      They originally reported they achieved a quantum advantage. DW played with words here for some reason, placing quantum supremacy in quotes changing the original quote. Slight biases always seem to make their way into news...

      That’s simply a technical term used heavily before quantum advantage became popular. The quotation marks could imply that this is a scientific term as well. Pretty much like he shot a ‘bicycle kick’. And be aware that you did something far worse: DW did not say China “claim quantum supremacy” but China claims ‘quantum supremacy’. That’s can have very different meaning.

      @@nelsonmandela9590 You are the one playing words here. How many people know the term "quantum supremacy"? It's introduced by a western scientist not a Chinese researcher. DW clearly knows that and wants to imply that China is claiming a supremacy here and I just said that out loud.

      It's an important distinction. For example, an old GameCube is very slow by modern standards but the hardware is heavily optimized for a few hundred operations but trying to emulate there same game on a modern laptop which is many times more powerful in most workloads would still struggle with the GameCube game.
      It's the same reason why new ARM devices have trouble using x86 applications. Your phone for example is incredibly efficient at playing RUclips but if you tried to use the full featured version of Blender or Davinci Resolve, your phone world struggle severely.

      @Chapi Esteros There is no single benchmark for "raw computational power" though. Different hardware optimizations benefit different kinds of computation. If this system is 10e14 times as powerful than another tool for the task they're using it for- great. Use the correct tool for the job. It's just not possible to make such a generalized statement about the system's capabilities.

    There are some inaccuracies in this report.
    1. it would take a supercomputer (Sunway TahuLight) 2.34 days to calculate the same problem, not 2 billion years.
    2. Calling it a computer is inaccurate, even describing it as unprogrammable is deceiving. What they have done is make an experimental setup where locations of photons can be determined experimentally and are comparing it to a supercomputer calculating the same thing using a formula. It's completely different to what Google has done which is to create an actual computer.
    But what's more surprising is that the experts didn't call out the whole thing and give the information I just did a 5 minute internet search to find out.

    DW News, please learn the definition of the term Quantum Supremacy.

    • @decus9544
      @decus9544 3 года назад +1

      @Mohamed A. Hussein Quantum Supremacy is the ability of a Quantum computer to perform calculations, generally speaking, faster than classical computers can. I say generally speaking because a quantum computer performing a specific set of quantum calculations better than classical computers doesn't tend to warrant the term, if that were the case, then multiple quantum computers would have achieved Quantum Supremacy already, it is most commonly to be considered to require a general advantage in computation across a wide array of types of operations over classical computers for it to apply. The Chinese researchers didn't claim this, thus DW News is misrepresenting the story. What I presume happened is that they said that have an advantage in quantum computing, which was misinterpreted as Quantum Advantage, which is synonymous with Quantum Supremacy. Quantum Advantage does not mean having an advantage over other countries, it means specifically the above, thus clearly there was a translation error and/ or the writer of the script simply didn't know the technical definitions to the above terms.

    • @decus9544
      @decus9544 3 года назад

      @Mohamed A. Hussein No quantum computers have reached quantum supremacy in a general sense, if they had, we'd see classical computers everywhere going the way of the dodo. Quantum supremacy is still several decades off.

      @Chapi Esteros You make a sound argument. High technology can☆ equate to increased prosperity, however, I recall a higher standard of living, all things considered, in America in previous decades sans informarion age tech. Increased porductivity failed to translate into meaningfully higher wages or a lower cost of living.
      My concern is that the focus of CCP technical advancement is military superiority as opposed to inmproved quality of life, though a case can be made that the two indirectly intersect during peacetime.

    • @Grenadier311
      @Grenadier311 3 года назад +1

      @Chapi Esteros I concur. The kicker lies in how that high tech is used, however. Does it lead inexorably towards a dystopia where the human spirit and individual freedom is crushed by technocratic governance or will it liberate? Will endeavoring to seek a military advantage through genetic modification and biotech, for example, result in a sensible parity or a grotesque and lopsided balance of power? I'm concerned about China's employment of high tech because the CCP appears to operate without a decent moral compass and boasts a history of egregious human rights abuses. Say what you will about America, and dark stains mar our modern historical record, but our technological advances have been shared with the world, especially with regard to medicine and agriculture, in a way that uplifted humanity. I'm not so optimistic about the PRC sharing its advancements without unpalatable strings attached, but perhaps my opinion of that nation hasn't recovered from the 300,000,000 forced abortions they perpetrated.
