I bought the 850 ssd four years ago as a Christmas present for my girlfriend, but she refused to let me put it in because she feared that something bad would happen to her work files and or screw her laptop up. She's moved on to new job and those fears are gone thanks to company laptop. Four years later your video is still the best in depth instructual video out there. Thank you.
***** the reason I cloned and most others would is because we don't want to start all over with a fresh new install. I want all of my programs and setting back the way it was. Not a lot of us have hours and hours plus all of our original product keys to programs bought 4 years ago. not to mention dragging all pictures and files to one drive then back to this new drive.. clone and go is the way some of us want it
FYI this kit only comes with the SSD, instructions, and CD NO SATA CABLES ARE INCLUDED!!!! Oh,don't bother running out to Best Buy stores, they don't have it in stock! order online or through a local computer store.
I didn't have the USB cable for the SSD but still managed to clone my SSHD to it. So I just turn off my computer unplugged the power cord and hooked up the SSD to the 3rd SATA slot. The first slot is hooked with an 1T SSHD and 2nd is a 1TB HDD. Basically once I hooked it up I used the exact same software to clone my SSHD to the SSD. Once I were done I turned off the computer again and switched the SSHD with the SSD and pretty much good to go. :)
Loco: Awesome video! I just bought a Samsung SSD - and it's amazing to me that Samsung doesn't describe ANYWHERE the details of how to install their device. No instructions with the SSD. Nothing on their website. No CD: I now understand that I need to buy adapter cables & a mounting bracket. Got it. Samsung's customers have to rely on awesome people like you to post their experiences on RUclips. THANK YOU for creating this video. (Samsung should thank you, also - since all of the Instructions & Next Steps, I just got from you, and not from them.)
Thank you for taking the time and making this video... I installed the Samsung 850 PRO and i am super happy with it. Your video took the "fear" out of cloning the hard drive as I have never performed such an operation before. Again Thank you... The only problem that i encountered was accidentally dropping 1 of the small screws into the back of my laptop, I FREAKED ! and i played the game of "operation" with small tweezers for the screw extraction... LOL :)
OPERATION! Lol.... I'm glad you got the screw out! I live the SSD drives! My family and friends have all switched to them! I'm happy to hear you're liking it too :)
i installed the same 500gb SSD Evo into my 2009 macbook pro and after a clean install of OX El Capitan it now boots in just 11 seconds to desktop. Before it took about 2 minutes before usable. Its a superb drive and makes my 7 year old mac feel like a new machine. I agree with your idea to replace all drives in computers with SSD its not as cheap but worth it for the extra speed and life you will get in your machine. Nice video too
thank you very much man your video was the first i saw an the only one i needed to see unlike other installs ive done where i have to watch multiple videos just to get it this deff makes it a lot easier again thanks
nearly fell off my chair laughing at 1.07. "As BOTH of you will know " Thanks for the upload it helped me reinstall my existing ssd to a newer machine with hdd.
I just purchased the same samsung ssd you got. I got it from Frys Electronics for $149. Pretty good price for 500GB as of 9/18/15. Yes, the prices on these SSD drives are dropping fast. The migration software Samsung provided does not support MACS. So, you are a MAC user, you can use Superdupper or Carbon Copy to clone your drive.
I noticed that your source drive data is 698 gigs and your SSD is only 500 gig. How did the clone software work with that? Does the software allow you to designate that you only want the OS cloned?
Thanks for the video. Really thorough with the video and especially useful for beginners like me who have stuck on to hdd for so long. thought I was thorough enough with my research but panicked when I realised that samsung did not provide the mounting and cloning accessories. This video saved me =) Thank you!
Good video thank you, i am about to buy the 850 evo samsung so im glad you mentioned what cables would be needed. I am playing some pretty intensive games such as Ark Survival Evolved which apparently puts a huge load on HDD, mine skips and stutters lol
Hey man, thanks for the video. I used you youtube to install this ssd into one of my laptops. I love the new speed. I too will be upgrading my other laptop with this ssd. Thanks
Hello... You forgot to mention going into bios as soon as you restart with your new ssd.... You MUST change IDE mode to AHCI mode.... AHCI mode is usually found under advanced options and may not be supported by some motherboards. In these cases, you must obtain a separate driver from the manufacturer of the mainboard or the OS to maximise the performance of the SSD.
i wish it would come with that usb because it literally didnt say that you needed that nor the place where you buy it...does it copy every single thing from your old hdd?
Hi there my friend. I have a VAIO Laptop with a crashed hard disk. It's completely dead! I would like to install an SSD in it and then install windows with a Flash drive. Considering the Samsung SSD I'd like to know which is better and suitable: the 850/750 EVO 250gb or 256gb or the 850/750 EVO 500gb or 512gb. Please advise. Thanks.
What he doesn't mention is that you don't get the SATA to USB cable with the SSD, quite annoyed since the rest arrived today, but I've gotta wait for another 4 days for delivery or pay 10 times the price in the shops...
Thank u for this video! I'm buying a new notebook and i would to change the original hard disk with this samsung ssd! So, i have to change it immediately? I mean before I use the new pc? Or can i use them both? Thank u
+des Once you buy the new SSD.... clone the old drive..... install the new SSD and remove the old drive.... then buy a external enclosure for the old drive....install that in there.....reformat the old drive....use it as a external drive.
after 2 years of nearly continuous use, mine still reads great for sequential, however the random read went from like 400 ish to freaking 50, which is not good. at all. these things do wear out and that's my story. however, I am very, very , very happy with the product. 512 mstata version 850 evo. Solid product in a late 2015 laptop, which is where it belongs.
Does the migration software copy the OS as well? Because i'm planning on doing the same with making the new SSD my main drive and replacing my old one.
Does it clone your whole C drive? Can you choose what programs you want cloned? I have a 1tb HDD thats about to give up, with about 600gb used, so i dont want to clone the whole drive, just windows 10 and games. I do have an external 3tb backup drive, so if i buy a new HDD can i transfer everything from the old HDD to the new one, then clone windows 10 to the SSD?
