It was on this day that Cive Lloyd's West Indies got to smell the 'parfum' ball, and got to hear the sound of 'chin music' close up , which they dished out so often to opponents. What would have been galling to them that it came from the raw, talented, totally unpredictable new comers.......
I heard in a commentary of another match that two players had retired hurt hit by Rumesh and searched for it. Amazing pace to trouble the then West Indian legends !
Thanks for uploading. A good return for the way the West Indians treated us at the 1975 World Cup. They sent two of our players to the hospital. Despite that, we replied with 274 for 4, to their 360 odd. (It was a 60 overs then). Appreciate if you can upload that.
@AAbaya2024 Get your facts straight moron. Australia made 320 plus and Jeff Thomson sent two SL batsmen to the hospital, not the West Indies. WI did dismiss the Sri Lankans for 86 in that tournament but it was two medium pacers who did the damage, Keith Boyce and Bernard Julien
@@Heath-Gallagher dude Richie was equal to the modern foursome of Kohli, Smith, Root and Williamson. Captaincy I felt ruined his batting and his mental psyche. As a pure batsmen in the 80s he was fucking deadly.
After helmets were introduced in late 70s , they say Viv Richards was the only batsman who never wore any protection on the head but atleast he used to bat with cap/hat but Larry Gomes was the only one never wore anything on head. Gavaskar in his autobiography says that he tried to wear helmet but it made him uncomfortable. He used wear a skull cap under his sunhat..
I think when a team is overly dominant, decline sets in. Probably the only two really great fast bowlers the Windies faced 85 onwards till Wasim in 87 were Imran and Hadlee. Without home umpiring, slowing of over rates, they might well have lost to England in the late 80s as well as Pakistan in 87..
@relevantbrother8964 rubbish. home umpiring did have an effect on the 88 series vs pakistan in the WI, i admit, but Javed Miandad's most common mode of dismissal was LBW. Miandad was only given out once LBW in Pakistan, so clearly their umpires had an effect on the series there as well. Secondly, England had two opportunities to beat the WI in 1990 and didn't even get close in the last two tests. BTW, england lost 19 tests to the west indies between 1980 and 1989: 1 in 1980(would have been more if not for rain), 2 in 1981, 5 in 1984, 5 in 1986, and 4 in the summer of four captains in 1988
They simply weren't ready for that sling arm action I believe, of course Rumesh was breathing fire but WI have played Lillie/Thommo/Imran/Akram/Waqar who were the fastest of their times.
Rumesh Ratnayake was the slingshot action who could make the ball rear up from good length like a king cobra! The windies got a taste of their own medicine of a strict diet of liquid pace from greenhorns like SriLanka!😅
@ELP1791Rubbish. the only team viv didn't dominate was barbados, which had clarke, marshall, garner and wayne daniel, an attack that would bulldoze any batting lineup then or now. he didn't need to succeed against that quartet because they were on the same international team
@@juanestadian8471 An average of 39 against the Bajans wasn't too bad, was it? Gus Logie averaged around 44 against the same Bajans, and surely, everyone would agree, Viv was a far better bat than Gus?
@@juanestadian8471What rubbish in that , it was a known fact that when England toured WI during 1986 series Mike Gatting was seriously injured while facing Patrick Patterson , in reacting to that incident , Cricket writer of carribian Tony Cozier had written that in a sports magazine called " Sports Star " Even famous Richards also struggled to score runs and averaged less than 30 Runs against such hostile face bowling attacks " Richards as a batsman didn't score heavily against majority of carribian teams and even struggled to score century against that sort of fast bowling was well known fact and whenever he scored centuries against them the bowlers got tired and second line bowling against whom he could score , Even in international matches he scored heavily against weak bowling attacks of India and Englist team only .
yoiu read that foolishness before you wrote it? viv averaged over 40 against every team he played against genius. the lowest he averaged against any side was 41 against pakistan, the second best team of his era(a team with imran, wasim and safraz nawaz). And even if he didn't score many centuries, it wasn't necessary for him to do that because once the openers scored runs, he'd batter the opposition into a demoralized mess. They'd be in no position to face the four horsemen. Tony Cozier is talking about barbados and possibly Jamaica. Trinidad, my country did not have a world class attack n the 80s, neither did guyana after Croft. In fact the next Guyanese player to be a consistent test player after Croft was Chanderpaul. And Windward Islands has been the weakest producer of wi cricketers in our history. And as i said, there is nothing to be ashamed of struggling against Marshall, whose career bowling average is under 20, Garner, whose avg is just under 20 and Clark, who created genuine fear in county cricket in the 80s. Even Achilles had his weak points. Viv's SR is over 70 in test cricket, which was unheard of then, and mostly unheard of in the 2000s for that matter. only lara and one or two less gifted batsmen have had SRs over 60., there were batsmen in viv's era who averaged more than viv. Gregg Chappell and Gavaskar are two. But Chappell's SR is inferior to Viv's and Gavaskar knew his limitations and played within them, so his SR is way below Viv's
The West Indies beat Sri Lanka by 8 wickets in that match. The Lankans injured some West Indies batters, but could not avoid defeat. All is well when the end is well. Congratulations to the West Indies.
I thought it was aussues seeing colour of jersys,,, I supposed wrong clippings!!??? Lankans always fighters, being new team they avenged mightys in the same way as they were troubled!!!!😏😝😅😅😝but Indians never did like this to any team, even now....
I loved the Lankan line up then. Making their test debut in 1982,they beat us in 1985,in a one day match. Respect 🙏🙏
The Lankan of old were a formidable force. Hopefully they will someday regain their lost glory.

Still had a better action than Shoaib Akhtar & Malinga ! 👍👌

No worries. Be hard to find footage of that World Cup 1975 match. A good reply that against the World Cup winning Windies side.

@AAbaya2024 homes its jeff thomson that nearly killed some of your players in 75, not the west indians. we didn't even have a four prong then
Bro ur vedios R osm...use more detailed description and tags to make it viral
Cheers Farooq! Thanks for your support!
SL gave the WI a taste of their own medicine
still i can remember lots of issues came about rumesh "s bowling Action
cant imagine any of the so called great batsmen of today standing up to that kind of relentless west indies bodyline bowlers
Good job Lankan lions good answer t** for tat
Love those jerseys
SL and WI should return to these jerseys
Brilliant video ! Bro .
Thanks James!
rumesh was as quick as lillie
WI could never handle the dose of their own medicine.
tHEY WON BY 8 WICKETS.

Its mostly the pitch more than ths bowlers
West Indies bowlers also share credit with bad pitches in that era
Nowadays, these kind of pitch is not prepared to have good competition which has help for bowlers
