So much passion in that fight. I like to imagine that the reason Vader isn't doing any of his fancy spinning lightsaber tricks are because Luke is dealing such passionate heavy blows he's afraid to let his guard down. So he just holds his lightsaber in front of him in a defensive position.
@@bluepearl_22 I'm not protecting anything. I genuinely like this fight. Sorry you feel the need to rip on other people's likes and dislikes, it's really not going to change my opinion. Maybe you'd be more useful doing something productive :)
The way I look at this scene is not that vader was afraid, or even bested by Luke. Vader simply did not want to hurt or kill his son, this is the conflict within him Luke was talking about. Vader only wished to turn him to the darkside, if Luke killed him so be it, Vader only cared for his son, not himself. But Luke refused to be turned, and in doing so, forced Vader to choose, he chose his son. But Vader wasn't really even trying to fight his son, he was ready to die
It's an actual move in real fencing -- you basically hammer at the opponent's blade to weaken their grip via transferred vibration until they eventually either drop the blade or slip up their defense. The styles in the original trilogy are much closer to fencing/longsword than the flashy wuxia-inspired fighting of the prequels. CGI not requiring characters to have actual weight also allowed for some flashy moves that weren't possible otherwise.
I like how Luke is barely paying attention to where he's swinging in the first few moments, then the moment he makes contact with Anakin he regains some composure. Really amplifies how angered he is
I've always loved the differences between ESB and RotJ fights between Luke and Vader. In ESB, Luke is still immature, young and has a dogmatic view of right and wrong. He rejects Vader's offer to join the Dark Side almost immediately. In RotJ, the temptation is much more real. Luke understands the dualistic and subtle nature of life more, and has matured as a Jedi apprentice. The Dark Side seems more inviting now - he can use it to save his friends and end the war. He sympathizes with his father more, and realizes that good and bad are just ideas bringing him to the brink of giving in. Finally he fully gives into his hate and rage when Vader mentions turning Leia. It's amazing that Luke resisted succumbing to the Dark Side, even after comparing his hand to Vader's freshly cut stump.
Luke was trying to bring his father back to the Light, as he sensed the conflict within his father. But when Vader taunted Luke about his sister Leia, Luke gave into his emotions and unwittingly tunnel-visioned to the Dark Side until calming down and realizing he was going down the same path of his father.
the shot when there fighting under the stairs and all you see is their silhouettes and there light sabers....combined with the music gives me chills every time
More feeling and drama in this shirt clip then every movie that followed. The way he attacks, no flare, not skinny tricks. Just anger and emotion targeted at his father who failed him in every way and he won't lose the last of his family. It's brilliant.
You can see so much resemblance to Anakin form Luke here. It’s the same pattern - Anakin was scared of losing the one she loves most (Padme) so he got angry. And Luke is scared of losing the one he loves most (his sister) is he gets angry. Like father like son.
That was pretty much the plot of the entire trilogy, obiwan and Yoda saw they were basically the same person almost, very similar, they were afraid from the beginning he would make the same mistake
I just get chills all over during this whole sequence. I know it by heart, musical score, dialogue, everything....its legendary, and one of my earliest memories from childhood. Nothing will ever beat this, and not just in Star Wars but in movies in general. I still watch this filled with awe.
This is by far my favorite scene in all of Star Wars. The way the music swells as Luke pushes Vader back never fails to give me chills! We're watching the most powerful man in the galaxy finally meet his match. And as it becomes apparent that Luke is the inevitable victor of their duel the music shifts from heroic to foreboding. The Emperor's theme sneaks in as Luke is tempted to give in to his hatred, then fades as he regains his composure. Brilliant work Mr. Williams, Mr. Hamill, and Mr. Lucas. Bravo.
