    Thank you for calling out the lack of challenge against Antisemitism. It's been a real challenge over the last few years (especially the last few weeks/months) with Antisemitism, Jews place in left wing politics, all that stuff. When you mentioned that WWII is completely glossed over in this book I physically cringed and braced myself for extra bs and inevitably came.
    It's something I've been thinking about a lot, as a Jew, my placement among the racial divides in society. In the end I'm white when it's convenient and a minority POC when it's convenient.
    If you do an (expanded) episode on Antisemitism, the fluidity of racial divides, any of that stuff, I would love to talk with you and give you some of my experiences/perspective on the subject if you need more research/insight. I'm not an academic on this sort of stuff, but it's definitely something I've been thinking about pretty much all my life.
    Also, this all ties in to a question I've been having for a while regarding intersectionality and whiteness, mainly that we can all agree that there isn't such a thing as a white "race" that white supremacists call for. Most of the time its an amalgamation of greek, roman, and other European cultures mushed together, so say nothing of how Irish and Italian people were once not considered white. And yet, much of the language surrounding intersectionality and social justice revolves around "whiteness" as if it were a more concrete race like "Black" and "Asian". Race is a societal construct, sure, and its useful to use these sorts of categories to be able to point out patterns and types of oppression to these arbitrary constructs, but its a bit odd especially when it comes to (surprised) us Jews who are simultaneously white, colonial capitalists and degenerate neo-Marxist scum.

      Actually whites and other races, genetically speaking cluster extremely well with people of the same race in the US. Also, Italians and Irish were allowed to enter the us at a time when America had a whites only immigration policy. Sounds like a bit more research is warranted on your end

    Hi Olly! You said in the video the you enjoy books about race that have a historical perspective so I think you will enjoy this one, It is called Black Feminist Archaeology by Whitney Battle-Baptiste. It's more geared towards archaeologists as the title points out but it gives a really interesting insight on how standard historical discourse is racist and in what ways can we change it. Another book that I'd like to recommend is The Invention of Africa. Gnosis, Philosophy, and the Order of Knowledge by Valentin-Yves Mudimbe, it's quite complicated, in my opinion, but it's a nice analysis of philosophy and epistemology through the lenses of an African philosopher who wants to produce a new order of knowledge. If you read them, I hope you like them.

    • @Rynewulf
      @Rynewulf 6 лет назад

      I'm curious since I don't hear about this much. Could you point out in what ways current historical discourse is still racist? I can easily understand how it was several decades ago (when assumptions about 'tribal' peoples and 'civilisation' informed most discussions about anything outside of ancient Greece/Rome and post-renaissance Europe, especially when using those examples as comparative baselines for everything else. Like when in the 1800's they assumed the Benin bronzes were secretly renaissance Italian but these days historians seem pretty happy to celebrate them as highly technically and aesthetically impressive examples of West African culture) but at least from what I tend to see here in the UK is normally pretty good with discussing a wide range of historical events, periods, places and perspectives without making weird or insulting generalisations or assumptions (I highlight the normally though. I've seen some weird stuff get onto tv or made into documentaries before). So I'm pretty keen to hear about the state of things if you've got the time, since I haven't exactly heard much about this

    • @matheusmota1741
      @matheusmota1741 6 лет назад +6

      Most of what she points out in the book comes down to what we call a historical fact and what are the sources that we use to interpret the materiality of the past. One of the examples that she gives is that when archaeologists go to analyse archaeological sites of enslave black people in the US most of the scholars and the workforce is composed of white people who look at the site from a distance and therefore need written sources to try and understand how alien the experience of those enslaved is to them. She points that since the tradition of the black people who lived on those sites in the past was mostly based on conversation and storytelling instead of writing. So when white archaeologists uses written sources to interpret the material remais of black people with an oral tradition they are using the point of view of white people who wrote in the past about those black people (who were not seen as people). She thinks that that use of os "white sources" produce a historical discourse that alienates black people of the present from their past and therefore is quite racist. That's just one example but the book is full of her personal experiencies of racism in archaeology and historical discourse in general.

