Julia: An Incredible Pig

  • March 3, 2019 marks one year since Julia pig’s passing. It took us a full year to produce this video, because, truthfully, we were in mourning. Each animal at Farm Sanctuary is beloved, but Julia holds a special place in our hearts.
This is a true story, and the truth of animal agricultural can be ugly: Pregnant Julia had been kicked, electrocuted, and dragged by her ears at an Upstate NY pork farm until a worker blew the whistle. Just hours after her rescue by Farm Sanctuary, gave birth to 17 piglets.
Julia’s story is one of strength, resilience, motherly love, and most importantly, #ThePowerofSanctuary. Help us celebrate her legacy by watching this special tribute.

I'll never understand how people can be intentionally cruel to animals. I'm so happy to know that Julia lived a good life for the rest of her days.

The people who mistreat and don't care about animals do it because they look at cows, pigs, and sheep as dumb, mindless things which are only good for providing meat. They either don't realize or don't care (I know that some of it's the latter) that animals have feelings, emotions, and experiencing life. Just because their minds don't work on the level of an intelligent adult person's mind does NOT mean that it's not a valuable mind. And I'm specifically saying "intelligent adult person" instead of just saying "person" because not everyone's mind is the same. A mentally handicap person's mind would be on the same level as an animal's mind by these people's logic, saying that animals are less worthy because their minds aren't intelligent enough to learn to speak languages, drive a car, etc. It's all ignorant thinking that a living being's worthiness to live is based on intelligence and abilities. Seriously, that's the excuses these people who don't care about saving the animals use, "they're too dumb to be worth being kept alive", it's total ignorance. A pig or a lamb still has a mind, it doesn't matter if they haven't learned to speak or operate machinery, they still have a living mind, they are still being, still experiencing life, still feeling happy, sad, tired, hungry, excited, relaxed. And the last word, relaxed, is something these animals definitely appear to be more once they're at a sanctuary. That alone is proof enough that animals experience life and experience emotions. If they are doing anything, they are experiencing. If they are hungry, they're experiencing hunger. When they're eating, they're experiencing satisfying their hunger. If these animals were mindless like these slaughterhouse supporters, workers, etc. say, then they wouldn't be getting hungry, tired, or even moving at all, because to do any of that, you need a mind and you need to experience in order to decide to walk or move, you need a mind to experience hunger in order to decide to eat, etc.. And as long as any being is experiencing, their mind is valuable. And, they have every right to keep their valuable mind and every right to keep experiencing. Sorry for rambling, it's just how I see all this and how I cannot understand anyone saying that an animal's mind is worthless

My buddy (cat) of 20 years passed away this morning and I have been crying uncontrollably. Molly, the pig me and my roommate took in from a family that wanted to put her down is shaken by my crying and is being unusually sweet and sympathetic today. I think she is going to get me through the next couple weeks. Julia sounds like she was a beautiful person too. Those piglets were lucky to have such a wonderful mom. I wish everyone could see them for who they really are.

When I was a little kid, and I'm sure other little kids have also questioned which are the meanest most cruel vicious animals in the world? Crocodiles? Sharks? Lions? Grizzly bears? Poisonous snakes? Wasps/hornets? Nope, many of us later learn that the answer's not any of them, the answer's people. Not all people, but some people are more cruel and vicious than any crocodiles, sharks, snakes, bears, or venomous creatures in the world.

That sounded like a woman. It's horrible and cruel nevertheless. Why do people seem to torture and abuse pigs worse than any other animal!? And pigs deserve it the least because they are usually so happy, friendly, and affectionate with people when they haven't been made frightened of them. Pigs are one of the smartest animals, yet still very simple and have such simple pleasures. All pigs need to be happy is to be placed on a farm where they have space to move around, kind attention, and to be completely free from being harmed. Add a mud waller and belly scratches to that and the pigs will be very blissfully happy. It's all simple pleasures and not asking for much. Yet, so many pigs are denied that. They're locked in tiny crates, get physically abused, and forced to an early very painful death. It's heartbreaking that that is what so many pigs get. It is not asking that much to give them their simple pleasures; space, kindness, and no harm

When the video focused on how Julia looked when she was initially rescued broke me. While I feel so sad for her at the same time I feel so warmed and grateful you guys gave her a second chance. Seeing the pictures where it looks like her babies were kissing on her face (towards the end of the video) was tooooo precious!! THANK YOU, all of you who run what you angels on earth have going. There will never be enough thank you’s to people like you guys.

This brings tears to my eyes. I can't imagine ever eating pork (or beef, chicken, dairy) again. I started back on a whole food plant based diet about 6 weeks ago for health reasons, then saw (not for the first time) footage of the practices of animal torture, so now I'm eating plant based for the animals as well as for my health.

