Hello friends! Just to clarify, the Cobbit pipes shown in this video do have Italian acrylic stems. What are your favorite pipes in these price ranges? Let me know in the comments below!
Rossi pipes are at the higher price end of budget pipes, but that's probably because they are made by Savinelli. Like buying Polo or Chaps, both made by Ralph Lauren.
I always appreciate a good budget friendly workhorse pipe! My most smoked pipes are probably my Missouri Meerschaum bent Country Gentlemans, which even after the addition of a nice Forever Stem are still very inexpensive. Outside of the Rossi and Morgan Bones pipes, the one other briar pipe I'd recommend in the $50 category is a Dr. Grabow Royalton. They're much higher quality than Dr. Grabow's other lines and feature nice thick briar with a gorgeous grain pattern and finish, and unlike all of Dr. Grabow's other pipes the stems on the Royaltons aren't cheap plastic; they're thick and beautiful lucite that's every bit as nice as any of the lucite stems on my $100+ Savinellis. It's hard to believe they're a $45 pipe, and I'd recommend a Dr. Grabow Royalton to anyone looking for a cool and dry smoking pipe that looks as good as it smokes and won't break the bank.
You’re welcome! You really can’t go wrong with these at these prices. That’s important to remember. They are lower priced, but for the money, respectively, they do a great job.

Good to see you,Kevin. Missouri Meerschaum cobs are really good. Right now I am smoking some G.L.Pease Quiet Nights in a Dagner Poker(it's 11.57 p.m. now in India). But for me ( I am an HVAC technician) and I always keep the Missouri Meerschaum Eaton in my van at all times for a back up or if my hands are greasy. My second best smoker is the Dr Graybow Savoy. I treat myself on every Saturday with my Peterson but I don't find the tobacco tastes any better in that than my cobs or Dr Graybow's but there is something about smoking a high quality pipe once in a while. Thank you for your videos.
Thanks for the tip my friend! 👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏😊👍👍 I should get a Morgan Bones, everyone says they breath and handle heat and moisture well, being uncoated, they give a cool, dry smoke.
I recently purchased a MM Country Gentleman straight stem and a Dr. Grabow Omega bent stem. I have smoked both several times now and really like both of them. I paid $58 for the pair.

Thank you for the video. I have good memories of watching my grandfather and his father, my great grandfather, smoking their pipes. I can still smell the sweet smoky aroma. I am nearing 50 years old now and I am beginning my pipe smoking journey. This advice is very helpful.
Loving it out in Missouri just moved to Plato off base. Just wanted to let you know that but other than that I’m excited to see what you have to say this video. P.s been a while since I’ve smoked my pipes cause of the weather, and haven’t been watching your videos that much either. But happy 4.47k subs I believe that I saw.
Great list! Picked up some Orlik gold after your recommendation and just enjoyed my first bowl through my new Shire Cobbit and it was a lovely experience! As for my favorite Virginia so far, it has to be Peterson Flake! I got really lucky and received a 3 year old sealed tin in my first SmokingPipes order (along with a 2022 tin) and I found the aged tin to be incredible. I liked the fresh tin as well, but with a few years of age the flavors that I was looking for in a Virginia were even more evident and lovely. Nice and starting to mellow, truly showed me the importance of even a few years of age! Next I will have to pick up your two Capstan selections here, excited to give them a try!
@@hobbitonpiper just realized I left my comment on the wrong video 🤦♂️😂 been watching through your catalogue and I’m so impressed with your videos! This was intended for the list of favorite Virginias
Just ordered my Cobbit Shire last night with a tin of Peterson Nightcap should get here today I'm incredibly excited, the 6.99$ Missouri meershaum mini hardwood has been a favorite taster of mine for a few weeks now
Shirecobbit is on my wish list. But I’m from North Carolina and we’re home to Dr. Grabow. They’re great briar pipes in traditional styles at under $50. Highly recommended!
I was waiting on this one :) …this comment board wouldn’t be complete without a Dr. Grabow mention! There are others I expect to be mentioned as well, there are lots of options out there!
Fantastic Idea for a video Kevin. And very informative. In my more limited experience I've found Missouri Meerschaum corn cobs to be an excellent value for a budget pipe. I've also been meaning to dip my toe into the world of clay pipes. You already have a great video on the subject for anyone interested. Happy smokes💨 and all the best to you and yours 🙂
Thx for the video. We don't have any local shops so I don't have the luxury of getting to hold a pipe to see if I like it or not before I purchase it. Some of the Bones pipes looked good and for the price of it if I don't like it I wouldn't lose much. I would really like a more expensive pipe but without being able to hold it first it's really a gamble.