    The title of this book makes me uncomfortable. Either I'm meant to take it at face value, in which case I'm not invited to the conversation, or there's deeper context which demands further explanation. I was really hoping to find said explanation here, because I cannot in good conscience put this book on my already-too-long "to-read" list without it.

      Interesting. Yeah, she seems to be specifically aiming this book towards white people so why the title? If she wanted to aim it towards poc, fair enough, but the title really doesn't make any sense at all. She risks alienating people who are genuinely interested and only appealing to the self hating types. Self hatred is seldom constructive anyway tbh. Being paralysed by guilt or shame often gets in the wau of looking towards genuine change and progress.

    I think one of the reasons you didn't see Nick Griffin get challenged on his antisemitism in a book that is predominantly about anti-racist philosophy as it pertains most specifically to the Black/White relationship as told from the perspective of a black woman is because Jews are often times perceived as just another group of whites. The fact remains that the Jewish history of oppression is almost wholly orthogonal to the history of black oppression, and is not at the center of intersectional social justice movements in the West at this time. I can't help but feel like this oversight is going to come back and bite us later, but for now it makes sense to focus on groups whose history of oppression has gone unaddressed, or at least not fully addressed. Cheers.

    • @shlomosilversteinberg5785
      @shlomosilversteinberg5785 6 лет назад +7

      Any focus away from black oppression is ultimately harmful to stopping anti-black racism. A white saying "No, include me into the conversation!" is harmful, and it only makes sense that a Jew trying to do the same is harmful. My recommendation is that since you're Jewish, pass off as white, and even have a higher average income than whites in America, is to not implant yourself into these conversations. All you're doing is appropriating anti-racism. My ancestry is Irish, so my ancestors had a long history of oppression, especially since my ancestry moved to the US much later than most Irish. But, that doesn't mean I'm going to weigh my history of oppression against POC, that's insanely fucking disgusting behavior and you should be ashamed for doing that.

    • @siginotmylastname3969
      @siginotmylastname3969 6 лет назад +12

      Lorem Ipsum the way anti semitism functions doesn't work like that though, also there are still many Jews living in poverty and to make out like their wealth is connected to their ethnicity and religion as opposed to class privilege, is kind of how anti semitism works. You're not Jewish, your experience is not the same. Plus I've seen many discussions on anti semitism which acknowledge that white passing Jews are given a sort of conditional privilege which, while not the same as white privilege, means it's important to connect this to people of colour and the oppression they face. It's not "butting in" because the two experiences are very much linked in the perspective of the far right.

    • @shlomosilversteinberg5785
      @shlomosilversteinberg5785 6 лет назад +2

      Well, there exists rich blacks, so POC aren't oppressed. That's your argument, basically. Less than 10% of black households make $100,000+ a year or more, yet a little under 45% of Jewish households make $100,000+ a year or more. Furthermore, to take your argument to even more extremes, you'd be arguing that whites actually aren't at all bad because many of us are living in poverty.
      Most people consider Jews to be white, therefore they have white privilege. It's truly disgusting how much you're willing to bend your social justice principles in order to deny this. I'm not going to let Jews speak for POC, especially when it's about privilege. Definitely not if white people cannot.

      Any of them? I suppose I expected more from a "book chat" on a widely celebrated item than a list of topics and a blanket recommendation. But perhaps that's enough for a book that intends to be introductory -- i.e., that repeats in a clear and catchy style a central set of ideas/perspectives within a field (in this case, anti-racism). Those books are always welcome.
      Again, there's nothing wrong with recommendations or a list of a book's topics; I just wanted more PT-style "chat." (Or to put it another way, I was hoping for the review I wish you had written as opposed to the one you did write. It's a hard pitfall to avoid.)

      I know you posted this a while back, but if anyone else was wondering, it sounds to me like an accent from the Home Counties or other parts of South England. These areas are generally more affluent and talk in the voice I would normally call a "BBC Accent". As you say, it's usually more of an indicator of class than area though which is a real shame that it is considered more "intelligent" because it excludes so many other intelligent, erudite people from different backgrounds; and is in all-honesty yet another class barrier. Even the fact it's often referred to as a "BBC Accent" shows you just how little socioeconomic diversity there is in the media. It's pleasing to the ear, but so are many other accents which I wish we could hear more in academic circles! But all that aside, hope you're enjoying your new life here, Crazy WoolLady!