I used to 'dislike' (hate is too strong a word) ROTJ because of the darned Ewoks but by golly, I have begun remembering Luke as a full fledged Jedi night dealing with Jabba and is army of scum and here as he defeats his father and suddenly realizes who and what he is. Awesome stuff.
It's also obvious that Vader is holding back like Luke said he would. He never goes full power against his son. Some part of him remains Anakin. "I feel the good in you. The conflict"
To me, this is simply the best lightsaber fight in Star Wars. The choreography + soundtrack + dialogue and, last but no least, the emotional conflict between father and son truly makes this the highest point in all of Star Wars IMO.
The way Luke screams just goes right through me. Like he embraces the light and knows what he must do finally. And still after giving into some hate he rejects Palpatine and is willing to die for his friends.
"Obi-Wan was wise to hide her from me" the series makes this quote even more true. The way he keeps her presence hidden in episode 3 especially when they encounter each other
I don’t know how the series adds to that at all, it was already a true statement because of RoTS. Him actively hiding her in an episode of Kenobi doesn’t make it any more wise. Hell her name wasn’t even Skywalker and Reva who was interrogating her couldnt even tell she was force sensitive
Even if he did turn to the dark side, why would he join the emperor? never made any sense. After killing Vader he would just try to kill the emperor too.
The music combined with this scene reminds me of what every character went through throughout the entire trilogy and now this is what it’s all been leading up to. Brilliant
My funny thoughts: *Vader cuts of Luke's hand* "Luke, I am your father." *Luke cuts off of Vader's hand.*" Vader, I am your son!" "Are you mocking me?"
Way of Nothing LOL!! I'm mocking you but.....It no longer says "Luke, I am your father" its now "No, I am your father" its been Mandela effected. We are in the end days my friend. It will be allowed and those who fail to see it will embrace this delusion because they didn't love the truth.) This phenomenon should draw you closer to Jesus more than ever. And this phenomenon that's happening doesn't stop with just our bibles but our History/famous movie's/movie lines/maps/products/people's names/logos etc.. Has been changed/altered as well. Has anyone else ever noticed that as Vader is talking to Luke half of his face is Light 1/2 of his face is dark? I think it's absolutely amazing that they added that little detail to show that Luke was in the middle and was on the precipice of the dark side just as much as the lightside at that moment in time
When that music kicks in, this is the force finally filling Luke with the courage to press forward and do what must be done. It's beautiful...Truly one of a kind cinema.
The other critical thing is Princess Leia was Luke's icon idol CRUSH dream and then he suddenly was hit with the burden of knowing she was his TWIN sister(he'd never had a sibling to understand) and that their innate compatibility and syncronicity wasn't romance But it being their soul tied in the Force as womb beings conceived emerging into consciousness with each other. The Idea THAT beautiful NATURAL tie becoming the means of Leia's possible death harm or destruction moral defilement by his their father thru him = RAGE beyond control
I love how things have changed here... In the first battle Luke could barely stand his ground and was mostly played by Vader, before he got painfully defeated. First one was Luke against The Machine, here we have Luke vs. his power losing father. I especially like the brutality and passion Luke's expressions and moves show near the end. The pull to the dark side is visible - but it suddenly ends, as he comes down for his own sake. Such a masterpiece...
0:47 You took my family from me (Padme, Beru and Owen), you took my mentor (Obi Wan), my friend's (Biggs, Han, many rebels), my father (Anakin). I won't let you take the only family I have left.
For me personally, this is the climax of the star wars saga. The emotion conveyed onto the screen by Hamil here is something else. You can truly feel that everything that's happed had led to this point. For me this was the final word in the saga, not the mess that is the sequels. I mean, I don't mind them, but the writing is so poor I just can't accept them as anything more than OK, when I've known the brilliance that is the original trilogy that came before them.