Ok so do I need to use the migration CD thingy if I have a new PC without any harddrive? Can I just put this thing into my PC and install Windows 8.1 on it and I'm good to go? I'm so confused because I've watched so many PC build guides and they never talk about any USB Sata adapters, and aint nobody got time fo dat. So can I install it without the CD if I don't need to transfer any existing data into it?
Hmm so I have a problem.... I do not own a SATA to USB adapter like you... IF i choose not to migrate the stuff on my hard drive and just do a fresh install of Windows 7. Will I be capable of that? I rather migrate everything like you did in this video but is it possible to reinstall a fresh copy of Windows OS on the SSD? I clearly didn't realize there was this whole process before buying.. lol. I guess you can say I had a bad pregame before buying my SSD. Any help is appreciated thanks in advance.
You sure can! Just make sure you go into the bios and change the boot order so that wherever your win 7 is coming from will boot first. Once the install is done, switch it back
Hi ..My Pc has two WD BLUE HDD so i want to clone only the OS hdd so how will i know which HDD to take out of the case after the cloning is done with SSD is it the top hdd or the second hdd ???
About 5% of SSDs fail in the first 3 years, regardless of make. Unless you have lots & lots of RAM you also need a hard drive because the swap/page file needs to be stored there. The TRIM command lets the drive wipe old data that's no longer being used (SSDs can't overwrite data so they have to put it into blank cells). It's important to issue manual TRIM commands so that all software using the drive can be closed first, including Web browsers & office-suite software. Use the TRIM command in your operating system at least every 2-6 weeks. Vital: set the drive controller to AHCI in your BIOS before using an SSD. One person wrote that the SSD didn't appear to show up until they checked in Windows' Device Manager. They allocated a new drive letter to it, any letter that wasn't already in use. One useful tip I read was to add 20% to each partition size to provision for the extra data writes that may be needed. Also don't partition 7% of the drive. So really you use only two thirds of the maximum capacity.
May I missed something, but how the heck You managed to clone 750GB HDD into 500GB SSD? I have 1TB hybrid HDD in my laptop, and I really want to migrate it to SSD, but I dont want to install Windows from scratch.
+Krystian Galicki Whatever has been used, that's what it clones! WHATEVER is on the disc it clones!!! So if you have a 1tb drive, but only 200gb is used,it clones ALL 200gb's! ALL THAT HAS BEEN USED!! OS...whatever!!
Does only C:\ partition get cloned or all the partitions get cloned? Tell me as I don't have the budget for 500GB I will buy 250GB. My current hard drive size is 320GB but C:\ partition is only 183GB?
All partitions. The whole drive.... Whatever is being used. So if you have a 320gb drive, but only 183gb is being used.... It will copy the whole 183gb. A 250gb SSD will work
I just want to migrate my steam folder over to an SSD, so does that mean that I can just install the drive into my case and move the directory over my self?
Do you do raid 0? I'm debating if I should.. But if one drive fucks up you're fucked... But how often do drives fail anyways right? Lol what am I missing
so if you clone the hdd to ssd and if the Samsung were to die or had problems could you just hook up the old hdd and it will boot up normal with all of its files and programs?
Hi, if my HDD has over 1.4TB of used space and my SSD is 500gb, can you select individual files to clone over, or would I need to get rid of most of the data on my HDD before cloning? Thanks
+Jacob Flint You'd need to get rid of some data or buy a 2tb SSD. The target drive needs to have more room than the source drive. The new drive needs to have enough space for the data you are moving.
+SuperSuperzack "Clone" an EXACT duplicate of the original. It clones EVERYTHING on the drive. C,d,a drive/partition...whatever. ALL OF IT!! CLONE! It is a 1 of 1 duplicate. Identical. There will be no difference from the old drive to the new one
Oh okay great. Ive been trying to reinstall windows 10 on a usb so i can install it on my new ssd however ive been having some difficulty. Im finding out since i got windows 10 for free i cant transfer it to a new ssd. Ive been trying to find a solution for hours! I guess ill go buy one of these usb ports for my ssd. Do you know where i can buy one really cheap? ill probably would just use it once so i really dont wanna have to buy an expensive one
Amazon.... They have one specific for their SSD's. Use it and return it. I'm not sure what you're trying to do. This video is to COPY your old drive on to the new. The new drive will function the same as your old.... No need to install a OS. It copies your existing OS.
Hello, I would like to buy a 500 GB SSD, I currently have a regular 1TB and want to know will I be able to just install the SSD and put just windows and have the 1TB as storage for other things?
+oForceField Yes and no.. you'd need to move everything to a external drive.... then delete everything els from your 1tb.....then clone the 1tb to the 500gb ssd. That way windows will be on there. Then format the 1tb and use it as a second drive for storage...then move everything back from the external to your 1tb and return the external to the store :) Or.... put in the new SSD by itself and install windows on it from the beginning like a brand new PC install. The only thing that will be on the SSD is windows and use the 1tb as a extra drive for storage
it will start up faster than the day you got it if its running on a old hdd. best part is youre laptop will last a lot longer on ssds us just as much less power as its performance is higher vs hdd
what if i need to just copy the C drive (system drive) partition from my old laptop disk to the new SSD and i wish not to copy the data from other logical drives of the old disk
My MSI Z97 G45 Gaming boots win 8.1 in 4 seconds with an old caviar black 750gb 7200rpm HDD // when my SSD arrives i'll probably break the sound barrier :)
Is it possible to only pick certain things on my c drive to clone on the ssd. Because I am going to keep using my normal drive and use the ssd for games and os.
+Bluef1re The SSD needs to be able to fit the amount of data you want to clone. It will only clone THE DATA USED! So if your drive is 900gb, but only using 200gb, it will clone the 200gb used. If you only want to pick certain things and the OS to clone....get a external drive....copy all the stuff you want to keep on the external......delete everything els.....clone the drive (which now only has the OS on it)...... the copy everything from the external to the newly installed SSD
I bought the 850 ssd four years ago as a Christmas present for my girlfriend, but she refused to let me put it in because she feared that something bad would happen to her work files and or screw her laptop up. The best comprehensive informative video that I've found for cloning a hard drive. This method worked perfectly and was expertly demonstrated.
Thank you and glad I could help

