@@equivalentexchangeisalie5726 The statement carries a degree of truth, and it emphasizes the importance of personal motivation and responsibility in the coaching process. While a life coach can provide guidance, support, and strategies for personal and professional development, the client's commitment and motivation are crucial for achieving meaningful results.
A life coach is not a substitute for personal responsibility or the client's active engagement in the process. Successful coaching often involves a collaborative effort where the coach and client work together toward defined goals. The coach can offer insights, accountability, and tools, but the client's willingness to implement changes and stay motivated is fundamental to the coaching relationship.
However, it's essential to recognize that everyone's needs and preferences vary. Some individuals benefit significantly from the guidance and accountability a life coach provides, while others may find motivation from within or through other means. The effectiveness of life coaching can depend on factors such as the client-coach relationship, the coach's expertise, and the client's commitment to the process.

To all of the naysayers I ask this...do you think a clinical psychologist or therapist is the right person to go to if you want to plan a change in careers? If you want to navigate successful dating if it’s been awhile? If you are looking for someone to help with accountability to go after a goal or dream? If you are recently divorced and looking to create a life that makes you truly happy? None of these things need to dredge up the past or heal traumas. That’s why we have coaches. Yes, a friend would do if they are trained in things like motivation, planning, self reflection and asking the questions that inspire change. Coaches have immense value. Yes there are charlatans, but you’ll find some of those with PhDs as well. How many people do you know that have spent years or decades on a therapists sofa, with no real progress? If a coach isn’t moving you toward your goal expediently you need to find a new coach. Same can’t be said about therapy.

I think the draw to life coaches is that they seem more relatable and down to earth. People tend to be drawn to individuals they can relate to. No, they may not have a degree (all though some colleges offer degrees in life coaching now), but they have that person's ear because they aren't using big fancy words to get to the root of the problem. Therapists intimidate a lot of people. And to be honest, book smarts doesn't equal people smarts. Some therapists seem to care more about their title than the people they are charged with helping. I have seen it with 2 of the therapists I have seen and one of the therapists my son with Aspergers has seen. She was more concerned about my son touching her "therapy dog" than his issues. Smh. Life experiences trump a book smart person most days. These people want to talk to someone that they can relate to. Sorry if that bothers a lot of the therapists, but, I have learned a lot more from people who have experience with my problems than I have with the 3 therapists I have met. I felt like I was talking to a person who cared rather than a person who has memorized case studies and theories. And , honestly, some of the wisest people I know don't have a degree. They have life experience. I don't say all of this to downplay someone who went to school and earned their master's. Not at all. But if the human element is missing from your practice, there will be some who will be turned off. We just went through a rough year with this virus. People want a true connection more than ever.

I have never seen a client through a rigid clinical lens. And neither have any of my colleagues. The flaws that you have described from your experiences seem to call back to a time when therapists were very clinical, cold, and lacking humanity. Most therapists today understand that this is not only impractical but potentially harmful. I don't know enough about life coaching to say if it's good or bad. However the lack of governing boards and universal oversight in the field is troubling to say the least. You say that therapists are only in it for the money and status, which is not totally wrong (trust me I've met a few) but I could say the same for life coaches. I felt more like they were the middle man and didn't necessarily have the experience needed. A lot of charletons in this field and a lot of woo woo. I found it much more effective to take that money I invested in life coaching and pay a teacher to teach me to have the specific skills to get ahead in business.

Nothing would be further from the truth. My partner was sucked in an lost USD '000s. My partner, on realizing how much $$$ they had lost ended up trying to take their own life. I thought life coaching was a scam for a long time. Why not read a book or talk with friends to support you ? This us what I was thinking
But I discovered that a lot of people do not have that have that support. A lot of people need outside help overcoming some challenges. Sometimes friends can give you the worst advice because they have their own interest in mind or are scared to see you get a head, even parents will do this.
I am not a coach but I have 50 years of experience behind me and a lot of younger people are coming to me to be their cheerleader and coach. I see how it helps them and I am happy to do that because growing up I didn't have that. I absolutely don't have everything perfect in my life but at least I can offer encouragement, advice for others when they are looking for it.

At the end of the day, a legitimate life coach has the skills to add value and transform someone’s life above mediocrity.
From experience, people who benefit the most from coaching are committed to making a major shift in their life. They refuse to make excuses or settle for mediocrity.
People who don’t benefit from coaching don’t trust themselves. Therefore, they don’t trust life coaches and think it’s a scam. This thought process in itself is a limiting belief that often shows up in other areas of someone’s life.
If you are looking for a coach, hire someone you get a good feel for, can trust, and can afford.
*As hard as it is, try not to assume just because a coach isn’t for you or charges a premium they are a scam. You have to realize every coach isn’t for everyone and everyone isn’t for every coach. There are people with a wide range of reasons for hiring a coach and income.

In short, as a coach you aren’t helping people like a therapist or psychiatrist would. A coach is generally helping others overcome life issues that the coach has already experienced. There’s no diagnostics involved. No medication involved. You’re literally giving the other person insight on what you, the coach has already been through. How you’ve dealt with whatever the issue at hand is and the outcome. In return that client pays you for the knowledge and time spent. Which equals value.

I have been coaching Pro Bono. Majority of my clients are just looking for someone who has no vested interest in their life, will not judge them, that allows them to talk about their desires in life. By asking them open questions it gives them the ability to open their minds to what is possible or how they can discover their own solutions.
I would also be very cautious about seeking out a very young life coach or for instance a very young Financial Planner with no personal experience.
One of my concerns about the industry is that it seems to feed on itself.

