This was my first car! White with tan interior and a manual transmission bought in 89. Hearing the sound of the starter brings back lots of memories from high school and college. Its been fun watching what your doing with it. These cars were easy to forget about since they were lacking power. Mine always sounded like it had gravel in the engine when I really got into it and tried to red line it. Keep going with it!

My father's been working on cars since the early 70s and one thing he taught me that he grew up doing working on cars is that you can use gasoline to clean up the engine bay, basically anything that has gunked up grease/oil. Use a parts brush, something abrasive and it'll have it brand spanking new

A friend came over my house while I was away once and wanted to be nice and cleaned my bathtub with scrubbing bubbles.
the next day, all the caulking and sealant had been eaten away and I had to reseal the entire bathtub.
I dont know what it is, but on some silicones and rubber scrubbing bubbles can be very dangerous, I would not ever use that clean a car engine.

  • @OldCarAlley

I am impressed, the scrubbing bubbles worked good. It detailed up nice. Never tried a air hose to spread stuff like that either... but I will on the next detail job I do. I am so glad you saved that cool old EXP. I can't remember the last time I have seen one on the road! I use to work on them when they were new cars, at the Ford dealer I worked at, back in the day.

WatchJRgo: Word of caution. The rubber seal located on the top lip of the firewall that tightly seals all along the top of the firewall against the hood is a very overlooked safety hazzard. This seal keeps carbon monoxide out of the air box intake for the passenger cabin of the car (fresh air/air conditioning/ heater). I noticed the seal on your car in this video is in very bad shape. On older cars with possible exhaust leaks in the engine bay this seal is crucial. It keeps out the old burned oily smells too. Many people who get head aches, or feel nauseous, and achy in old cars is caused from this seal not being in good condition. I though you may want to know this safety tip.

Looking good! Yeah I've had nothing but problems with PCV valves, these cars just route a tube from the valve cover back into the air box so you could do that or put a little filter over the PCV bung on the valve cover (haven't had issues with those)

I use Oil Eater. It requires no scrubbing unless old, dirty oil or grease is caked on thick. Spray it on, wait a half hour or so and wash off. May require more than one application for caked on grime but it's easier to use and results are great. I think Gunk concentrate mixed with kerosene would work as well or better.

JR, have you ever tried Purple Power? Available form Walmart, cheap, with available one gallon refills for the sprayer. It's in the automotive section I use it on our boats as it makes the bilge so totally clean. Tty it on your Searay. Spray on, let sit for about a min, pressure wash off, it will blow your mind. Don't get it on your hands as it is a SERIOUS degreaser and will dry your skin out sooo fast. (crack) I find it better than anything, and use it for everything.

Wow, you've got an original Ford EXP from 1982, the 1st year of that model! Those cars were rare to begin with... I used to own an 1985 EXP Turbo and those were the fastest and most powerful EXP's Ford offered( 120 HP) , but they could be a maintenance nightmare if you were not careful... I went through 2 timing belts in less than 80,000 miles; the turbo motors just put out too much heat, and was a shame Ford was too cheap to design the car with at least an intercooler or water cooled bearings in the turbo housings, other than that, the car was great on gas mileage ( 35-40 mpg on the highway). Lot's of good times and road trips with my EXP...

Need to learn how to start a carbureted engine properly! If your choke is hooked up correctly, just give it a pump or two and take your foot off the gas pedal. Give her a crank. If it doesn't start right away. Give it a couple more pumps and take your foot off the pedal again. If it still doesn't start, your choke isn't working properly, and maybe your dad can take a look at the specs (old school knowledge). If you flood it somehow, just hold the pedal down to floor and crank until the gas dries out of the carb and intake. Love the story of this spunky little '80s orphan!

I used to keep my engines clean enough that you could eat off of them, until I took a pressure washer to my Dodge truck and found myself stuck at the car wash! $500.00 later I was on the road again but I don't try to wash my engines anymore!