I sometimes feel stuck between two worlds, with some POCs telling me I'm automatically racist and privileged for being white despite being from a poor "2nd world" Eastern European country, and far-righters telling me I'm a "useless leech" for being a foreign student or that "slavs aren't even white".
    I'm not saying people aren't facing any real issues, but in their struggle they often become ignorant of others' struggles.
    I feel like egalitarianism is the way to go and it has worked out fine for me so far.

      Myrse Valentine listen I know this may sound like a cliche but why don't you change that. The reason why it is Western Center is because the people that are mostly speaking about the issue or westerners. Prejudice in Injustice live in every single country in this world but every single country does necessarily you have a platform or the ability to speak. If you feel strongly about this then don't get tired starting a conversation. Ultimately, there's room for everyone to talk about their perspective and Enlighten everyone to their circumstance but what I was suggesting is not to view it as a negative thing.

      The problem is you have no control over how you present. If you live in a western developed nation and you present as white, you will automatically benefit from white privilege. I don't think anybody is saying this is your fault, it is just something to be aware of. Nobody is going to know you are from a so called 2nd world poor country simply by looking at you. But as a black person, the connotation of poverty, crime and all manner of aweful things is embedded in your skin before you have even opened your mouth. There are even some POC's who pass for white and spend their lives benefiting from white privilege. I have an aunt who has a black African father and a white mother and she looks like an average white woman, therefore the kind of life experience she had was very different from my own.

      Angie Speaks well said, Angie. Saying someone has privilege is not an accusation, it is merely an observation of how others perceive you and treat you differently and I think a proper understanding of that concept is a good starting point for white people to recognize inequality when it happens in front of us. I think it can be hard to have nuanced conversations about this topic on twitter.

      I don't know about the "White Privilege" because there is now law that says what white and not white people can do. What people perceive as white privilege is I think the ignorance about the qualities of other ethnic groups (with different amount of melanin), which are more or less the same as of white people. I'm an Eastern European , and I can say that if there is this supposed white privilege I might somehow enjoy it until I show my ID, then you see a little bit of reserve... Other people are not lucky because after they open their mouth, you know where does she/he comes from...

    Does the author clarify the concept of whiteness? Or is that something we have to infer as the concept accepted in British/American society? I say this because there are different concepts of whiteness depending on the culture.

      She speaks more about the concept of "Whiteness" from the black perspective. Black people constantly have to view themselves through the white gaze so it is always funny to see the backlash when white people are made to view "whiteness" through the gaze of the other.

Maybe a dose of historically anchored pragmatism could speak to some of the recurring conflicts within the parts of current antagonistic paradigm?

      Let me as a "white-Arabian" (German-Syrian) person put it like this. Being put off by the title isn't inherently racist because of the following reasons:
      1) Context matters. If a white person isn't aware of the book's context, it is perfectly reasonable that they aren't going to read a book, whose title demonizes them.
      2) Why should we promote a clickbait title like that? If I understand the synopsis of the book's content properly, the title and the content don't fit together. That makes the author look dishonest or deceiving, regardless of her intentions.
      3) Why should I or anyone else support a double standard? If she or anyone else had published a book with the title "Why I no longer talk to [insert minority here] about race", a government institution would have pulled it from the shelves immediately.

    I'm so happy with how I was born and raised in Eastern Europe. I literally don't know what is racism and feminism. We have some biological sex discrimination around nowadays, but my parents were well-developed soviet citizens. That is my father worked full-time, my mother worked full-time and they were able to more or less equally fulfill themselves in professional career and hobbies never facing any discrimination. Like technocratic approach dominated over everything else during their lives. Same surprisingly applies to my grandparents. My grandmother held a leading position equivalent to current C-level job 50+ years ago. And I can say all the same about my wife's family. Now the situation is much worse. We are both Masters of Science, but my wife have to spend lots of time with kids due to relatively bad social support (bad schools and kindergarten, healthcare etc. results in extra time costs for kids and their logistics). My wife's care about our kids became her full-time job and I do all the same during weekends. So either my wife or myself can't do career and can't spent that much time on hobbies my parents did. Eventually, I believe, we are going to end up in patriarchal society which looks f*cking ridiculous taking into account our parents' histories. Kind of degradation. As for racism. I believe this is mostly a social construct for slavery / colonialism justification. Completely alien thing for me and for people around me.