Hey dude, what cloning software did you use? And is doing this method reliable? (as in does it cause errors with the OS or other files?)
nearly fell off my chair laughing at 1.07. "As BOTH of you will know " Thanks for the upload it helped me reinstall my existing ssd to a newer machine with hdd.

@locoboof I noticed you're using the same trackball as me :D May I ask what keyboard you're using?
Amazing review man. I am going to get this drive for sure! Very easy to understand review and very informing!
Glad I could help
Great tutorial, but is the data to usb adapter required, or can it be done already in a separate drive slot?
Yes,you can do a separate drive slot
I noticed that your source drive data is 698 gigs and your SSD is only 500 gig. How did the clone software work with that? Does the software allow you to designate that you only want the OS cloned?
I think my source drive was only 398.....the source must be smaller than the target drive in order to clone.
Thanks for the video. My ssd should arrive in a couple of days. I can't wait to see the difference in speed.
You're going to love it! Huge difference
Amazing video quality and "format" (Your overview of the product and things) instantly subscribed! keep it up my friend =D
Zyphon thanks
Hi, did any of these fail for you in the 2+ years since?
It's amazing how far hard drives have shrunk. You're not kidding. I used to pick up hard drives larger and deeper then my chest.
Lol
I love SSD just bought Samsung 850 evo. Great slim smaller space and easy. 👍
They are great.
Thanks for the video. Great video man! I have a new PC with 1TB hard drive and wondering if I can keep in my PC to use while I have installed an SSD to run windows?
Yup!
Hey do you need to use the USB to SATA cable. or can you just plug it into your mother board.
You can go off the motherboard too
Great very great desktop locoboof.
well done nelson, thanks from Paris
Thanks Tim
Good review. Would you get one of these or a WD Black 512gb m.2 nvme?? Thanks
One of these
thanks
Hey man, thanks for the video. I used you youtube to install this ssd into one of my laptops. I love the new speed. I too will be upgrading my other laptop with this ssd.
Thanks
+locoboof do you need to make a backup before you intall SSD/clone it?
Only if you want...
so its not needed? if so then thats good
got one for my birthday and didn't install yet. pretty excited after watching this video though.
what if don't have a disk slot
nice video bro... my question is, that ssd is compatible to any laptop?
Yes. Any laptop or PC or MAC
Bro amazing video I subbed

