I dont rate coddled footballers like that. Foden has been spoonfed the perfect situation the perfect players around him his entire career and people act like hes the english equivalent of neymar. Saka started his career at left back for a terrible arsenal team and was their best player than swiched to the other side of the pitch and was still the best.

commentator said it best. reactive rather than proactive. waiting that long to make changes is a fucking joke. i didnt mind the different formation probs slightly better overall than previous 4 games but he does not make changes soon enough at all
To the point about luck- the guys are right, if your plan is 'be horrible and boring and restrictive and conservative and make sure nothing happens... and then just rely on moment of brilliance from brilliant players', then you can't say he's just lucky when those moments of brilliance win us games. You can absolutely say it's a bad plan, and even that it's the sign of an extremely limited manager, but it's definitely not fair to say its luck if it's literally his plan and it keeps paying off.
It's maybe the luckiest run ever, you guys won the last two games with pretty much the same amount of goals as total shots on target, should be impossible to have a nearly 100% success rate on goal and act like that is in any way game plan related, if you can score with every shot on target why not score more than once or not wait until you're down and just start scoring first, maybe in the first half even wouldn't that be crazy

If someone says 'you can win a million pounds if you do one of two things, either you pass a maths test, or we flip a coin', and you think your best option is to flip a coin, and you win, it's kind of redundant to come out and say 'you only won because you were lucky'. Yeah. I know. That was the idea. Southgate is an extremely limited manager, and in my opinion this has been his worst tournament, but his very clearly is trying to make calculated gambles. His priority always, much to England fans' dismay, is to defend defend defend, stay solid, kill the momentum of the game, and he knows that he has 5 or 6 generational, world class talents in his attacking line up, so betting that one of them does something very good at some point is a relatively safe bet. That bet has paid off twice in a row, but maybe it won't pay off next time. Like I said, he's an extremely limited manager. But it is definitely going to be his plan for the next game as well. And it's just redundant and kind of silly to look at that and say he's 'lucky'. There's always an element of luck in football, but if you get certain things right, you at least get to choose your own things to bet on.

Your initial comment doesn't match your analogy. On the one hand "its not fair to say he's lucky", but on the other hand his luck is so obvious that its like flipping a coin and therefore "redundant" to point it out. I think its fair to say a manager is lucky when they're reliant on individual brilliance, even if that strategy ends up working. Because like you mentioned, its like a coin toss. That being said, i don't think this particular game was lucky. Matching their formation was the right move and massively improved saka's performance who was the eventual goal scorer

Because by the same token, if you have a basketball hoop in your garden, and you reliably sink a free throw 9 times out of 10, and then same questions, to win a million, maths test or score a free throw, and you choose free throw.... OK, now it's not 50/50, it's about 90% odds, but you know for sure that you don't make the shot every time, so it is a gamble. But you are making a gamble based on a solid calculation. And again, it would be silly to say 'you just got lucky' if you win it. Between them, Kane, Foden Saka and Bellingham scored 90 goals in just their league games this season. Laying out a plan that keeps you defensively solid, and depends on one of those guys to score at some point is a calculated bet.

@@cjchaworth easy to say that with hindsight these are some of the most talented players in the world currently and will be looked back on as better than the golden generation with time. Either way this team is succeeding in spite of Gareth not because of him, you can cite all these meaningless statistics and achievements but football can be viewed with our eyes and we can see that miracles have bailed him out, his groups and paths to the finals have been exceedingly easy and yet we still look terrible.
@cjchaworth Look at the draws the golden generation got. We went life and death in '02 with one of the best teams in football history and very nearly beat them. Portugal '04 also had a very good side, and if it wasn't for a goal being wrongfully disallowed, we wouldn't have even gone to pens. Not saying the golden generation didn't underachieve-they did-but in context, it's not nearly as bad as some make it. This team is 100% more talented when compared to the competition on a player-to-player basis. Only France comes close, whereas a few teams were clear of us in the 2000s.
Now, let's look at Southgate's record when it counts. We've played 4 big teams, lost to 3 of them, having been betting favorites in all but 1, with our only win being against one of the poorest Germany teams in recent memory. Then when you take into account how we played-going a goal up within minutes only to sit back and give it away twice, along with the bad substitutions debacle-you'll see that Southgate's a completely inept fraud of a manager.
That said, I've got a funny feeling we're going to pull a Greece and shithouse our way to being European champions. Hopefully, Southgate's only redeeming quality (his luck) can pull through for us.

Much improved performance because we were in control for all but maybe 20 minutes across the entire game. There were still plenty of shaky moments, but we defended well and stuck together. That mentality can carry us all the way; however, the France style reliance on individual players for moments feels a lot riskier than creating chances through a system more like Spain. We can win it, but it's going to be a bumpy and cagey road regardless 😅
yeah i actually like england in this formation. Gave them a lot of midfield security and really helped sakas performance. I'd only tweak it slightly to give england more going forward. I'd start watkins, palmer over foden and shaw over tripier

It isn't "luck".
Before the Tournament, most would agree that this England squad had plenty of World Class talent.
The reason that they are winning at the end of games is simply because they are playing for a Coach/Managaer who employs the most basic, vanilla, boring system you can think of...
He has quite literally taken all of the creativity and energy away from the Players.
They (the Players) are FORCED to win by late game heroics.
It's not even a good system when you have Stones and Walker making defensive errors leading to Switzerland's goal.
Southgate employs a bargain sale version of Italy's defensive style.
Except Italy have historically always done it better and still won trophies playing like that.

In that 1st Half, it seemed like England had Possession for most of the time. They just stayed at midfield, passing back and forth, never really advancing or attacking.
Then, ever once in a while, they would get a pass to Saka, and it was almost always bad passes or bad timing. He was double teamed on the wing EVERY TIME he touched the ball, and on the few time he made it to the baseline, they even threw a 3rd Defender at him.
Then never really tries anything else.
As for the Defnese...
Switzerland walked the ball to midfield and were able to Crack the Defense with one or two quick passes.
It seemed like nothing was working for England. If this is a Defensive tactic, then Southgate is even worse than I thought.

Southgate's primary aim is to be conservative so as to stay in the game and then trust in his attackers to come up with something.
Unfortunately for him, it's a terrible set up as England's defense and keeper aren't their strongest aspects.
