Obligatory comment for RUclips engagement to encourage the algorithm to show this video to as many people as possible I really enjoyed the weird and wonderful world of plants
As always I was hooked, but the plant that lives for 2000 years or more blew my mind. It’s incredible what nature is capable of creating. Thanks for the great 👍🏼 video and sharing of information
I love the weird plants series 😃 It's just amazing how all these species developed in nature and survive and thrive in sometimes harsh conditions, the Welwitschia is especially fascinating 🤩 As another weird plant I would recommand the Hoya spatioides. And just as a tip: In the botanical names of plants only the genus has a capital letter, for example Monotropa (genus) uniflora (species).
hello, I love your content thank you for it. I saw Ghost Pipes while walking at a state park by the Mississippi river where I live in the USA. They were so fascinating to see. I took tons of pictures. They live by connecting with the fungi that are connected to tree roots. So indirectly they feed from the trees via fungi. our local conservation department states that the flower rarely survives transplanting because of this complicated method of growth and nourishment.
Do get a welwitschia mirabilis. I have one that is over 50 years old. It’s older than me and the most expensive plant in my collection. Thank you for making these fun videos.
Great video! Just referring to your comment about Alocasia amazonica - it is not native to anywhere. It is a hybrid from Miami in the 1950’s. It was produced in a garden centre called Amazonica hence the name. 😊
I haven't watched all videos yet so maybe these are already mentioned! I immediately thought of the Merano moss balls, selaginella lepidophylla, fig trees and ginkgo trees (both the pollination process:))
I have actually seen some monotropa uniflora in nature! They are so beautiful and weird looking! I even got to see a bumblebee pollinating a group of them, which was cool to see.
Very cool plants! Always interesting to hear about unusual plants :) My favorite weird plant is the diascorea elephantipes, such a great plant to grow.
The first time I saw ghost pipes in the woods I was so confused. I didn't know if this was a mushroom-colored plant or a plant-shaped mushroom or if I had somehow missed an alien spaceship flying around and planting seeds.
That first alocasia was giving me very ill vibes as well. I feel like if it had a voice it would be saying please end my suffering 😅😅 I am glad though that poaching was mentioned in this video, as it can be quite the concern with many of those very rare looking plants!
I have tons of ghost pipe that grows on my property. The indigenous people uses it for pain relief. My mother has actually picked it and put it in alcohol to make a tincture. It turns the alcohol blue and it helps with pain! I’m in Ontario, Canada :)
Ghost pipe is edible in small quantities, but mostly it’s used medicinally. Indigenous North American peoples have used it for anxiety and pain relief for centuries
Weird houseplant I just discovered --the Pickle Plant (Kleinia Stapeliiformis) ! It's a succulent. I'm sure most people have heard of it, maybe I'm late to the game, but succulents are so diverse I'd never heard of this one before and I always enjoy being introduced to a new plant friend. The only thing that makes me uneasy, is things like the helmet orchid. I think certain endangered or hard to find species are best left in their natural environment.
On Weleitchia Mirabillis, technically a tree (ones that produces pinecone, described as an upside down tree with roots being the tree part), and a lot of its growth would be underground (it has deep roots to find warer with). Also the two leaves it has technically is not a seed leaf since it does start with this false leaves called cotyledon. There is a place is Tuscan, AZ what seems to regularly carry them, for those of us in the US. I’ve tried to grow some with seeds but getting it not be moldy, thanks to the oil that the seed skin produces, so I wouldn’t recommend getting a seed. They are also not succulent like, as in they don’t store water in its body?, so they need to be watered as needed (unlike succulent that you should allow to dry completely in between)
13:18 - I’m lucky. I do a lot of hiking in the north east US and we see the Ghost Pipe growing naturally along the trails. It’s somewhat common to see.