+1 brutha got some tech savvy!
Thanks! :)
Thanks for the vid and explaining the process.
No problem!
Thanks.
They'll both work. Just depends on the size you'd prefer. I'd go with a 850 evo though
What he doesn't mention is that you don't get the SATA to USB cable with the SSD, quite annoyed since the rest arrived today, but I've gotta wait for another 4 days for delivery or pay 10 times the price in the shops...
Actually I did.... I said you need the kit I bought or get the cable.
Thanks for the awesome video man!!!
can you install without usb to Sata ATA cable?
Excellent! Very good job, I will upgrade my computer too.
Thank you
Thank u for this video! I'm buying a new notebook and i would to change the original hard disk with this samsung ssd! So, i have to change it immediately? I mean before I use the new pc? Or can i use them both? Thank u
No, you can swap them out at anytime
locoboof thank u! Then i have to clone before Windows and after i make the ssd change right?

Awesome video, thanks for doing it :)
No prob,thanks for watching!
IT ALL MAKES SENSE NOW OMG
😂
Just ordered the Samsung 850 EVO 1TB
Hope it is as easy as you make it seem. I'm kinda dumb lol...
@Niels Böhm I'm using a logitech K740

😅here in 2024 …crazy how these videos come in handy years later
Glad my video helped.

awesome. Thank you
You're welcome
Hey LocoBoof, would this be easy to install for someone who's never done this befoe?
Absolutely

Good video man. Where abouts did you buy this SSD? You should try and get this SSD lol. Intel SSD 750 fastest SSD ever
PS4 | Gameplays | Game Clips I bought it from frys electronics
Was it expensive, if you don't mind me asking? Cause where im from it's rather quite cheap. under £300
I was able to find the 500 GB Samsung SSD on Ebay for $100 (Best Buy). The adapter plate for 3.5 is sold separately.
Hi ..My Pc has two WD BLUE HDD so i want to clone only the OS hdd so how will i know which HDD to take out of the case after the cloning is done with SSD is it the top hdd or the second hdd ???
Definitely gonna try it out :D SSD is on the way to it's papa :)

I don't raid anything. Just installed as normal. I installed this because my old drive was slow as hell

so if you clone the hdd to ssd and if the Samsung were to die or had problems could you just hook up the old hdd and it will boot up normal with all of its files and programs?

also which one is cheaper? evo or pro?
Evo
is it ok to always turn Rapid mode on ? will it do damage to ssd if I turn it on for a long time ?

