  • What happens when you combine TV gold, Time Team, with one of the most important historic sites cared for by the National Trust at Sutton Hoo in Suffolk? As a month-long excavation sponsored by Time Team takes place in front of visitors, cameras are rolling to capture the action behind the scenes as it unfolds. Watch the video to discover more about the dig and the making of a documentary special, that will be presented by Sir Tony Robinson.
Meet National Trust archaeologist, Angus Wainwright, who talks about how fragments from the past help us to understand the wider landscape and what life was like for everyday people who once lived here. You’ll also hear from Producer-Director of Time Team, Emily Boulting, who reveals how filming ‘Trench Watch’ can be hit and miss yet adds an extra layer of excitement as each fascinating find is unearthed. Archaeologist and TV presenter, Carenza Lewis explains how digging for stories at Sutton Hoo is like piecing together a series of jigsaw puzzles to reconstruct the bigger picture.
This archaeological dig is part of a two-year research partnership between Time Team and the National Trust. It came about after geophysical surveys carried out in 2021 and 2022, identified mysterious features in Garden Field, near to the Anglo-Saxon Royal Burial Ground - most famous for its ship burial that was found and excavated on the eve of World War II in 1939 by Basil Brown.
Watch as archaeologists dig deeper to find out what more can be discovered about Sutton Hoo’s pre-history and its early medieval story, to help us understand how it came to be chosen by the Anglo-Saxons as a royal burial site in the first place. The entire Garden Field has been metal detected and one metre-square test pits excavated by a team of more than 80 volunteers and staff. You'll see how a large trench close to the Visitor Centre is exposing different settlements from different time periods as Neolithic flints or bits of pottery are found.
Exclusive behind-the-scenes footage of the dig is being shared with Time Team fans on its Patreon channel, which you can subscribe to at / timeteamofficial

Proud to be a Patroen member supporting TT. A show that I've loved since it first started.
Also was a great privilege to visit Sutton Hoo during the TT excavations and test pitting and speak with everyone there to find out more about everything they were doing. Was a great day.

I was about to say “yay, no Time Team”. But, no, here they are again. Can’t the British do archaeological work without those people?
