I have the pregnant onion (but we called it a false sea onion) that I've had for at least 30 years. I'm sure it's not the original bulb.... Because in that time I've moved probably a dozen times, had 6 dogs, 2 cats, 2 babies.... So it was very neglected at times. I had a lot of plants when I was younger (in my 20s) and as I had a family and moved, many were neglected and died. I have 3 or 4 still from back then (a Boston fern, a hibiscus, and the false sea onion.... I thought there was one more, but I can't think of it).... So that tells you this plant is a real survivor!

We were just talking about the types of sundew in Western Alaskan tundra in my botany class. We went out there for field work and they are TINY out there but if you look close you'll see them. So cute! Drosera rotundifolia, the one you mentioned, and also Drosera anglica grow where temps during winter drop to as low as -20 to -60 Fahrenheit (-28 to -50 Celsius) for days on end and there is very little light until the spring and summer. They bounce back! A lot of people here carnivorous plants and they thing hot tropical climate, but that's not always the case.

As for the Sundew in the beginning: be aware that a lot of carnivorous plants actually need a winter break so they stay healthy. There are also a lot of carnivorous plants in our latitude. For example I found a few Sundews in the Estonian bogs.
What I love to do with those plants: I take a big bucket and build a bog pot, where I plant Sarracenias, bog orchids and moss and put it on my balcony. It lives there year round.
There are shops in Germany that sell Sonerilas, also with good care tips. For example Jungle Leaves

Yay! Thanks for featuring the Hydnora africana! I'm the opposite of you with this plant. I love how weird and bizarre it looks, and those roots are so cool! I think it would be incredibly difficult to keep as a house plant since it is parasitic. You'd have to keep a host plant as well. I don't need to have one, I'm just happy knowing this bizarre-o plant exists.😃

I can't remember if you covered this, but I'd recommend alocasia plumbae (flying squid alocasia) for your next weird list, unless you already discussed it. Also, for those based in Europe, I'd ask about sourcing if purchasing the sundew featured as your first choice. It would probably be fine, but since plant poaching is an issue generally, I'd want to make sure that no one was pilfering local marshes to re-sell plants. Thanks for covering plant weirdos! I'm enjoying your series.

I had a Tacca Chantrieri. They come in black, green, or white. They call them the "bat" plant. The balls that hang down (generally about 8 or 9 balls) and those are the seeds. They grow very well in Florida. They need a great deal of humidity. When the seeds get are dry, I used to just push them into the sandy dirt. I had them all around my pool. I have tried growing them in Colorado, where I live now, and they do not grow here. They are small, not happy. But if you have a greenhouse, you will succeed.

Have four on your list. Most are recent. The Droseria I think will need a winter dormancy. I'd suggest looking for some that are just as nice and are from more tropical areas. The Pregnant Onion I have had - have a small one now. Grew them big and had them flower. Never noticed and smell issues. I look at it as a novelty plant. Once it has bloomed I tend to loss interest in the plant. Have the Tephrocacus - acually have three varieties. Only issue is the the 'balls' seem to break off easily. So growing one to the size of some you showed images of can't be easy. On the other hand you get lots of propogations. Do have the Chicken Fern - have had it about six weeks now and still waiting for it to start growing.
As for plants to look at I'd suggest the Editholea Grandis. It is truelly wierd, but does have a nice looking flower. Just don't smell it.

Tephrocactus are in the family Opuntioideae and are related to prickly pears. Most Opuntioideae show that segmented growth pattern. It’s pretty much the same things as prickly pears except prickly pears form flat pads, whereas Tephrocactus form more rounded stem segments. They grow really fast just like prickly pears, but past a certain size they start falling apart. That’s how they reproduce in nature.
Get them from a cactus nursery. Tephrocactus are super common. There’s nothing rare about them. A plant shop will overcharge you.

Greetings Clair from Missouri (USA). Regarding the Hydnora Africana, it is a fungi and stinks terribly. Its common name is Devil's fingers, also known as Clathrus Archeri or octopus stinkhorn, that's native to the Southern Hemisphere. It has a bright red color and tentacle-like arms that grow from a slimy, gelatinous egg. The interior of each arm is covered with a sticky, black substance that contains spores. As it blooms, the fungus has a strong smell, similar to rotting flesh. It won't grow off its host, it's parasitic so you don't want it for a house plant. It's weird that's for sure.

I got the Tephrocactus at the conservatory archives about 2 months ago and they had a bunch at that time... but yeah it was 48£ for 2 balls!! not cheap but I am in love with it, they had some 3 ball ones that looked like mickey mouse!!!, I had somebody tell me that she has owned one for 2 years and its now growing the first ball in her care so if that is the common growth pattern I can see why they are selling them for that price...