The helmet orchid reminded me that there is another helmet orchid worthy of mention, Corybas Fimbriastus, commonly called Fringed Helmet Orchid, native to eastern Australia. It's not as sweet looking as C. circinatus, in fact it looks a bit creepy.
I have the alocasia Loco. It was a starter so it's been growing pretty slow. But looks like it's going to start pushing leaves pretty regular now. And sizing up.
I can't remember if you've said this one before but Sinocrassula Yunnanensis is the *strangest* plant I've seen, ever. When it's young, it looks like a black hedgehog, but as it grows, it can grow into the shape of a wall. They can grow absolutely massive (like, tree canopy height) and they have these strange flesh-coloured inflorescence too. They can be grown indoors, and then can flower at a young age, so you can get their whackiness inside as well. It honestly looks like it comes from a different planet. Like... it's so strange, everything from it's leaf colour, to it's growth pattern, to it's flowers, to it's height- It just makes no sense in my head.
There is actually a species of Monotropa in the UK. The technical term for what these plants do is mycoheterotrophy, meaning basically parasitizing fungi that are in turn forming a symbiosis with trees. There are also other plants that do that but still have chlorophyll for supplemental (if you will) photosynthesis.
Ok Claire! Scratch what I said about you getting a Mother of Thousands Plant! I did Love mine! Years Ago! However, I was unaware of the Toxicity of this Cool Plant!!! Not worth the Worry of anybody or pets dying! 😮
Do you already know the Lithops? They mostly look like little brains! I got one in a cute little halloween pumpkin pot and I'm planning to buy a skull shaped pot for the little guy
Yes I have both colors of the 1000 babies. The green one is huge. The baby's drop. And start growing in days. The pink one is small. So will see. But those have babies already
Thank you for your interesting videos! I enjoy your videos a lot, especially this type :) Corybas is hard to grow for me! They are a terrarium type tuberous orchids which may sit for a year and do nothing and sprout only when they get the right temp/amount of light. I struggle with mine.
The second plant, the one that looks like it has sugar sprinkles seems to be popular with succulent growers. The Helmet orchid 💕, I am an orchid person. There are some orchid growers that actually do grow some species of this; not sure about the one you discussed. Mother of thousands, is considered invasive where I live (California).
Hi, i AM from Poland, and i have "mother of thousands"... And nowdays, it's one of most creepy plant I have 🤣🤣 every little one new baby have those white roots, and it's look like some monster plant which eat people. 🤣🤣🙉
ghost pipe is used in traditional medicine in north America, Im not familiar with what its used for but I'm sure that's why its sold for herbal medicine use in the UK as well.
Hi Claire! Thankyou for another AWESOME Video! I have owned a Mother of Thousands Plant Years ago! I Loved it very Much! It grew so Tall, up to my ceiling, And grew across the top of my ceiling! With many many Babies at the Base that grew, dropped Babies, they grew! Lol The Babies will just root anywhere. Looking for someplace to root! Tis definitely a Fun Plant! I havn't seen them here in Ontario, Canada for Years! If you can get your hands on one I know you would have lots of Fun with this Plant! ❤️🌿🐾
"Houseplants are no longer just for decoration, but also for surprise! 😄 Who would have thought I’d have a ‘green buddy’ that looks like it's from a plant planet? 🌿👽 #WeirdButILoveIt!"
I thought that I was all alone because I don’t like variegation for the most part. There are a few I like but frequently think they look sickly. Much prefer the original of most plants.
The mother of thousands was the very first plant I've owned back in my elementary school time. It really reproduces like a weed 😂 once you own one, you soon will have thousands more.
I had a Mother of Thousands for about two years. I bought it from a vide grenier (car boot sale) for a few euros. But then it flowered, and died :-( I do have two or three babies growing but that's all.
Hi Claire hope ur well sorry this isn't about weird plants. Just brought a load of alocasia and as you can guess I have pests😢 out of all the predatory mites companies you have used which company would you say you prefer??
Oh god no! Don't you instagram plantaholics ruin my orchid and succulent hobby too by inflating prices to ridiculous heights. Just keep on growing those beautiful variegated aroids and nice white ghost Euphorbias.