Im finding out since i got windows 10 for free i cant transfer it to a new ssd. Ive been trying to find a solution for hours! I guess ill go buy one of these usb ports for my ssd. Do you know where i can buy one really cheap? ill probably would just use it once so i really dont wanna have to buy an expensive one
Amazon.... They have one specific for their SSD's. Use it and return it. I'm not sure what you're trying to do. This video is to COPY your old drive on to the new. The new drive will function the same as your old.... No need to install a OS. It copies your existing OS.
Vickie Zhou bought it on ebay
Where can I find the connection cord, I bought one off marketplace but didnt come with cable,
SSD to usb cable. Try amazon
Good video. Thanks for sharing
I'm building a custom pc from scratch. Do I need to clone my SSD?
Nope. Install the SSD like a regular drive
Hi, what do I do if I want to keep on using the old primary HDD as a secondary drive after the cloning is complete?
Reformat it and install it as a secondary drive
Needed this thanks
Glad I could help

I don't understand your question. This works with Windows 10 and its SATA
Hello, I would like to buy a 500 GB SSD, I currently have a regular 1TB and want to know will I be able to just install the SSD and put just windows and have the 1TB as storage for other things?
:)
+oForceField Yes and no.. you'd need to move everything to a external drive.... then delete everything els from your 1tb.....then clone the 1tb to the 500gb ssd. That way windows will be on there. Then format the 1tb and use it as a second drive for storage...then move everything back from the external to your 1tb and return the external to the store :)
Or.... put in the new SSD by itself and install windows on it from the beginning like a brand new PC install. The only thing that will be on the SSD is windows and use the 1tb as a extra drive for storage
it will start up faster than the day you got it if its running on a old hdd.
best part is youre laptop will last a lot longer on ssds us just as much less power as its performance is higher vs hdd
I bought three of these on sale. Fast little buggers.
where to connect the power cable?
what if i need to just copy the C drive (system drive) partition from my old laptop disk to the new SSD and i wish not to copy the data from other logical drives of the old disk
Then delete everything els, then copy. This will clone the entire drive! Every partition
My MSI Z97 G45 Gaming boots win 8.1 in 4 seconds with an old caviar black 750gb 7200rpm HDD // when my SSD arrives i'll probably break the sound barrier :)
Regis Aex lol

Lol! You got it! Towards the end of the year I got a few big things coming. :)
what screw size at back of ssd?
Does it give you the option to format the sshd do you need to format the sshd before cloning
It will do it automatically
Hey why I just see 232GB on my EVO 850 250GB ?
Cheers!
Your OS will automatically take a few GB's for itself
Do I need to match the GB of the 850 EVO with the GB of my Macbook?
The SSD needs to be bigger or have more space available than the drive it's cloning
Any problems with the migration software?
None at all
My Samsung ssd won’t show up on my pc? Any suggestions?
Try plugging it directly to the motherboard
If i buy a new computer do i still need to clone it over or can i just install it?
I'd clone it..... If you just install it,there will be no operating system on it
+locoboof Alright thanks
Is it possible to only pick certain things on my c drive to clone on the ssd. Because I am going to keep using my normal drive and use the ssd for games and os.
No. doing what I did it clones the WHOLE drive. You could clone and delete what you don't want after?
locoboof my drive for the ssd is 500gb and my normal drive has like 900gbs on it. Will it still clone the os.
+Bluef1re The SSD needs to be able to fit the amount of data you want to clone. It will only clone THE DATA USED! So if your drive is 900gb, but only using 200gb, it will clone the 200gb used.
If you only want to pick certain things and the OS to clone....get a external drive....copy all the stuff you want to keep on the external......delete everything els.....clone the drive (which now only has the OS on it)...... the copy everything from the external to the newly installed SSD
just installed 2 1 TB SSD's
boot time 25 seconds
windows 10
Awesome