    Speaking of things you don't hear about. I only just found out that the Chernobyl Disaster in 1986 could have been a whole lot worse than it was if certain action wasn't taken in time. As it turns out. After the initial explosion. There was just hours to get rid of all the water that had accumiliated in the basement under the molten reactor that was melting through the floor above. If the molten reactor material had made contact with the water there would have been a 3 to 5 Megaton blast - over a hundred times more powerful than Hiroshima. I can't quite believe it. It's official information - even the BBC said the same ("the whole site would have been vapourized in the blast"). As it would have been a ground blast rather than an air blast (like from a nulcear weapon) the nuclear fallout would have been absolutely terrible - I think potentially the whole of Europe and equivelant surrounding area east and south would had to have been evacuated. Why didn't anyone tell me!? ffs

If I dedicated all of my content (writing, YT videos, speeches) to speaking on racism and race then I would hope that the person who is asking is inquiring would have familiarized themselves with my work rather than expect me to rehash my countless hours of work in a single conversation with one person. I haven’t read the book though so I could be wrong.

    Just came across your channel due to it appearing in my recommendations, and I must say that I'm impressed. Your book chat was very interesting, and quite telling. Your review(?) was balanced and you made it clear you enjoyed the book despite its flaws. But it's those flaws that I find troubling.
    Reni Eddo-Lodge obviously wanted to keep the focus of her book on "white" rather than anything else, so from that perspective I get it. However, as a result of delving into other territories, she opened up the discussion beyond the book title. This expansion required the author to be more complete. This makes her omissions more glaring, and makes her and the book less credible.
    It's simply impossible to discuss modern history without discussing World War II. Since black soldiers faced heavy discrimination, it makes it even more ridiculous to ignore. It's like discussing Abraham Lincoln without referencing the Emancipation Proclamation. Of course, her decision to do this becomes more apparent when combined with giving free reign to an extremist politician.
    Nick Griffin has the right to speak freely, and Eddo-Lodge has the same right to challenge or not challenge a given person, but that's also irrelevant. What IS relevant, is that despite the two seemingly having nothing in common, when you look just a bit deeper, it's obvious that they do share at least one thing. That's a shame, she squandered an opportunity to keep an important discussion focused squarely on what she wanted. If there's any doubt of this, one has to read no further than the comments section on this very thread. Her message may not be diluted for everyone, but for me (and others, obviously), it changes it dramatically.

    What annoys me about people like Philosophy Tube is not that I think he's necessarily "wrong", I really don't have sufficient motivation to gest into stuff like the philosophy of racial issues to the point where I'd be equipped to argue for or against him on the level he's at. What annoys me is how strangely out of touch he and so many left-leaning/socially progressive tend to sound. I think that to most people, even just a title like "Why I'm No Longer Talking to White People About Race" is likely to be perceived as blatantly and unjustifiably racially prejudiced and condescending. I don't think most people are going to be charitably disposed to what you're saying if it seems to challenge them, it creates a temptation to jump at any opportunity to dismiss you if one hasn't already. Which is why I don't think the way PT talks about this kind of stuff is very helpful, the philosophical style and even just terms like "whiteness" is likely to sound pretentious at best, like gibberish if you're lucky, and offensive at worst.
    I personally believe that extremely important factors when it comes to creating understanding and discourse is to make your opponent feel respected, safe, and understood. Draw them in. Entertain them. Establish common ground. Find ways in which you can meet them, make them feel like there's understanding. Consider always that humans are stubborn, lazy and petty, and will dismiss people who express opinions that are challenging or perceived as being from the out-group if you give them a chance. Demonstrate that you understand them, that you get it, I think they're more likely to consider your perspective if they feel you understand theirs. Make sure you acknowledge the things about your own perspective that others are turned off by, adress not only the fundamental disagreement, but the petty things, like the buzzwords, the in-group terms, all the things that can alienate other people and make you sound obscure and pretentious.
    The only left-leaning person I've come across(granted, that isn't actually saying that much) who seems to have an appreciation for these kinds of tactics is ContraPoints, but she's not perfect at it, and I think her drift towards stronger left/progressive stances means she's more likely to alienate people that she used to be.
    Somewhat counter-intuitively, I think that even the extreme ends of ideologies can often benefit more from moderate allies than die-hard puritans, because people who are more accessible serve as a better ideological gateway to draw people into the ideology, some of whom will eventually reach even the fringes. I'd think the left would have figured this out better, considering they're quick to spot the harm done by crypto-fascists or those who unwittingly spread talking-points that provide the ground-work for fascist recruitment.