@@hobbitonpiper it looks like an elegant partner to my Morgan nose warmers! First bowl of Haunted Bookshop smoked well. I treated it with a mix of mineral oil and beeswax and have a picture I will share if you coach me how to send it
Although I've smoked a pipe off and on since the 80's, I'm a newbie as far as paying attention to what I'm doing. I currently have 3 Missouri Meerschaums - Legend Rob Roy Bent, Country Gentleman (straight, but with a bent bit - shop didn't have a true bent, but let me swap bits) and a Dwarf Cobbit. Considering getting a forever stem for one or two of them. For years I primarily only smoked while camping or fishing so I stuck with the corncobs. When I 'step-up' to a briar, I'll probably pick up a Morgan Bones.
I have often pondered, as pipe smoker tend to to. Why is it that of all the pipes I have that I reach for off the wall or next to my chair to smoke the most often because I enjoy them the most are estate cobs that were part of group lots from EBay that I considered tossing in the bin but just put away. Because of circumstances my pipes went into storage during recuperation I found the antique cobs and was surprised how sweet they smoked. Then my old estate Dr Grabows, Medico, Yellobole, KBB, Kaywoodie pipes from the 1920s - 1960s get smoked more often than my higher grade factory and my few artision pipes get smoked. Much like Paladen Piper I love my Old Codger pipes.
Just picked up a Missouri cob and I’m looking at picking up a 30’s estate yello bole off eBay for roughly 10 bucks in a couple months I’ll probably pick up a briar estate pipe in the 50 dollar range anyway great video very informative and straight to the point
Kevin, so nice to see you again. Spot on, corncob is the way to go, especially for a new pipe smoker. Corncob is an affordable starter pipe and smokes great. I would buy myself a tin of high-quality tobacco, a cheap dollar-store lighter, a tamper, and some pipe cleaners. I could have it all for about 30-40 dollars and it would have been a high-quality experience. By the way, corncob will smoke dry and will naturally add some sweetness to the blend (after all, it is made of corn) when new which is likely going to improve the experience for a novice piper. Recently I purchased a Gasparini, an Italian pipe shipped from Lithuania. Shipping costs are low and the pipe is made of briar with a saddle bit. Good brand but not popularized in America. Less than $50. Thank you for a lovely video🙂
Great content Kevin. I would also like to point out that in the $50 price range, the “Ropp” pipes are pretty darned good as well. Those Morgan’s are hard to beat though.
I'm very happy you mentioned the Ropp marque. I believe we excluded the Ropp simply because of lack of experience with the Etudiant series. In general I love the Ropp offerings due to the classic French styling along with the lack of bowl coating and the use of vulcanite and horn stems. The Algerian Superior line is especially fine and I have many of them.
My local shop carries pipes from a guy that sometimes sets up at a flea market. 45 dollars each and they are BEAUTIFUL. Extremely well made, and the one I got has a gorgeous caramel colored stem and a deep rose finish on the briar. Smokes incredibly. I only own a few pipes (mostly for rotation purposes, since I'm not really a collector), and it was time to retire my Dr. Grabow starter that I got almost 30 years ago and give it to a friend that was getting into smoking, so yeah, I jumped on that one.
Hey Kevin, good to see another video up. I really like the MM General pipes. I have several different types of cobs. One advantage to the cobs is they do allow you to really taste the tobacco. They seem to keep on going and going. As always I love the happy cheerful music. Have a good one my friend.
The MM Country Gentleman is my go-to cob pipe. I bought Forever stems for two of them, and they smoke wonderfully. I have featured one or two of them on my channel and always remind folks that they have a great place in anyone's rotation. 🤠
Thanks Kevin. Great video. I have a few cobs, a Great Dane that I use exclusively for Carter Hall and a Mark Twain that I love using for Plum Pudding. Btw, I have a pear wood pipe from Scotte that smokes great for around $30. Al
Hello Kevin i am jose luis from argentina greats pipes and the Rossi its so cool i love it.Not ever the most expensive pipes are the best.My experience in 1996 i bought a Peterson donegall its smoke well and i paid 160 dollsrs in that time but i have a pipe made in argentina the shop was cassano and i paid 30 dollars and that pipe for me smoke best than the peterson and was made with italian briar.Thank you and goods smokes.