The sequels have so much potential within them but Disney seemed more concerned with what could be made into a toy than the actual story. Kylo is one of the few new additions I like, probably because Adam Driver is (in my opinion) one hell of an actor. At this stage I'm only looking forward to a decent Old Republic adaption but even then Disney have already shown a level of disregard for lore and structure it makes me want to be spared of the mess they could create, Rouge One is the only movie they've done that I thoroughly enjoyed since their acquisition.
@@vDullahan I totally agree! However, I quite enjoyed the mandalorian series also, but probably because it exists within the original trilogy context. So characters, locations, and events are all relatively recognizable and well established.
@@liammidatron9386 I've yet to watch it but I've heard great things, Disney + isn't here until March so I've to survive a few more months without spoilers!
That is the Problem with the sequels though. Emperor gets killed. No problem he is alive again. Luke suceeding in not completely falling to the dark side. Doesnt matter he lost the will to live because one of his students turned to the dark side. Vader fulfilling the prophecy to destroy the sith. Nevermind the sith are right back 30 years later. 6 movies built up that throne room scene and the sequels just made it useless.
Luke was holding back too, and more than his father. Vader explicitly said he was willing to kill Luke. Luke explicitly said he was *not* willing to kill Vader. And Vader couldn’t overwhelm his son with telekinesis. In fact, in the script for this scene, Luke was supposed to pull his lightsaber out of Vader’s left hand (if you look closely, Vader is holding Luke’s lightsaber hilt when he says “if you will not turn to the Dark Side, then perhaps she will”).
@@theopportuneson699 nah vaders got to say that for the emperor but he’s too conflicted with himself. vaders hate comes from his bad decisions in turning to the darks side and losing padme. He’s sees his son doesn’t have to go down the same path he made. So I think Vader wants to see his son resist the dark side and become the Jedi, Anikan could never be.
Sibling goals. You’d protect your sibling from your abusive father, wouldn’t you? That’s what Luke does here for Leia. Except instead of abusive their dad is just evil.
I love how this mirrors Empire. Back then: the moment Luke became a threat and got in a hit (the one that bounced off his shoulder), Vader lets out this inhuman roar and immediately ends Luke’s ability to fight. Now, the moment Vader becomes a threat (because notice: at no point was Luke in danger, as his skills and Vader’s unwillingness to harm him combined to make it very much in Luke’s favor): Luke lets out a scream of rage and immediately goes on the offensive for the first time.
the most beautiful moment is what comes immediately after: luke looks at vader, and looks at himself. he realizes how vader became what he is, and he throws his lightsaber down. mocking in the face of the emperor. AND luke believes so deeply there is still good in his father, he is even willing to die to prove it. by sacrificing his temptation to the darkside, by sacrificing himself, he redeems his father from the darkness, and luke himself becomes the new face of good and light as a result.
Exaclty, and I find that it makes an echo to the third episode, but this time roles are the other way around : darth vador is more like obi wan defending himself and not wanting to kill his friend/son and luke is more like anakin which is full of anger.
This scene is amazing. Luke had to embrace the Dark Side to defeat Vader and then the look on his face when he realizes what he did and the remorse that follows.
watch episode 3 with obiwan, the entire fight... Anakin was on the offensive. Now look at him, backing up from the sheer fury of determination that he once felt. Palpable hatred, except lukes was to save, not to destroy. It overwhelmed vader, the offensive tyrant could not defend himself from such reckless desperation.
Man, what an epic, emotional, 100% earned climax, where 2 flawed yet relatable characters duke it out as their character arcs come to a conclusion.....................
To anybody who wants the immersion broken, you can see where Luke’s lightsaber broke while filming at 1:25 (just as he cuts off vaders hand). You can see it wobbling like crazy as it falls.

