And the correct designation is Bf109 because of the factory designations, none of Billy Messerschmitt’s aircraft during 1941 were named after him.

True, but "World of Tanks" is a poke at World of Warcraft as well. They weren't trying to copy obviously, considering the games are completely different, but rather poke fun of. If you watched the original trailers for WoT this is pretty evident. Plus, they could have called it World of Fighters or World of Planes but they choose World of Warplanes. Either way, I'm sure it will be referred to as WoWP.
