  • This week on 'Has It Aged Well?' we're discussing a beloved 90s classic and one of Shah Rukh Khan's early films: Kundan Shah's 'Kabhi Haan Kabhi Naa' starring Shah Rukh, Suchitra Krishmnamoorthy, Deepak Tijori and Naseeruddin Shah amongst many others. Joining Abbas and Urjita making his 5th appearance on the show is crowd favourite Snayhil Aneja. Topics discussed include: The ideal 'underdog' character, the somewhat dubious accents in the film, the fantastic music, what is the r/niceguys phenomena? and should KHKN should have been a gangster movie instead?

    Guys ,the sequal to kabhi Han kabhi na is already made.
    The movie is called anjaam ,where Shahrukh Khan is pursuing wife of Deepak Tijori and ends up killing Deepak Tijori in the process .

    27:26 Abbas is right about SRK winning the popular choice award for Baazigar and the critics’ choice award for Kabhi Haan Kabhi Naa in 1994. The Filmfare jury chose to award SRK for Kabhi Haan Kabhi Naa despite it being unreleased at that point in time. He was nominated the next year for the same film in the popular choice category (but lost to the overwhelming favourite, Nana Patekar, for Krantiveer).

    What Sunil did is something many boys would do to get his crush during his school days due to naiveness, but the movie also showed that sunil made mistakes and got punished for it..

    the movie's far ahead of its times, in my opinion. the platonic relationships shown are so refreshing. anna as the only female member of the gang has the respect and support of the male members. Sunil is shown as a refreshingly 'human' protagonist. isn't over the top bad or good...just very 'human'. movie doesn't have a stereotypically happy ending. i also somehow feel goans aren't shown as poorly as they usually were, in bollywood at the time.

    With Urjita on this one. The character was grey. It's a grown-ass character - not innocent, not bachha or bechara - made his choices. It doesn't make him a villain, but doesn't absolve him of his guilt, either. And it's a good thing actually that he was a grey character. Real people are grey. White or black toh sirf zebra crossing hoti hai!

    • @laser3210

      I think the correct term is flawed character.

    • @Shubhrosur
      @Shubhrosur 3 месяца назад

      He could've have been called grey if he had been scheming and plotting it all. Every step he takes was very impulsive and pretty much improvised. And the fact that he lets Anna go in the end shows his growth over the film.

  • @laser3210
    @laser3210 3 месяца назад +2

    Sunil is a flawed character who lies a lot but is nice, not negative or grey. He is very close to reality as many of us have met such people in real life. Such characters are in fact rare in Bollywood and that’s where this film hits a home run. The closest I can think about is Hunterr where the main lead is flawed but again a nice person.

    43:03 : delhi boy said the most delhi boy thing ever. just because a girl talks to you nicely, it does NOT mean she likes you romantically. "bhaav dey rahi thi" bolke misbehaviour justify karte rehte hain ladke. "i picked her up" "we hung out so much" blah blah - like urjita says, it's basic friendship stuff! not a means to an end

  • @anilatarannum

    It was honestly quite ridiculous of Abbas saying towards the end that SRK's character slut shaming the actress was okay just because it came from a "good intent" and because he had "exhausted all other options". That's the excuse stalkers give man, that's the excuse the morons give who slit their wrists to "get the girl". Just because someone apologized does not mean they didn't do it in the first place. Of course they're better off than someone doing something shitty and not even feeling remorse, but they aren't absolved just because they apologized. And that's why Urjita's characterizarion of him as Grey was spot on. There are shades of grey. Yes, SRK was grey in Baazigar, but that was a darker shade of grey. Just because SRK in KHKN wasn't murdering people doesn't mean he was completely innocent. He was also grey, just more on the lighter side.
    I hope Abbas didn't resort to this nonsense in his younger days, it felt that he was projecting a lot. And even if he did, I hope he sees how wrong it was.

    It’s definitely a product of its time given that this late 80s-early 90s simple vibe doesn’t carry for the people who didn’t watch it then, even if it’s close to our hearts. Abbas rating this higher than QSQT is the same as Imran Khan not finding Qsqt dated

Anand L Rai's previous film Tanu Weds Manu is a better example for both the nice guy Urjita says and the portrayal Snehal talks about of someone doing nice things without expectations.

      This is pure justification. Urjita only meant "galti chahe choti hi kyun na ho, galti GALTI hi hoti hai" and whose to say that sunil wouldn't do something like this in the future (and for the sake of sorry-ass redemption, he'll apologize again) or maybe he wouldn't. that's why it makes him a grey character.

      I know I've done my fair share of "galatis" and I'm ashamed of them but I can't change the past, I can only try to be better. Good people are capable of making mistakes.
      And also it's a coming of age film, the crux of this genre is the protagonist making mistakes the try to be better upon realizing their mistakes as the film progresses.

      @@bijoybiswas1932 that’s the thing - we’re all shades of grey. some are lighter versions and some darker. i can tell from my experience that my teenage behavioural patterns have had subtle but huge impact on how i lived my life in my 20s. There are things that i still get wrong even then and even now. Because a coming-of-age films has to end at simplistic, high note (generally optimistic), they miss out on this aspect. According to jesse armstrong (Writer of succession), people don’t really change. Hence, we find the sub text of succession so impactful. And, there’s ample of research in psychology that proves this very point. So, when urjita points that out, she ain’t wrong.

    i think suni;'s character is an emotionally stunted guy who isnt savvy (jhaantu) and his grey ness is cos of that jhantu-ness and not cos he is a bad person. as guys growing up in the 90s, we never had the vocab to confess our feelings and that made our infatuations seem like "mohabbat" to us, for every girl we liked. mujhe crush hai, i like her but not like like her, i wanna date her, lets see where it goes ye sab thha hi nahin. so its that much more difficult to walk away from a girl. and a girl that hasnt explicitly said no. aur uske baad the child wala analogy works for his bad actions.

    2ndly - whatever Sunil did in this movie was to win over Anna and because he loves her so much that he can do anything for her. So to get her even if he has to ruin her name for him it’s fine. Coz he will still marry her.
    3rdly - Shahrukh in this movie grows to be a successful guy with his talent by earning form the band and that shows that he’s poor but talented enough to take care of anything he wants in life.