About individual, structural racism or only stories related to racism? Who is the author? How is the title meant? (I'm pretty sure that its just to be controversial)
      Do we need to accept the concept of whiteness to agree to the book? Is there black ignorance too besides to white ignorance or isn't it, because it follows the logic behind "Black people can't be racist". I would have love to know from this book chat.

      Thank you for your first two paragraphs. Is the third one only explaining the content of the book or did you try to explain it to me with your own terms?

      Technocracy I don't know what kind of history you got at school but that was never my experience in Scotland. I learnt social history which isn't the same as rambling off the great achievements across time. It was based on how the individual citizens at the time were effected by important moments in time. It was bleak, but it was real, as was modern studies and even in RME. And the same went for when I went to study sociology at university where we were taught by lecturers of all creeds and ethnicities. The term 'race' was a subject within itself and has its own philosophical debates.
      So I'm presuming that the Scottish education system is more in touch with societal issues with people of all backgrounds than elsewhere?

      I don't think he means his videos to be activism, and I don't think he's attempting to engage with anyone except his audience and people who might want to join his audience. Note the word 'audience' not 'movement'. He's making a youtube channel not Contributing To The Discourse, and that's his right.

    Here is a suggestion: why don't you critique the racists that you know or "don't know", hate groups, etc. That would get the ball rolling a lot faster than anything we could do as victims of racism. Instead you spent a huge chunk about the topic you wished she could have done better on. That's why smart people would not engage and should not. It's masturbate with no payoff

    What is an anti-semitic dogwhistle?

    • @alchemicpunk1509

      Antisemitism disguised in harmless words so only those in the know recognize it. Whenever you hear, giving an extreme example here, someone like Alex Jones yell about the evil "Globalists" what he's parroting or deliberately doing is using a dogwhistle meant as "the Jewish Cabal". Which, to be clear, does not exist.

    The history side in the book provides a really poor argument - Really eager to point of the British empire but yet says nothing about say the ottoman empire which started slavery from Africa way before European powers and kept it going well after the British made it illegal.

    No need of a response, challenge to the speech of nick griffing as all the book is a critics of it. And the introduction of the chapter state clearcly that the griffin's view is madnedss.
    Maybe there is nothing about the ww2 because a part of history more or even well known and/or because during ww2 the acts of black folks was not so different from the whites (all against the nazi). Anyway it didn't bother me as i have'nt notice it because the history part is on what we don't know about fight against racism in uk by english black people

    How are we meant to fix racial tensions when white people aren't allowed to take part in the conversation? How are we meant to heal society when the willingness for dialogue is completely ignored? With a title like that, I don't think this book will be helping to ease racial tension in the UK at all.

      Citzby white People always want shit easy for them lol “ease tensions” so yall can talk about race more easily? That aren’t going to solve anything. Watch the video, read the book and start educating yourself on problems you have very little knowledge of. White folks always want a conversation when they know nothing but act like the genius in the room.

      Yes, it is. Tensions go down when people don't feel they have to walk on eggshells.

      Citzby You are allowed to take part in the conversation. Don't let the authoritarian left tell you what you can and cannot discuss. We have free speech in this country (America at least) for a reason. It is, however, much more ideal that you have extensive knowledge in what you are speaking about so that you aren't shown up for ignorance.

      The author literally wrote this book so she wouldn't have to take part in the same intro-level conversations over and over again, and nobody is preventing anybody from reading it.
