    Restoration is a balance-honoring what once was while preparing it for what’s to come. To restore is to see value in the past and, through precision, give it new purpose. It’s a reminder that all things fade, yet can be reborn, if only for a time.

    As far as I know, the metal parts are magnesium. Not aluminum. I believe if you try welding magnesium with aluminum rod you get very brittle welds, as well as being difficult to weld. Haven’t welded magnesium myself, but I read into it quite a bit. Magnesium welding rod is very expensive. Plus I don’t have a tig machine. I have a few saws need weld repairs.

    • @hbrestoration
      @hbrestoration  2 месяца назад +5

      Maybe you don't know, originally the manufacturer also painted the inside. Can't really paint over the rubber gasket layer. The piston part is quite damaged and should be replaced🥲

      @daniele3275 2 месяца назад +8

      @@hbrestorationTBH I understand the effort involved I do Restoration videos myself(@Dany_FIX_DIY)
      But there are a series of choices I'd avoided.
      Machined surfaces should not be painted, and nothing would be as strong as the original paint .
      About the welding failure, I might suggest you to play with AC balance, tungsten diameter, and an higher frequency this would help a lot.
      Of course the material itself might not be the easiest thing to weld I know that but if you might gently share with us your settings I might give you a better advice.
      I weld aluminum alloys practically every single day because I'm a machinist

    • @hbrestoration
      @hbrestoration  2 месяца назад +6

      This type of aluminum has a lot of impurities so it is difficult to weld. I tried more times than in the video and failed. But each successful weld is also very brittle.

    • @daniele3275
      @daniele3275 2 месяца назад +4

      @@hbrestoration yes I know that and sandblasting it to doesn't help, because it adds impurities into the material.
      We have problem by doing that at work too.
      But unfortunately many times you have no other choice as it can reach areas you wouldn't otherwise.
      I had success heating the part to make oils and such evaporate and wire brushing them off using a die grinder.
      Welder set up 60 to 70Hz to have yet penetration but also bit more of control, 60% negative AC balance
      Roughly 55A on these thicknesses work great, it takes longer to form a puddle but you reduce a lot the heat which is what causes it to become brittle
      10 litres per minute gas flow.
      They are rough settings you might need more or less current depending on how the workpieces dissipate heat but if you get a puddle in about 5 or 6 seconds you're spot on (it really should form in less than 3 but hence the problems up mentioned it's a good compromise)
      I keep the tungsten flush with the cup maybe barely picking out of it an half mm or so .
      It's very important on aluminum as you need to keep the tungsten cool and shield as best as you can the welding area

    Please don't go near an engine ever again.
    Painting inside of the case, not replacing bearings, reusing a scored up piston, not honing the bore, not replacing the reed valves, and using an impact to reassemble the engine.
    I saw you strip several of those bolts, btw.
    Also, never pick up a welder again. Im not a professional, but man, those were painful even for an amateur.
    You've made a wall hanger. You didn't "restore" anything.