I love my Savinelli pipes, but I cherish my Rossi pipes a little more. The Rossi's smoke cool and dry where the Savinelli's smoke a bit too wet and tend to get a bit hot. Perhaps Rossi pipes are cured a bit longer than Savinelli pipes?
I've certainly had the opposite experience but I would mention that the lowest cost Rossi line does not accept a filter while many of the higher priced Savinelli and Rossi pipes do. I've found it important to utilize the insert to get them to smoke best. I would be very surprised if the lower cost pipe (Rossi in this case) underwent a better curing process. I think my favorite Savinelli pipes are the Punto Oro Gold line and they are undoubtedly well cured. I like them as much as some of the Savinelli Autographs I've had. I've probably owned over 100 Savinelli pipes over the years so I have a better statistical sample of them relative to Rossi. I doubt I owned ten Rossi pipes but I think they are clearly intended to be the Savinelli seconds. Perhaps if we could venture back in time to a day (pre-WWII) when they were separate companies the story would be different.
Ali Express has some sandalwood 9mm filtered pipes between $4- $12. It takes a month to get to America but the billiard I got has been fantastic for the price. It's a good glove box/ spare pipe.
Pretty cool Kevin! Love the country gentleman. Molina also makes some decent pipes under $50, I've owned 3 so far and they all smoke pretty good. I gave one away and it's still being enjoyed too. Hope you and family are well.
I have a little of everything when it comes to pipes. I have learned not to put much consideration into the initial purchase price. I have bought some expensive pieces that are absolutely worthless. I have learned to constantly evaluate what the current demands of my lifestyle are like. This should be considered before purchasing any pipe. What will I be doing with this pipe? And what am I getting out of it. I am getting older. I put a high value on a light weight piece which isn’t going to wear out my jaws, and fit well in my hand. I can smoke slower and cooler, burning holes through my pipe is of little concern for me. Lately, I find myself reaching for the cobs.
Thank you for validating my pipe collection. I have about 30 pipes and 100 tins of tobacco in my collection. Only been doing this for a year. 29 pipes are mostly under 25 dollars. I only have 1 that was 120. I am learning what pipe goes with what tobacco and cut seems to have a reason for size of bowl. I just keep learning. Most are muxiang off ebay. Just got 2 HS pipes that are small bowls. 😊
Sounds like you’re off to a great start! Here’s some thoughts on the benefits of seasoning a pipe to a blend if you’re interested: ruclips.net/video/xyEZq61Uy3I/видео.htmlsi=7mW9hTF41VJnTZSL
That's a great question. Sadly the work required to make a quality stem that accepts a quality filter drives the price up. Of course many of the MM line do accept 6mm filters. The problem I've found is the plastic MM stems that accept the 6mm aren't formed to very exact standards. The higher quality charcoal 6mm filters (Savinelli and White Elephant, etc) are slightly too large to fit properly. I always ream them out slightly with sandpaper which only take few seconds. I prefer the 9mm filter pipes if you can find them. For a while there Rattray's had some 9mm filtered pipes that were very close to the $50 range, when on sale, but inflation has elevated the price point. The later versions of Rattray's have had the problem of allowing stain to corrupt the mortise and draft hole by employing the dip staining process. If you do get one with stain in it you should take the time to clean it out with Everclear and maybe even some sandpaper and/or a light 3-4mm round needle diamond file simply to get the airway back to bare wood.
The Missouri Pride from MM is the best pipe money can buy IMO, I smoke my pair all the time. Like, my wife's picture of me in her phone has me smoking one. But I also drive a 88 pickup!
I have a couple wood pipes from Meerschaum, my first pipe that I liked was one of those. Less than 10 bucks. I don't care for corn cob pipes, so the Meerschaum Ozark ($9) and Meerschaum Zenon ($18) are my favourite cheap pipes.
Thanks for the suggestions. After watching this I picked up a Rossi Notte 320 for $66 on Amazon. Also would like to ask if you've tried Edward G. Robinson pipe blend? Its one of those that the first time I tried it I really didn't like it. But now after about 5 times im loving it.
I was so happy to see a video from you today, it's been a while. I would like to add to your $50.00 and under. The Larocca brand sell for between $30.00 and $40.00 on some different websites. They look to be some nice pipes. I haven't tried them yet but they are on my list.