@@NaomiKFCHutchin that's nice of you if we continue this in the comments it will show more
+1!!
Awww this is so lovely!!
Lmao the long diatribe about poaching followed by “…but yeah…it REALLY looks like lips” absolutely GOT me 😂
12:58 we call it the ghost pipe it’s out in the woods in my backyard. When you actually see it, it sparkles.
Oh, lucky you! I can’t see it being a successful houseplant though…🤔
@@grannyplants1764 no it likes to be underneath the dense forest and I don’t think it would do very good in the house
That hat orchid is gorgeous 😍. I would love that plant but I’m happy to look at it in photos thriving in its natural habitat
As always I was hooked, but the plant that lives for 2000 years or more blew my mind. It’s incredible what nature is capable of creating. Thanks for the great 👍🏼 video and sharing of information
I'm a HUGE fan of "different looking" plants! They keep my eyes excited every time I look at my collection

Ooooh thanks so much for the recommendation! It's on the list!
I think Benji grows one of those Welwitschia and he makes it look so cool.
Amazing I will check him out (I may have got my hands on some seeds, so I need ALL the tips!)

The helmet orchid is totally amazing 😀🇨🇦
I have been loving these series, so many odd and cool plants out there

Oh wow! Did you grow yours from seed?
Great video! Just referring to your comment about Alocasia amazonica - it is not native to anywhere. It is a hybrid from Miami in the 1950’s. It was produced in a garden centre called Amazonica hence the name. 😊
Ahh my mistake! Thank you for correcting me
Love these kind of videos that you make, I find new plants that I put on my wish list ❤😊 Hope you’re having a great day💕
Thank you so much!
check the bulbophyllum orchids, some have moving petals trat tremble when the flowers are moved and ie the medusae one looks weird
I haven't watched all videos yet so maybe these are already mentioned! I immediately thought of the Merano moss balls, selaginella lepidophylla, fig trees and ginkgo trees (both the pollination process:))
Hello from northern Michigan! I love love love this series!!! Plants are so amazing.

Love the new background! Hello Joli!
The bird poop Alocasia resembles the creature from Alien in one of those pictures showing the veination. (sp.)
Ghost pipe is edible in small quantities, but mostly it’s used medicinally. Indigenous North American peoples have used it for anxiety and pain relief for centuries
How incredible!
These are so fun. So many cool/odd plants out there. :P
Whenever i have to choose between top gear ( my favourite show) or claiiiire i pick you my lovely

I own a butterfly plant(oxalis family) and have been in love. Never seen it spoken about on any other page !
There are some very interesting types of orchid out there, I'd recommend checking out some bulbophyllums. For example the bulbophyllum arfakianum.
Hi Claire! Can you reverse the order of the videos in the playlist so that "play all" begins with the first in series? Thanks!

I am so early! I love this series please keep it up! weird plants all the way
I have three kinds of drocera. They are the hardest working plants I own.
I can't remember if you've said this one before but Sinocrassula Yunnanensis is the *strangest* plant I've seen, ever.

Love editing Clare😂 I was thinking the same from
Some of the IG pics longish leaves twirling down, looked really nice. Andy.
Thank you!!
I just saw a corm for an Alocasia Venom being sold in a local group for $130 which is a lot less but still sticker shocked! 😱😱😱

Love alocasia Venum! I absolutely can't afford it yet but it is perfectly weird. I have an alocasia loco that is a bit similar and strange
Ok Claire! Scratch what I said about you getting a Mother of Thousands Plant!
I did Love mine! Years Ago!
However, I was unaware of the Toxicity of this Cool Plant!!! Not worth the Worry of anybody or pets dying! 😮
A few weeks ago I received a tiny bulb of Oxalis palmifonds as a gift with an Etsy order. It is still just a bulb. Hopefully it will grow…
Do you already know the Lithops? They mostly look like little brains! I got one in a cute little halloween pumpkin pot and I'm planning to buy a skull shaped pot for the little guy

Look up Myrmecodia Beccarii, odd plant with a very interesting job....to help ants! I got one recently (minus the ants, lol) it was grown from seed ❤
03:50 The alocasia venom looks like an inside-out plant. Front sides of the leaves look like they should be actually the back sides 🤭
Hello! Fellow plant lover from Florida! 🌿
Let us know when you get the welwhitchia cuz I've also been wanting one
Hi, i AM from Poland, and i have "mother of thousands"... And nowdays, it's one of most creepy plant I have 🤣🤣 every little one new baby have those white roots, and it's look like some monster plant which eat people. 🤣🤣🙉

Pain and anxiety, as a tincture! I haven’t personally used it but I hear it’s really effective, if a bit short-acting in comparison to pharmaceuticals
Hi Claire! Thankyou for another AWESOME Video!

13:29 used for pain relief
I’m just wondering why Kalanchoe orgyalis is not popular. I love mine and it’s the easiest beautiful plant and the colours are so nice
That white fungi plant is kind of creepy to me. Like you’d see it in a sci fi movie with a big eyeball center

why did I watch this? I knew what would happen. Im allready broke and out of room 😥

The mother of thousands was the very first plant I've owned back in my elementary school time. It really reproduces like a weed 😂 once you own one, you soon will have thousands more.
I live in FL and I have had this plant for decades. The babies fall off and they grow EVERYWHERE!! More like Mother of Milions!!!
I ve got a little baby kalanchoe.
I had a Mother of Thousands for about two years. I bought it from a vide grenier (car boot sale) for a few euros.

Yesssssss!!!!
Eriospernum looks like a clam to me

@2:22 that could be an alien
Love your vids Claire!

Suggestion for the next strange plant video: nepenthes mirabilis var. echinostoma
The peristome on those are insane looking!
Or honestly nepenthes Edwardsiana and Hamata are amazing too!
