One of the most remarkable things Ive seen in cricket, the rise of Sri Lankan cricket over that decade, just incredible. Their tenacity, their fast learning, just amazing what they achieved.
Remember this game well. Other than the fact that WI beat SL easily in a one sided contest, SL bowlers tested the WI bats with short pitched stuff and many times the batsmen were hit on the face. Richardson and Gomes left the field retired hurt (spitting blood). Lloyd wore helmet. I don't remember him wear a helmet otherwise. This was his last series before retirement.
Great and Brave West Indians; two of the 11 have been returned to pavilion due to face injuries yet coming batsmen are helmet-less. Once again brave greats.

@@Wally-H Ya I never said Marshall was not a great bowler, I started watching cricket from 1984 when ENG toured India, have known Marshall from when he was at his peak. Any bowler like Marshall has to be great, someone who has 380 odd wickets in 80 tests at an avg of 20. What I am saying is, the 70s and 80s brought genuine pace into the world of cricket for the first time, batsmen without helmets were ill prepared and that is what seems to have added an aura to these bowlers. Today's bowlers are as fast and definitely have many more variations, the batsmen have also worked out how to face pace, which has made the work of bowlers difficult. That's what I meant.
