with the aluminum ring side first onto the black bushing. When I measure the diameters, the black bushing is 45 mm as is the front of the blades assembly. BUT, the aft edge of the the rotor assembly is smaller diameter, almost 1 mm less, making it impossible to tap on. Has anyone had this issue and have you got a solution?
    Thanks,

      New season should be out pretty soon. I think these wind turbine videos are part of a pre arranged agreement between Drake and the providers of the turbine. Also if you hadn't realised all the footage being shown is a couple years old so they take their time in editing and uploading videos. It sucks but Drake Paragon is the best sailing vlog imo so it's worth the wait

      Tibor Kiss. As near as I can determine, they film a whole bunch of video and store the video. Then when they overlay for the winter somewhere, the editing of the videos starts and a new season begins. If you pay attention to the dates within the video and the dates the videos are released it looks like it is a 1.5 to 2 year delay (I stand to be corrected if this is not accurate)

    What size electrical cable do you use to carry the current ( 12 volt ) from the wind turbine into the battery set up .Anyone give any advice please !

    • @drakeParagon
      @drakeParagon  3 года назад

      That depends on how long the cable run is between the turbine and the regulator.
      From the manual:
      Connecting cables between the D400 and the battery bank or inverter should be
      appropriately sized to minimise transmission losses. ...it is advisable to keep cable runs as short as possible
      and be prepared to use heavier gauge cable for longer runs.
      Suggested cable conductor cross-sectional areas for a 12 volt machine would be:
      0 - 10 metres cable -> 6 - 8 mm²
      10 - 20 metres cable -> 10 - 16 mm²
      20 - 30 metres cable -> 20 - 25 mm²
      If you’re not sure, I’d try calling and emailing Eclectic Energy directly.

    • @djangorheinhardt
      @djangorheinhardt 3 года назад

      Thankyou so much for replying so quickly.The cable you are using,is that 25 mm .The current will have to travel quite a few mtrs to the regulator so I take it that the thicker the better.I have got a Nauticat ketchup so I am having to build a stainless steel apparatus at the stern to get the turbine clear of the mizzen boom and sail so that increases the distance the juice has to travel .

    Is it significantly quieter than the Air X?

    • @drakeParagon
      @drakeParagon  6 лет назад +2

      Absolutely. Our D400 is way way quieter than our Air X marine was. The D400 is unbelievably quiet.

    • @mavrk2369
      @mavrk2369 6 лет назад +1

      Thanks for the Quick reply Paragon. That's good news! Seems very heavy probably because it has heaving well made wingdings. Any negatives noticed regarding the weight?

    • @marzsit9833
      @marzsit9833 6 лет назад +1

      the air x is noisy because it has very powerful magnets and a compact rotor/stator arrangement. this is mechanically and electrically efficient but produces a lot of vibration due to the 'cogging' effect that magnetos have. the d400 is larger in diameter so i'm guessing it has less powerful magnets but a larger, heavier stator winding which results in less vibration, which means less noise. so, it sacrifices a little bit of efficiency for peace and quiet....

  • @SpiritBear12
    @SpiritBear12 6 лет назад

    What is that little tether on the back of the fin to the pole for?

    • @marzsit9833
      @marzsit9833 6 лет назад +2

      if you need to do any work on the wiring, you have to be able to stop the turbine from rotating. the tether allows you to pull the turbine 90 degrees to the wind so it stops turning, then you loop the tether around a propeller blade to lock it.