Great video/collab, cheers for sharing! Mainly cobs here as a newbie- particularly using the country gentleman, the maple hardwood apple, and the general atm, as preferring filters currently!- BUT over Christmas, delved out into some first, ‘proper’ purchases, and have picked up a handful of block meerschaums, as well as a Savinelli 920 ks, and a Peterson Sherlock Holmes Christmas 2021 Rusticated Original!😄 Might’ve gone for the seconds midstep though, if aware (though seemingly non-filters may have put off, not sure!).. Also, it’s cool, yet crazy, how many new models they are coming out with at Missouri Meerschaum!!😅 Just went there to check a model to share above, and a good handful of interesting newer additions to their growing lineup, wow👍
Yes, and just today I noticed they’ve upgraded the stems on the Cobbit Shire and Elf pipes to a translucent acrylic gray, go take a look! So nice at no extra charge. Gonna have to get another Cobbit Shire now… :)
Great vid. The MM Apple diplomat with a forever stem is my go to pipe right now. Would like to know how the Morgan Bones little apple smokes for you. Is it filterless? I kinda want one now, Haha Cheers
@@hobbitonpiper A churchwarden stem has a good physical property that benefits as well. Since it is a long stem, physics requires less of a draw to pull the smoke. Think about as the same thing as a rifle. A longer barrel will get you more range with the same load than a shorter one. It also keeps the smoke out of your eyes. I broke my old stem, but am in a special state where I can't order one online. Going to have to travel to shop around. Its too bad someone can't come up with a proxy delivery service for restricted items people can mail products to and travel to pick them up.

Thank you for the video. I have good memories of watching my grandfather and his father, my great grandfather, smoking their pipes. I can still smell the sweet smoky aroma. I am nearing 50 years old now and I am beginning my pipe smoking journey. This advice is very helpful.
That’s great! Be sure to see the Playlists tab, particularly the How To and Smoke With Me series for helpful information!
Yeah it’s easier to enjoy outdoor smokes in warmer weather , at least when it’s not freezing! :)
ur a legend mate
Well thank you, I’m just here to help with info and for folks to have someone to hang out with :)
Yes, age really makes most virginia’s shine
@@hobbitonpiper just realized I left my comment on the wrong video 🤦♂️😂 been watching through your catalogue and I’m so impressed with your videos! This was intended for the list of favorite Virginias
Just ordered my Cobbit Shire last night with a tin of Peterson Nightcap should get here today I'm incredibly excited, the 6.99$ Missouri meershaum mini hardwood has been a favorite taster of mine for a few weeks now
Nice! I think you’ll enjoy those

I also have a couple Dr Grabow pipes and find they do an excellent job, with or without filters
I have several Dr Grabow pipes and they are my favorites.
Thanks John, yes, you can definitely explore clays in this price range as well!
Same. American Made too!
@@diaboyos very little gamble with Rossi or Savinelli. Tremendous value for the money in my opinion
@@hobbitonpiper Thank you. I'll look them up and see what they have.
Just took your recommendation for a Morgan Bones to add to my short briar pile
@@chuckmccullough5382 awesome, let me know what you think of it!
@@Doc_Watson sounds like you’re on a good path! :)
$50 too rich for me but I still enjoy videos like this . Thanks . N.J.
Lots of much cheaper options in this video
for your consideration!

Ah, connecting with a pipe is such a special thing, Ron. Whatever the reasons, sit back and enjoy!! Isn’t it great?! :)
Just picked up a Missouri cob and I’m looking at picking up a 30’s estate yello bole off eBay for roughly 10 bucks in a couple months I’ll probably pick up a briar estate pipe in the 50 dollar range anyway great video very informative and straight to the point
Glad you enjoyed it!
That sounds like a great deal! I hope it smokes well for you over the years
Great suggestions. Hope you are well Kevin. Happy smokes
Thanks Steve, yes I’m well! Happy smokes to you also :)
Good ta see again.."pipe whisperer" 👍
Thank you for being here, Troy! :)
Fantastic Video you sold me on a Morgan Bones... :)
I predict you’re going to like it….. :)
Great content Kevin. I would also like to point out that in the $50 price range, the “Ropp” pipes are pretty darned good as well. Those Morgan’s are hard to beat though.
Yes indeed, Ropp is another we expected to be mentioned in the comments, very good! Several great options out there to try!
