FYI, a little tip from an old ASE wrench, when you put your 10 mm socket on the extension, put a small piece of duct tape around the socket and extension to make sure it doesn't come off when you pull it out from that hole in the door. Use a magnetic socket, and you don't need to use a deep socket either. Believe me this'll save you every time. The cost of the duct tape is cheaper than the time you're gonna spend trying to fish out that socket from the deep abyss in the bottom of your door. I swear to god, just today I fricken found TWO sockets in the bottom of the door of my old 1994 Sonoma! I was taught by an A&P mechanic when I was 15 years old, that a real Mechanic, who works on aircraft and power plants, a good mechanic, never drops his tools.😅😅😂
I didn't change the ignition key, I had the new key cylinder matched to the original key by a locksmith (I think i mentioned that in the video) although in hindsight it isn't actually that hard to set up the key cylinder yourself
Just had the 2001 s10 broken into yesterday. After the police report and seeing what was missing-just didn't know where to begin.. So thank you for this vid, gives a guy a chance at solving the problem solo! Cheers and great work man!
No problem! You can also program the cylinder yourself (instead of paying a locksmith to do it) if you are being extra ambitious and frugal. The OEM cylinder comes with directions on how to do it. I didn't realize this and paid a locksmith $30 to program the cylinder. When they tried to break into my vehicle they were not able to get through the cylinder and gave up without getting inside.
I just went through this procedure a couple days ago you could reprogram the key yourself go to a junkyard take the cylinders out of a S-10 Sonoma or a Isuzu hombre , disassemble the cylinder and take the tumblers out they are numbered take your cylinder that’s in the vehicle or on the passenger side and find out what number tumblers you have in yours original cylinder and then switch it up with a new one this procedure will work on most GM vehicles
@@2ndbestvideos just curious cause I’m having this same problem and would your door stay unlocking from the inside or did you have to force it and when you let go it locked ?
Whats up brother my got jammed in the other day....i was wondering Is there a aftermarket cylinder with its own key...i wouldnt mind having 2 keys for my truck..im just trying to save money i have a 99 s10
The cylinders can be "programmed" for your existing key wether aftermarket or oem. If memory serves, my replacement cylinder was aftermarket and cost ~$30. I paid an extra $30 to have it programmed by a locksmith but it did come with directions so you could take the time to set it up yourself.
You can buy a new kit, 2 door locks an ignition cylinder and 2 keys for 85 bux. Changing ignition cylinder is simple. Hope u got it figured out before u spent a ton of money at stealership

I don't understand how you made the ignition key work in the new lock without changing something ?

No Problem!
Can I remove lock cylinder out of my original door and put it in replacement door?
Probably, the procedure would be similar
would your car door with the bad cylinder unlock ?
No it would not I had to unlock it from the passenger side

1500 lock is the same.
Good to know.
I'm replacing mine today they stuck something in the key hole and it must of fell in the door so I don't know if I should replace the whole cylinder
Bro Drew it would depend on how damaged it is. it may be possible to reuse it but it's probably a safer bet to plan on replacing it
OK thank you brother I bought a new key cylinder with two new keys but am I going to need a new door handle as well
Where to get new cylinder
Most auto parts stores (Autozone, Napa, etc.) carry them. You can also get them online
Will this work on a 98? Im taking them off a 95 to put on a 98
My manual has S10s from 1994-2004 grouped in the same category so it is possible that the parts are the same.
Where can i buy item
I ordered a key cylinder offline, some auto parts stores (Autozone, Napa, etc.) stock them as well
Good thing it’s a s10 and my interior door panel is literally broken already just a lil tug.
Replacement cylinder with matching key on eBay for around $50. They can duplicate your key with just a photo of it. Unbelievable, right?
Pretty convenient
I hope you won't have to show how to replace a smashed window.
hopefully not!
