    Impressive moments:
    • Everyone else is bundled-up and/or wearing a jacket - - and Matt is being a badass (as usual) in nothing more than a short-sleeve work shirt.
    • Rory, with his immeasurable experience of off-road recoveries, along with the torque of his big-block powered wrecker - simply idle up out of the hazard.
    • Rory's rig easily pulls ahead of Matt's rig in a roll-race, even though it's about 1,200 lbs. heavier.
    • Matt gives Rory full-credit as the recovery would have not been easy at all without the assistance of the wrecker.
    • Being able (once again) to view two of our favorite off-road icons collaborate on a recovery.

A lot of overlanding rigs are deceptively heavy too, and this guy had a pretty nicely outfitted rig. Water+mud+freezing+time+weight would surely have worked overnight to build up quite a lot of suction. I love watching Rory take advantage of the many options he built into Trail Mater. As a retired intensive care nurse you would be surprised on just how many babies were saved by putting them in ovens (the door was always open.) Premature babies can't regulate their heat and would die of hypothermia otherwise. The babies that usually didn't make it had breathing problems that 80+ years ago there wasn't anyway to cure. Lizzy walking on water and then doing cartwheels just shows off her talents. Matt really needs to get the transmission and transfer case working better together. Loved seeing you working with Rory.

I am always amused when I watch your videos. One of the things that amuses me the most is how these vehicles, which sometimes appear crude, are engineered and built from the ground up for a very specific purpose and how they go out and retrieve "Consumer" off roaders that are not. Run what you brung is clearly the way to go.
I am reminded of an incident that took place a few years back. A friend of mine, who lives in Ft. MacMurray Alberta Canada, had purchased and H2 Hummer with a very expensive price tag. He thought he could climb Everest with that thing. He had had it for about a week when he tried to ford a local river to get to an island and when about 200 feet offshore he high centred and could go neither forward or back. The local towing companies essentially said, "Not what we do and let us know how you make out." Now my friend was desperate to get this tank out of the river because he had told his wife he was going shopping which of course didn't involve any river crossings. He had heard of a fellow that did off road recovery so he gave him a call. When the fellow showed up he was about 25 and was driving a beat up old 1969 GMC that looked like it was totally piecemealed together with baling wire, bubble gum, tin foil, and spit. The kid surveyed the situation and immediately drove out to the H2. He tied his winch line to the trailer hitch, let out some slack, and backed out of the river to the bank pulling the H2 along with him. Took him all of 10 minutes. We had a good look at his rig and my friend asked how much it had cost him to build the rig up. He said he had spent about $40,000 on it and a few hundred hours of his own time. My buddy just shook his head and muttered, "Good gawd. Forty grand and some time to pull out my $106,000 go anywhere Hummer." The Hummer was sold off after about a year of poor performance and seven miles per gallon on a good day...............

    • @2200Z
      @2200Z 2 года назад

lol. "Go anywhere." There's a huge difference between the H1 and the H2. The H1 was based upon the HMMWV, or Humvee. It was manufactured at the same factory as the military's Humvee. The H2 sits on a Yukon/Tahoe/Silverado/Sierra/Suburban/Escalade chassis. It is a far cry from the H1. Your buddy could have picked up a fully-loaded Yukon Denali for about $50,000 brand new in 2008. The H2 was for those people that watched CSI Miami and had more money than brains.

We have crossed there twice, once in 2018 and again in 2019. In 2018 the folks that were buried there in their Jeep Rubicon were VERY happy to see us. Was a quick recovery with MaxTrax and his winch on my truck as an anchor. This area can be deceptive as it has multiple crossings which can change every year. We've personally not had any issues as we always scout out and walk the creek to find the best crossing possible. Just cause the GPS shows it crossing in a particular spot doesn't mean its the best spot to use. It pays to do some scouting, walk the crossing and ensure a smooth crossing.

Several years as a teenager riding Motorcycle trials taught me to walk before committing. When I was a young adult and had my first car (Peugeot 504) I used to go camping in areas most people used 4wd to access. I used to over pressure the spare tyre, drop a few lb of pressure on the driving wheels and use careful scouting to determine my path. Never got bogged once and went past numerous bogged 4WD on certain tracks caused by people stopping being tourists and then trapping others trying to rescue them using snatch ropes. Never understood why they either stopped in waterlogged sand trails or thought HP could rescue them. A few logs or a winch plus logs would have seen a quick and painless recovery. I used to sit in 2nd gear and around 40 km/hr on those kind of patches. Never jumped on throttle and if I lost traction would jump out chuck a few bits of wood down and get back up to speed with no wheel spin. River crossings I did not do as without 4WD or a gravel bottom a 2wd car is as good as stuck.

we've learned so much in this vid - sometimes winches ARE better than ropes, Trailmater walked the MORRvair in a rolling start (just no substitute for cubic inches), Lizzy thinks she's as tall as Trevor (watching them size up in the background of the outro was a hidden gem). Thanks for the great content.

Great scenery! - Thumbs up for the classic Detroit Iron - 454
What would Matt do if Rory was not there? Put as much static tension on the kinetic rope as permissible. Park it with all brakes locked. Bring/use a 'Highlifter' jack (or the like), and a few pieces of 1 foot square x 1.125" plywood (to serve as a base in mud). Jack the rear a few notches, wait a minute and repeat. The slow jacking should lift/dislodge the rear, and that would be evidenced by the vehicle creeping forward due to the rope's tension.

Very cool recovery Matt , even though you didn't get to try . Even better was the rolling start " Rorey " never took his eyes off you then he left you in the dust. Super nice truck , What a great mash up of different things going on. See you on the next one. Cheers.

I even got a chance to meet Matt, Rory and some of the crew a week ago, but I can't say I was able to contain my excitement and I kinda spazzed out. They were super cool about it though, really nice people. If you get the chance to meet them, plan what you are going to say before hand so you don't just babble like I did! Thanks crew, and I hope the Dew and Maverik snacks got put to good use!

Your tale of how Ed was born premature and had a shoe box in the oven as a bet hits close to home for me. I was born 3 months premature back in 1963. When my parents brought me home they used my dad's handkerchiefs as diapers and I too slept in a shoe box in the oven. Ed and I are "Box Brothers"!!! LOL

Same story with my grandmother. The doctor gave her to my great-grandfather in a shoebox, and he put her in the oven. This would have been around 1900 in rural Nevada, so not much else you could do at the time. I am also sure it would have been a wood burning stove..
