I fell in love with this cheerful, soft spoke woman. What an angel. I just love listening to her voice, because it is so calming! The Lord is using her life to touch many souls all through her love of applique! God bless her.
Good Heavens! What's with folks for being impatient -- and even RUDE -- about the finished product, which she clearly says, in comments, IT ISN'T FINISHED, YET!!! She's graciously GIVING US -- NOT SELLING -- this cool pattern, too! Just listen to her video in its entirety and she tells you where to find it! What a wonderful video! I did a google search for "backbasting" and found a number of "how to" videos that should tide people over until this succinct, easy-to-understand, clearly passionate about appliqué woman can make her next installment. Meanwhile, for the advanced quilters who already KNOW what backbasting is, they can get started using a broadly applicable cool technique that will work -- amazingly -- on both light AND dark fabrics! Looking forward to the next mile in my journey to making cool quilts! SO glad I found this video!!!
This is very clever. And who knew that "Press-n-Seal" had a 'selvage' edge? I sure didn't! Thanks for sharing your technique, Connie, your video was very clear and easy to follow. You have a wonderful teaching skill. Thank you! ~Diana from Toronto
Wow, what a fantastic way to get the pattern on the back of your work for Back Basting applique'. I Can't wait to hit the market to grab a box of Press & Seal and get going. Thanks so much!
Thank you for this wonderful tutorial, I found this every interesting...I would have loved to have seen you do some work on it because as I’ve not heard of the method “Back Basting “ and maybe see the finish article...💐
Thanks, Connie Sue - I'm going to use this method to trace and transfer the quilting pattern to my quilt tops when I don't want to mark up my finished top! I agree with other commenters, though, that I'd like to see a follow-up on the next steps to finish out the process of completing the applique pattern. :)
I enjoyed watching your video your technique was so formative and you were easy to understand. I am new at quilting so I’m learning new techniques thank you
Fantastic discovery! I knew when I bought my first roll (for the kitchen/cooking use)there was something about this product I could take to my sewing room! I’m bummed you didn’t show the finished product.🤷🏼♀️
@@ABQConnieSue We did, and we're all still confused!! You've shown one technique here and then showed us a totally different method of applique to explain this technique... which doesn't make an ounce of sense. Judging from all the comments on here, there's a lot of people totally confused by what you're doing. Then when someone asks you, you refer them to other videos that don't show us how to do what you're doing here.
Well this is funny. I’ve never seen this Connie Sue before but I do watch a card making a lady named Jennifer Maguire and her husband is the guy that came up with making this press and seal for Johnson & Johnson. Good video Connie.
I haven't read all of the comments.... so I'm not sure if you've addressed this yet. BUT, I have a tiny bit of experience with appliqué (raw edge appliqué only) I've been interested and understand the methodology of doing appliqué "in the hoop." When using an embroidery hoop, the pattern first "baste's the pattern to the fabric. After it is basted then you cover the area with fabric then the pattern sets to satin stitch over the basted lines. I'm assuming that when you back baste the pattern on the front, that you are in essence transferring your pattern with basting stitches to the front of your piece. So, then I'm trying to imagine the next step. I'm not experienced enough to get through how to do this next step.... eagerly awaiting your followup video. Thank you for sharing a new process and a new way to learn!!!!
Awww, I loved this! Thanks so much. I have to say I am a beginner quilter. I enjoy watching quilting videos~ I don't even know some of the techniques you are using, but you are so cute, and this was fascinating to me! Thanks, that was very enjoyable! I am going to my quilt group, and ask all of my questions from this video!
Please forgive me for being a bit confused. It's normal for me! Ha. I hope you will demonstrate back basting, too! I just watched your video about back basting, but it appears that you are using a somewhat different technique than this one with the Press and Seal. The other one (two hearts intertwined) does not use Press and Seal. I believe the only real difference is that you marked the pattern on the fabric. Yes? With this video (using Press and Seal) that I am commenting on now, I am a bit confused about the batik blocks you are using. Please tell me why I need to have a batik block on both the front and back of the larger one. I will be checking for your response! I do want to get started on applique - and I think I am going to enjoy your videos (and your FaceBook sites). Thank You!
Yes, I'm working on another video as we speak. Hopefully it will answer your questions. Normally in my method we trace the pattern onto the back of our background fabric. We use a #2 pencil for this. However, occasionally we encounter a situation where the pencil mark doesn't show up. In these situations we can trace our pattern onto the Glad Press 'N' Seal instead. I was showing this second technique in my video. I would encourage you to follow my Facebook group. It is called "Apple Blossom Quilts Group". In the files section are 16 lessons that teach my Quick Prep Applique Method. I recommend downloading all 16 lessons and placing them in a binder for easy reference. As to the question about the two batik fabric, I hadn't realized how confusing it must seem to a beginner. One of the fabrics is the frame (blue), the second fabric is the center background fabric (pastel blue). I have already appliquéd the frame fabric to the center fabric. I have not trimmed the center background fabric to ¼" around the frame. Guess I better do that so that it all makes more sense.
"back-biting": I found Connie Sue did a video earlier called "The Secret to Beautiful Needleturn Appliqué" in which she shows the "back-biting" she references since this video is only the start where the pattern is transferred from the original to the project background. In the earlier video, however, she has traced her applique pattern to the back of the fabric and does not use this Press & Seal method.
Thank you.. Although not as meticulous as you, I did get my pattern traced on onto the background. I would like to learn about this with back basting. Is your fb group still active?
Do you then stitch through the Press ‘n Seal to do the applique? If not, how do you transfer the pattern that you’ve copied onto the Press ‘n Seal onto the back of your fabric?
I guess I don’t understand how you appliqué now. Do you use the pattern to cut shapes with a seam allowance? Or can use use this method to just quilt? Your presentation is very good. Your directions are excellent. Maybe seeing the finished product can help me visualize the end results. Keep up the good work, you are very talented. TFS ❤️
I am totally confused. How do yo applique with this method? Love the idea of this method, but need more information. Would loved to have seen the finished product.
Would you do a video on how now to applique this. I'm a little confusing on how you would applique it the lines are on the back and the material would be in the front. I really want to learn how to do applique..
So I watched the two videos about inner points and reverse appliqué and still have no clue about where the Press & Seal thing comes into it. So confused...
I just did the same thing and I'm still confused. I don't know why people put things up to teach people how to do something and then when people don't understand they don't bother to even answer anyone. There's obviously a LOT of people who are confused with this technique. For all I know it's a brilliant technique.....if we knew what to do.
I didn't go through all the comments. Would there be a reason a very fine sharpie wouldn't work doing this instead of an ink pen? Just wondering.. Thanks!
Join “Apple Blossom Quilt Group”. Be sure to answer the question or you won’t be accepted. The patterns for Ferne’s Hens are in the files section. The patterns are in PDF format.
By now you may have had your answer but quilting is not only sewing your pieces together its also mainly sewing a running stitch pattern such as she have drawn unto your work /piece to be a quilted project....
Reminds me of an episode of "Designing Women" when Suzanne keeps saying "Miss Valdosta Feed and Grain" over and over. Julia finally snaps and says "Just say Miss Feed or Miss Grain. You're giving me a headache!" Easy now, people, it's all in fun. I think this method is very intriguing, but would have loved to see her actually do some applique.
I agree with the other comment about “salvage” and “selvage.” Got hard to listen to the mis-pronunciation. Lol. I use this method, Glad press and seal, for quilting. Place the press and seal on the fabric, trace the pattern lightly on the press and seal, sew directly over lines on the press and seal, then carefully tear it away. This works great for lightly quilted areas only. You run into issues with heavily quilted areas as you pull it away as you get tiny pieces of wrap you have to pick away with tweezers. It can be done but puts another step in your process.
You must join my Facebook group called Apple Blossom Quilts Group. You will be asked a question when you ask to join. Answer the question. I will approve you. You will find the patterns to “Ferne’s Hens” in the file section. There are 9 blocks. This is one of them.
This was interesting and useful. I have never heard "selvage" pronounced "salvage". Is this a localized pronunciation? It is a cool linguistic mark and I really want to know just where you are from, or what your linguistic heritage is.
It's actually 'selvedge' . The edge left in manufacturing fabric to prevent unravelling. 😃 Although, having said that, this is plastic sheet, , not woven. Maybe ' salvage' will do!
I fell in love with this cheerful, soft spoke woman. What an angel. I just love listening to her voice, because it is so calming! The Lord is using her life to touch many souls all through her love of applique! God bless her.