The world is not black and white and in reality, every person on this planet has almost something to offer in a coaching scenario... it's just knowing what you have to offer and how much you truly understand/care.
You can go the textbook route, but sorry, you will simply be following robotic format in many scenarios! I'm talking from experience and as a therapist or coach, you should never sacrifice who you truly are, just to blend into programs heavily, because ppl have said you must be qualified.

Like I don't have any life coaches calling me, but I do get scammers. lol If someone (who is mentally sound) wants to find a consultant/life coach, they should be allowed to reach out and be okay to pay up if that person has a skill or quality they want to replicate. People who hire life coaches are usually not struggling with money if they're paying $$$ to talk to someone, which is ultimately what the service is: to talk to someone. Notice how CNBC did not interview anyone that was a victim of some life coach stealing their money? This seems like a non-issue. It's making news out of no news. Like duh, go talk to a therapist if you're depressed or having self-worth issues instead of a life coach. Lots of us parents dont have a plaque on the wall. We are just as qualified! Experience, knowledge trumps a non experienced, cant think out of the box-type person.

Ok but my parents coached me with poverty trauma, self esteem issues, and an outdated idea that if you work hard you will be rewarded.
Parents aren't qualified to "coach" their kids, and should send their children to therapy rather than filling their heads with their own ideology or "no blood no sympathy" mindset.

There are therapists out there who are licensed and yet, have no idea what they’re doing. Quite a number of them stop their own therapy. They bring their own unresolved stuff into a session.

What people need to understand is.
    1. There are good and bad apples in literally EVERY PROFESSION!
    2. All opinions are suggestive based on your own bias,, experience, and expectations. It does not make your right or wrong but it can hinder you from seeing thr full picture.
    3. Degrees DO NOT determine character!
I have multiple degrees, that tells you nothing of my honesty, my amout of care for others, or even my level of ability. Simply says that I am trained to do a thing based on exams, reading, and maybe field practice.
But people think degrees dictate character, sincerity, transparency, honesty, and so forth. They don't. The individual does that and in ALL professions there are good ones, bad ones, and a mix in the middle!
I've had several friends, associates and relatives who had bad experiences with PhD therapists compared to a handful that have had positive experiences.
Everything from being ghosted, the specialist making inappropriate jokes, yelling at the client and one crying through the session so hard they cut it short. All people in those scenarios refused to seek therapy after that.
Think they don't question the legitimacy of therapeutic help? Are they right because of that? What about people with bad experiences with doctors, lawyers, cops, teachers, this race or that... does that mean ALL people in those categories are thanwrong, bad, scam artists in the like?? NOPE.

Life coaches help people get the most out of their lives. They provide advice and guidance in a variety of areas such as work, relationships, and personal development. A life coach can help you set goals, manage your time effectively, and even tell you how to use your talents to make the most of your life. Life coaches are available in person or online, so it is easy to find a coach that is right for you.

I appreciate the point that not all counseling approaches focus on digging into your past. Solution-focused brief therapy is one example. It probably has the most similarities to life coaching. Just something to keep in mind especially if you’re concerned about finding someone with verifiable credentials and ethical standards they must abide by.

Life coaching is not like anything else, its the life's best and only way to succeed.
You don't become a coach because of the money or that you want to be like Tony Robbins.
Its something you can't do anything to stop you.
I am 62yrs,my fasting blood sugar is 71,my bp is 130/80,65kg weight,i have no black spots on any of my skin, not bald, exercise regularly, read read and read everything, stopped telling ppl where i live and using toyota corolla 2005 despite having SUV,eat twice everyday mostly meat(carnivore) pray for my enemies more than my friends and family.Take advantage of failures, mistakes, disappointment, don't use glasses, drive at night, urinate freely without any blocked,no premature aging still grow hairs and visit Babar shop every week, dose not have ED,head shaped like babes no bumps or ridges sideways,

May not be required to have a degree or MH licensing to do coaching, but there are many who do! If you need coaching for Executive Functions for example, you may prefer someone with experience having it, training in adhd, and a lengthy experience in a MH area.

Honestly I appreciate the idea of life coaches b/c they genuinely give you an actual plan on what to actually do to improve your life.
My history with therapists has just been them listening to me and giving me cliche psychotherapy advice, which never truly helps.

I think the same thing. Just calling it bad therapy doesn’t capture how common an experience it is. I had one positive therapy experience in my youth and multiple negative experiences as an adult.
I doubt I’ll seek therapy again TBH. And I’ve tried counseling, therapy, psychotherapy and a psychologist. I can’t have that bad of luck with the “bad” ones.

tell me if all writers got a degree, i know the answer is not all so like they write as it pleases them and reap whatever fruit; them generating money or their readers finding amusement or knowledge in their literature. it is 100% their choice. i know that not all of us could find their life's purpose or be successful without any form of guided, which we picked up from unlearned people so let this rest i think.

I see the most value in CBT/therapy, if you:
    (1) have issues opening up/self-reflecting,
    (2) have a mental health diagnosis/condition, or
    (3) have no one in your life that you trust is safe, respectful and unbiased enough for you to open up to.
If those things aren't true for you, meeting with a therapist isn’t always fruitful.
Now I've never had a life coach BUT I have derived ZERO value from any therapist I've met with, just because there’s a lot of sitting around pontificating on things you already know.

    • @a004

there are many different types of therapies, maybe you haven't found the best one for you yet - but if you want someone to tell you what to do, then yeah that's not what therapy is for

Coaching is basically CBT. I agree with you in 100% It works exactly as you pointed out. That's why it doesn't work for me (I had a coach). I also tried psychodynamic therapy - also a bad idea in my case, because it was me talking - psychotherapist listening. No advice, no guidance, no compassion.... totally pointless. Maybe I had a bad luck.