Can't say I haven't gone off course, mainly for convenience sake, since my previous note, but haven't had any meat in almost 6 months, No excuses. Went to a sanctuary several weeks ago, I think that helped my resolve.

Julia was beautiful 🐷💚 such a gentle pig who deserved better, as they all do. Factory farm workers seem to have deep issues, they enjoy hurting animals and should not be employed on farms of any kind. I wish every consumer of factory farmed animals could see this video. Most don’t want to know, even good people I know who still eat pigs and other animals on these farms. I just don’t understand why. Cried 😭 seeing this, but my conscience is clear, as I don’t eat pigs or animals. 🙏🐷💚🌈

    • @EmilyRhinier
      @EmilyRhinier 5 лет назад +7

I hear this same statement from so many people, but it is incorrect. Being a vegetarian means you still contribute to animal abuse in many horrible ways. Cows are forcefully impregnated constantly throughout their short lived (4 to 5 year) lives, and each and every one of their babies are taken from them immediately after birth, so that humans can steal their milk. If they have a boy it will be raised for a few weeks (about 6) confined to a very small area, then killed for humans to have "veal". The females born are raised to endure the same torture as their mothers.
Mother chickens are forced to live their lives in tiny battery cages, bred to lay so many eggs their bodies can't handle it. Male baby chickens are thrown into a meat grinder once they are born because they are considered "waste" by the egg industry.
The meat, dairy and egg industries are the most cruel, fowl, discusting places on the planet. And even the most "humanely" raised animals are still send off to be killed at a slaughterhouse. An animal that trusts you, you just send to be murdered in a death house. And yes, animals can sense it coming which is why they struggle to LIVE. Humans have zero right to take the lives of any living sentient being on this planet.
Veganism is the only way to be the most compassionate to all the animals. 🌱🐷🐓🦃🐮

What I've noticed about pigs, such as Julia, is that as much as pigs suffer horribly in those horrible places where Julia was at before being rescued, pigs are actually fairly resilient animals and will recover and become much happier and more comfortable eventually once in a much safer and happier place. Julia became another joyfully happy sanctuary pig wallowing in her simple pleasures, which is what most pigs do very well once in a safe and happy home. It's just what Julia did once she knew she was in her safe happy home to stay, in spite of her dreadful beginings. It will still take a little time though before rescued pigs will realize that they're in their nicer place to stay. They need to first start recognizing the pattern of the new people they're with will keep giving them the same kindness every day, and they start noticing that there's no harm going on in their new environment, and they'll adjust and relax and will now know that they're safe. It can probably take weeks or even months, like it did with Julia. But soon, Julia was joyously running around, playing with her piglets, dipping in the mud without a worry in the world. It's because pigs have such simple pleasures. Thank God Julia had a time period in her life where she got to indulge in her simple pleasures

4:30 - 4:40 - that pig was in heaven, she was in her mud pit, she had her babies by her also enjoying the mud pit, she knew she was somewhere free from harm and where she was loved, and at 4:00 - 4:07 she was also joyously happy having her pigs nursing off her. Pigs, including Julia often experience great joy in the mud, and with their piglets, and this pig had both now. It melts my heart how this pig who was once suffering in terror and agony at the horrible factory farm spending every minute either stuffed in tiny crates or getting physically abused, was now experiencing joyful bliss. This was before she sadly got deathly ill, but thank God that she had a period of time in her life where she experienced real joy

And the saddest part about all of this is that every single pig in that factory next to her ended up on someone’s plate. They could have been just like Julia, but someone wanted sausage on their pizza. And people call vegans “extremists” because WE WANT TO SAVE ANIMALS?!?!

4:31 - 4:39 - That pig must feel in heaven. She knows she's now permanently in a safe home totally free from harm, she's wallowing freely in the mud and water, and she's doing it side by side with her piglets. There really is nothing more that a pig could want. Pigs really have very simple pleasures. It's not really asking for much to supply a pig with a muddy pond, getting to be with her piglets, and being on a farm where there's loving attention and nobody there to ever harm the pig. That is really all a pig needs to be happy.
It makes it that much sadder how so many pigs are denied that and are instead stuck in tiny crates where they cannot move, getting regular physical abuse and torture, and then being forced to an early painful agonizing death.
It seems that right now, about 80% of the world's pigs live horrible suffering factory farm lives then get slaughtered painfully, 15% live easier small farm lives but still end up going to slaughter, and only about 5% live long happy safe lives in sanctuaries and are never harmed. I pray for a world where 80% of the world's pigs live in the sanctuaries, preferably more

People look at this and laugh whenever vegans are talking about this stuff, yet whenever they see something nowhere near as bad with a dog, they’re like “oh that person deserves to die” “oh that person deserves to rot in hell”. So this is just an example of speciesism.