LOOKING FORWARD TO YOUR FURTHER TEACHING.

what a great idea! thank you for the helpful instruction. I will try this today!
Thanks for the very easy to follow tutorial. Your speach is very articulated and even-paced. I appreciate your teaching style.

I use cellophane to trace patterns for silk painting , stays straight works great !
Ms. Connie Sue, you are a genius!! This is a great way to transfer appliqué!
I have had this Glad Press for years and had no idea on how to use it. Thanks for your video are you going to do another one for the next step. Cheers

Bummer! I wanted to see your appliqué process. 😟
Awesome idea though! I will try it for embroidery. 😃

Beautiful thanks for sharing
Really nice! Thank you.
This is wonderful. Thank you but you should make your volume louder. I turned my volume all the way out and still hard to hear.
That's is a beautiful fabric and design used in this video. Would you be willing to share the info for that with us?
Pattern is my own design and is no longer available. the fabric was from several years ago and I don’t remember the details.
Enjoyed this video very much. Thanks for the demo. I also subscribed. Pam in Alabama

It looks amazing.
What pattern are you using? Is it an applique pattern? Thank you for this great demo.
She gives name and where u can get pattern free on Facebook near end of video.
Sure would like to know where I can purchase the pattern as I love anything with chickens.
Did you get that she said where to get it at the very end? I know I don't always watch videos to the very end, so maybe you missed it?
I'm gonna try her site to see if I can get the rest of this process. I think I can imagine it but not sure.
Lorele Beverland did you get the rest of the process?
So far I'm intrigued but I don't understand the applique process using the press and seal.
Could you trace a quilting pattern and put it on top of a quilt to hand quilt through?
Yes
Wondering if you could do this on for a free motion quilt as well? Can I use that idea with a sewing machine? Thank you, appreciate your time!

Salvege....the way we pronounce it. Raised by Victorian grandmother in California who was from Missouri.
Looks like it is time consuming.
I have used this product for machine embroidery..
I guess I missed something! Why ar you doing this?
Take a shot every time she says Glad Press & Seal😮
LOL...Luann... be nice. You are funny, however.
Whoops!, selvage not selvage! Hahahaha!
Good grief, did she get paid for every time she said Glad PressNSeal?
What the heck does this look like? I have NO idea what you are talking about. It may be clear instructions if you know what you are talking about.