@@bluepearl_22 I'm not protecting anything. I genuinely like this fight. Sorry you feel the need to rip on other people's likes and dislikes, it's really not going to change my opinion. Maybe you'd be more useful doing something productive :)
Kind of like when he was just aggressively battling Obi-Wan. Obi-Wan was always defensive
Poor Anakin, he always get his hand cutted

THIS SCENE IS SO RAW. THERE IS A CONTROLLED MADNESS ABOUT IT. ITS ONE OF STAR WARS BEST MOMENTS.
True. He goes from “I’ll never join you!” To “I can’t kill my own father.”
Luke was trying to bring his father back to the Light, as he sensed the conflict within his father. But when Vader taunted Luke about his sister Leia, Luke gave into his emotions and unwittingly tunnel-visioned to the Dark Side until calming down and realizing he was going down the same path of his father.
I always thought Luke yelled “NOOOOOOOO” in a weird way but he yells “NEVERRRR”
It still sounds weird
i thought he always yelled AAAAAAA like in anger wtf lol
I swore he yelled ,” DARTH.” In a way telling his father was an enemy now and not his father

That music and Luke’s furious anger still gives me chills 39 years after I first saw it. The best scene in all of Star Wars.
Or like Kenobi in episode 1 or most people in that situation but yes
I just get chills all over during this whole sequence. I know it by heart, musical score, dialogue, everything....its legendary, and one of my earliest memories from childhood. Nothing will ever beat this, and not just in Star Wars but in movies in general. I still watch this filled with awe.
Star wars movies were never the same
the greatest lightsaber duel ever. so much raw emotion from the story, acting and music. you literally cannot fault this fight
>Learns that he has a daughter
"Well if you don't love daddy maybe she might"
#feels
To me, this is simply the best lightsaber fight in Star Wars. The choreography + soundtrack + dialogue and, last but no least, the emotional conflict between father and son truly makes this the highest point in all of Star Wars IMO.
1:00 - *Goosebumps and tears* .... *ALWAYS* 😭
The way Luke screams just goes right through me. Like he embraces the light and knows what he must do finally. And still after giving into some hate he rejects Palpatine and is willing to die for his friends.
"Obi-Wan was wise to hide her from me" the series makes this quote even more true. The way he keeps her presence hidden in episode 3 especially when they encounter each other
It’s really fucked up to hear that coming from Anakin about his own daughter.
I think main reason he says that is to be an additional trigger to luke, since he knows how much he liked obi wan
@@nikolasbersebach3045 well no shit, the prequels and the show didn't exist yet 🙄

Brilliant
Palpatine is just sitting up there listening to the sounds under him, having no clue wtf is going on
My funny thoughts: *Vader cuts of Luke's hand* "Luke, I am your father." *Luke cuts off of Vader's hand.*" Vader, I am your son!" "Are you mocking me?"

Never fucking underestimate how far love can drag you into darkness, nor how powerfully it can pull you back to the light. Goodbye Princess...
@@Stego1819 You know they did a character dirty when the actor goes out of their way to warn fans during interviews that they've fucked up.
I love the undertone hum of Vader's lightsaber while he's looking for Luke.
Vader was holding back cause he doesn’t want to kill his son. So kind of him to not force choke Luke to death. A true scholar
That had to have been what Obi-Wan was counting on, its the only thing that makes sense.
@@LoopLife42 Regardless, Luke was holding back as well, so the whole “Vader is holding back” argument is moot. Neither fought at full capacity.

RIP James Earl Jones. May the Force be with you…

Most underrated music in the original trilogy
1:03 i love this part of the song. it’s sounds so good
Do you know what song it is, sounds amazing
Every time they cut to the stairs shot I tear up! There are so many motifs striking at once it’s overwhelming!
the most beautiful moment is what comes immediately after: luke looks at vader, and looks at himself. he realizes how vader became what he is, and he throws his lightsaber down. mocking in the face of the emperor. AND luke believes so deeply there is still good in his father, he is even willing to die to prove it. by sacrificing his temptation to the darkside, by sacrificing himself, he redeems his father from the darkness, and luke himself becomes the new face of good and light as a result.
Legitimately a perfect scene. Shame they kinda ruined it in the later editions by adding that stupid “NOOOooooo!!!!!” from Vader.
