Thanks for a fantastic video! Demonstrating, contrasting and comparing all 3 methods in the same video, side by side is brilliant and helpful. I'm a fan of rather frequent tamping as i smoke a bowl down to refuce relights. I found that it's easy to "over-tamp" (add THAT to the lexicon) when using the cube or especially the fold and stuff method. The 1st time I used that method, I ended up having loosen up the tobacco with the pick on my Czech tool. Sice then, I've gotten the feel for it and really enjoy the fold and stuff method. With coins, as well! Thanks for the informative video. Really enjoyed it!
I’m a big fan of the fold and stuff method. I like to fold so that the strands pint up when put in the pipe and then put a sprinkling of bits on top to get a good hold on the flame. It makes the smoke last a good 25% longer than rubbing out. You get a deeper flavour burning through the strands imo. I love flakes for this reason. All the best.
trying this now with some old dark fired, sprinkled some that i rubbed out previously and man what a difference! thanks to you and @hobbitonpiper for the lesson.
Thank you for keeping this channel pure to its purpose! You are now officially one of three presenters I check in to learn from. The drama in this world is even infiltrating into the pipe community. Thanks again for your content and awesome demeanor you possess! Very professional presentation! Good job!
Glad you're enjoying the Fold & Stuff method! I had been rubbing out flakes for decades until Erik Stokkebye introduced me to this technique. While I can't recall if he credited his father or grandfather for showing him, I do remember him mentioning it was a family tradition. From a more scientific perspective, the Fold & Stuff method appears to regulate the temperature of the coal and the burn rate effectively. Keeping the temperature of Virginia tobacco's mean burn below 190°C is crucial to avoid the release of formic acid. Similarly, Burley tobacco releases a significant amount of ammonia at the same temperature and even lower. Based on my measurements of coal size and chamber temperature in the pyrolysis zone, both the Fold & Stuff method and Fred Hanna's Air Pocket/Cannonball method-which I know you'll demonstrate in a future video-yield similar results. One key trick to success with these methods is to resist the urge to light the entire surface of the tobacco bed. Instead, I prefer to light the center well and then manage the coal as it progresses. Fred describes this technique well in his book. I should also mention how well Burleys seem to perform with the cube cut approach. I think General Douglas MacArthur was on the right track with his cubed Harkness F blend he loved so much...or maybe it was the deertongue in it. The extra surface area and sharp corners of the cubes really help maintain the coal.
I started my pipe journey about 3 months ago and you sir have been one of my main mentors since the very moment I started even thinking about it. Thank you so much for all the wise advices and specially for your unique Hobbit-like chill vibes. Thanks!!

I congratulate you again 🔥 the world of slow smoking needs professional RUclipsrs like you who, with precious advice and shared experiences, show smokers an art that is undervalued. The hectic life leads to other pleasures, simpler and more usable such as vaping, but smoking a pipe is different, it's really like talking to yourself while listening to the burning tobacco

You chose the right approach. there is no single perfect way. Every blend has its own suitable way. Never tried the cube cut definitely trying it. One thing I have noticed if you want to develop a nice cake quickly, fold and stuff works the best

These are all tried and true methods that give me excellent results, and each is a different experience, so yes you should experiment with these as you have time! :)
Have always smoked only the ribbon cut pipe tobacco. Am going to my first pipe show tomorrow, know Sutliff and Lane tobaccos will be at show. Thanks for helping me understand using different types of pipe tobacco...may soon be experiencing something other than the ribbon cut.😊
Yay! Another AR piper! I just got into piping, and I'm loving it. I just wish I could find a good tobacco shop that has a variety of pipe tobacco, near me. North Central AR
I typically rub out the flake and tear the ribbons into smaller bits. I have tried the fold and stuff and it worked just fine, but maybe a little more difficult to keep lit. I believe i will try the cross cut cube method👍.
When I do method one, if I don't really get it down to a fine ribbon, I seem to have to re-light all the time, probably due to relatively low surface area. Method two has been great for me for extracting extra flavor! But it definitely takes some playing around with how fine to cut it. Too fine may make it burn hot and fast, which isn't too bad if you just smoke it easier and slower. I will now have to try method three! Flakes take a little extra work. But the trade off as you get the feel for it over time is that you get to break it down in a way that makes it burn the way you like best.