That’s awesome!! Reminds me of the Sardinian Briar pipe I found (see the Pipe Stories playlist)…
Hey Kevin, good to see another video up. I really like the MM General pipes. I have several different types of cobs. One advantage to the cobs is they do allow you to really taste the tobacco. They seem to keep on going and going. As always I love the happy cheerful music. Have a good one my friend.
I made you wait for the music this time, Frank, did you notice? :)
@@hobbitonpiper You did, but I had to go double check. It's the happiest music in all the ytpc.
Very interesting video Kevin. I have yet to buy a Bones pipe ..... guess I should remedy that. I'm 100% with you on the M.M. cobs. Love my cobs.
Yeah Brian I think you’d love a Morgan Bones pipe!
The MM Country Gentleman is my go-to cob pipe. I bought Forever stems for two of them, and they smoke wonderfully. I have featured one or two of them on my channel and always remind folks that they have a great place in anyone's rotation. 🤠
CG’s are great!! Especially with Forever Stems :)
Thanks Kevin. Great video. I have a few cobs, a Great Dane that I use exclusively for Carter Hall and a Mark Twain that I love using for Plum Pudding. Btw, I have a pear wood pipe from Scotte that smokes great for around $30. Al
Very cool, I’ve seen those Scotte pipes online, I’m glad it smokes well!
I bought two and they are great and bought two more from Chris and then ordered two more today from Amazon
That’s awesome, Joseph, I think you’ll get great use out of them! :)
I’ll get the corncob pipe. Thank you
You’re welcome!
It’s so great when you find a favorite inexpensive pipe!
@@hobbitonpiper yes Kevin its fantastlc.
I want one of those humongous pipes you mentioned that hold a ton of tobacco wow that would be one hell of a pipe
Haha there are some big ones out there to choose from!
It actually may be the opposite but I’d have to study that more….either way, smoke what’s working best for you! :)
No love for Ropp? Mine is one of my favorites smokers. A great pocket pipe or camping/walking companion.
Ropp makes some great pipes!
What are 'basket' pipes?
Lower priced, often no-name (or “seconds”) pipes found at a local pipe shop often on the counter in a basket, thus the name :)
I’ve had three pipes and two of them were terrible but my Missouri meerschaum was the cheapest and is my favourite.
Great choice! :)
Ali Express has some sandalwood 9mm filtered pipes between $4- $12. It takes a month to get to America but the billiard I got has been fantastic for the price. It's a good glove box/ spare pipe.
That sounds cool! Incredible price
Pretty cool Kevin! Love the country gentleman. Molina also makes some decent pipes under $50, I've owned 3 so far and they all smoke pretty good. I gave one away and it's still being enjoyed too. Hope you and family are well.
Great recommendation! It’s really great to see you out here again, Jorge :)
I cannot seem to find the Rossi Vitoria line. Are they. Still being made?
@@junauralojipan3062 not sure, but the Rossi Mezzanotte series would be very similar and is in stock
What are your thoughts on Dr. Grabow pipes?
Another good option! I favor the ones listed here more
I have a little of everything when it comes to pipes.
Cobs always seem to provide a consistent, pleasant smoke don’t they! :)
Here’s some thoughts on the benefits of seasoning a pipe to a blend if you’re interested:

Haha, I smoke my wacky-backy in a M.M. Pony Express. I’m a Cob Codger for forty years.(Rossi fan also)
Cobs are great! As are Rossi’s :)
Great video! Thank you! Are there any solid filtered pipe (activated charcoal filters) options close to $50 that you would recommend?
@@russhicksart Great tips! Thank you very much! I really appreciate it!
The Missouri Pride from MM is the best pipe money can buy IMO, I smoke my pair all the time. Like, my wife's picture of me in her phone has me smoking one. But I also drive a 88 pickup!

Great video/collab, cheers for sharing! Mainly cobs here as a newbie- particularly using the country gentleman, the maple hardwood apple, and the general atm, as preferring filters currently!-
BUT over Christmas, delved out into some first, ‘proper’ purchases, and have picked up a handful of block meerschaums, as well as a Savinelli 920 ks, and a Peterson Sherlock Holmes Christmas 2021 Rusticated Original!😄

Briar is definitely the way to go and those Bones pipes are solid. Just wish they had a Gandalf long stem for it for the true LOTR experience.
Several other churchwarden options are out there however for a LOTR experience, be sure to see my Pipe Stories playlist!