Excellent. I have just recently started experimenting with flake tobacco. I thought for the longest time that they would be a horrendous pain and a mess, as my memory of such things goes back to my grandfather who chewed tobacco out of a bar. He's put the tobacco bar out and hack off a piece with his pocket knife, and it seemed like a big honking mess. I have found I almost prefer flake. It's certainly easier to transport for a nice outdoor smoke.
Oh boy, never tried any of those 2 last methods and I just opened a tin of Samuel Gawith Best Brown. You bet I am going to try this. Thank you so much Sir. God bless you.
@hobbitonpiper my wife actually ordered me a pound of the Macbaron Vanilla Cream loose cut, a pound of Sutliff Vanilla Custard and a pound of the Vanilla Flake. I'm trying to stock up on as much Sutliff/Macbaron that I can! I also like Creeper of the Corn by Missouri Meerschaum, but that's made by Sutliff so I'll have to stock up on those too!!
Great video Kevin! I only have two flake tobaccos currently, orlik golden sliced and capstan blue, thanks to your videos. Both of which I have never tried other methods besides rubbed. Looking forward to your next smoke with me video. I enjoy the long chat and smoke.

Afternoon Kevin, you appear to really enjoy that 673 style.I had just that Roma Lucite 673 in my cart yesterday but opted for a another canadian in the Irish Harp sandblasted Peterson fishtail. My thinking was I've just had great success with two savinellis in the 804 canadian style. They have slowly become two of my favorites. You obviously didn't find it too short on length I might have to try it next time the itch strikes. Another great video! I've enjoyed that folded method of slowing down the burn of the T's to seemingly bring out more nuance to flavors when smoking flakes. On method two I just use a single edge razor blade to slice down through the folded flake using a bed of slightly larger pieces on the bottom to keep from sucking small bits into the pipe and cutting smaller as I go through the three layers that works well too.
Kevin, my friend. Thank you so much for posting this. I’m always excited to see when you post a new video. since you like method number three the best for flavor, is that the method you always use now? Have a blessed weekend, my friend.

@@ChristinaCleghorn-n3t you’re very welcome, hopefully it helps! Fun to try different ways :)
I love flakes!
Oh boy, never tried any of those 2 last methods and I just opened a tin of Samuel Gawith Best Brown. You bet I am going to try this. Thank you so much Sir. God bless you.
Let me know what you think of those two methods once you have time to try them for a while!
Thank you for these great demonstrations.
You’re very welcome! :)
Macbaron Vanilla Flake is my favorite flake, I've tried #1 and #3. I will try #2 today when I pack my first bowl.
@@justinhayes2194 enjoy! You should stock up on that MB Vanilla Flake if it’s your favorite…
Yesss! Finally another hobbiton piper video! Hope you have a blessed one Kevin!
You too! :)
@@hobbitonpiper Thank you good sir!
I've tried 1 and 3 but 2 is going to get tried tonight. Great video
Awesome! I hope you enjoy!
I've been rubbing the flakes out. Might have to try the other methods.
You should, it could be fun! Thank you so much again, Ian, for continuing to support my efforts! 🙏-Kevin
Great video Kevin! I only have two flake tobaccos currently, orlik golden sliced and capstan blue, thanks to your videos. Both of which I have never tried other methods besides rubbed. Looking forward to your next smoke with me video. I enjoy the long chat and smoke.
Coming soon! :)
Thank you Kevin for sharing on these methods😊 Appreciate it😊
My pleasure!
Thank you my friend for these wonderful ideas. 👍👌💨
You’re very welcome, friend!
Good Evening 😊 You are a God Send 🙏🏽 I just got a tin of flake tobacco and was wondering how im going to do it 🙁 Awesome Video👌🏽 Informative and Educational 💯 Appreciate the advice 🤗 Have a wonderful weekend & Greetings From South Africa 🇿🇦
Enjoy! :)
Cool video. Love the pipes, too. Someday, I'll be able to afford one of them.
@@mastermasonjoewillis3904 you’ll enjoy them!
Very cool! Yeah you definitely should add a 673 to your collection at some point if the mood strikes! :)
Great video Sir
Thank you!
The first method is simple and makes a very good tobacco slicing))))
Yes it is!
Thank you so much. I had hoped you would do a video on this.
Awesome! Glad you liked it :)
Really good tutorial! Very clear. I normally rub out flakes, have tried fold and stuff but not cube cut. Having some GH Briwn flake Aro, rubbed out!
Nice! Yeah you should try the cube cut method sometime!
Thank you man, I really like your chanel!
You’re very welcome!

Some great info to pass along! Thanks for another great video!
Never hurts to revisit the fundamentals :)
@@hobbitonpiper I've never tried #3 Think I'll try it later today!
When will you publish a new video? Soon I hope! I enjoy your channel.
When I get inspired and have time :)
Great video thank you for more valuable knowledge
You’re very welcome!
Very cool. I’d be curious how the fold and stuff method works on a coin cut such as Escudo.
Very well! You’ll may have to combine a few coins based on bowl size
Another excellent video!
Thanks Robert!
Excellent video. Thanks.

Kevin, my friend. Thank you so much for posting this. I’m always excited to see when you post a new video. since you like method number three the best for flavor, is that the method you always use now? Have a blessed weekend, my friend.
Not always, but most often yes
