Atmospheric black metal is so far in my life, my favourite music genre. Most of my favourite albums I've ever heard is atmospheric black metal. It just speaks to me in ways that no other genre of music ever quite has, and I've been going to sleep to it every night for about a year and a half. So beautiful and relaxing. Despite the usually negative lyrics, it really doesn't matter, bleak and sad things are often just so relaxing in a weird way. And the same for me! My journey of black metal all started when I heard Burzum. Although it was the debut album I heard first. Still to this day those first 3 Burzum albums especially are so special to me. I also adore Filosofem and Fallen. And agreed, the vocals I see as another instrument. Also I mentioned this before to you, but Withering Worlds: The Long Goodbye. To me is an amazing atmospheric bm album.
You are 100% correct Quest about the vocal in atmospheric BM. They don't stand out or overwhelm, they blend right in, often layered so that the listener has an experience as opposed to just simply listening to the music.
One good thing about atmoblack is being able to repeat a riff for minutes on end and it doesn't get boring like in Between Bronze Walls by Ruins of Beverast, Jesus Tod by Burzum or Delay's Progression (specifically the ending) by A Forest of Stars. If it's the right riff it works well.
Great video. Questy since you love atmosphere (especially cold, dark, and bleak atmospheres), you should check out Jean Sibelius (Finnish composer). Check out these to start: -Lemminkainen Suite (especially The Swan of Tuonela and Lemminkainen in Tuonela) - Tapiola - Symphony No. 4 (1st and 3rd movements) Any recordings conducted by Vanska or Segerstam will be phenomenal. Great music to drift off to! You will LOVE those...sort of black metal of classical music! Let me know if you do.... Frank
Under 6 months ago I started listen to Drudkh and that music is magical! Autumn Aurora, Blood In Our Wells, Microcosmos...all good albums. Using some folk intruments and natural atmosphere are the elements I like their music. Also I like Alcest. I think it's more like post-metal, but they have atmo BM influences as well.
Appreciated this video. You put into words what I suspect a lot of us feel about what sets listening to atmospheric BM apart from most other listening experiences. Totally agree, for ex, on what you said about vocals.
Aquilus is so damn good, his latest release is amazing. You should also check out a band called "Akhlys" and their work "The Dreaming I" (2015) and "Melinoë" (2020). Both great atmospheric black metal albums, although a bit more intense than Aquilus e.g., they almost put you in a trance while listening to them.
Akhlys always does it for me, both albums but I like The Dreaming more. Tried to figure out why I go to them so much and kind of worked it out... It leaves you wanting for nothing.. You know pressing play you aren't going to be thinking 'ehh, I need something blacker, or darker, more evil, heavier, more melodic, more atmospheric, more beauty, more despair, more evil... *insert black metal descriptive here*. It covers it all and leaves you're every need satisfied in one hit... Breath and Levitation easily one of my favourite songs that hits 100% perfect on every level for the full 9 mins.
My favourite Atmospheric Black Metal bands have to be Caladan Brood, Sojourner, and Summoning. All three define the genre as expressive, intense, but as you said, surprisingly chill. I quite recommend Saor, Skyforest and Mare Cognitum if you haven't already, as I think they will all just the kind of thing you'll love =3.
I do have my preferences to more experimental type of black metal/Melodic Black Metal. However Windir, Drudkh, Mare Cognitum are still some of my favorites of all of black metal. The Atmosphere those 3 are able to make is just mind blowing they repeat but the music is so fucking good and the atmosphere keeps me interested in the music that I don’t care I’m here for the ride. They all can be capable of making beautiful music but all they could be aggressive if they wanted to be.
I'm also really into Drudkh at the mo. Just discovered Microcosmos. What an album! Blood in our wells and Forgotten Legends are great too. I also got into atmospheric through Burzum. However, I listened to Bathory long before that (I am old!). I agree with you about the serene thing and the vocals serving as an instrument. It's a pity so many people can't get past the "screaming"!
G'day Questy, love the video as atmospheric black metal is my absolute favourite genre, Negura Bunget's 'OM', Spectral Lore's 'III'', Krallice's 'Dimensional Bleedthrough'... I mean c'mon, it just doesn't get any better. If you were considering making any more videos talking about stuff relating to the subgenre I would be absolutely stoked as I'm always looking for more atmo bm material, I can never get enough of it, I think you can relate with me on that one! Keep being you mate, you're a champion, love from Australia!
Both Aquilus albums are amazing. Griseus especially is really something special. I never got into Burzum much deeper than enjoying the raw buzzsaw guitar sound of Dunkelheit for a few minutes before it started to hurt my ears. I'm more of a symphonic or prog black listener I guess. Emperor and Ihsahn's solo material is pretty great.
I got to say atmospheric and melodic black metal are my favorite sub-categories of black metal. I've always liked the juxtaposition of the bleak, evil atmosphere of black metal with more beautiful, calm moments. Again, I am selective when it comes to black metal but atmoblack has always had a soft spot for me.
Honestly it was some of the classic Norwegian bands that got me into atmoblack, Emperor and Darkthrone hit a really nice balance between atmoblack and the traditional second wave style and I'm really grateful they pushed me to explore this style more. Songs like Beyond the Pantheon and Quintessence really hit home for me.
I wasn't a huge fan of the atmo black until I discovered Forteresse and Quebecan scene as a whole. Those 10 minutes long songs that have only 1 or 2 riffs,..but they are so great with this sharp and glorious sound.I could listen to it all day meanwhile mentally having a trip into another dimension.
Atmospheric Black Metal is one of those genres you feel, rather than hear. So many great bands have a way with their music that it resembles artwork rather than music. 5 bands to check out are: Saor Spectral Lore Midnight Odyssey Ygg Kalmankantaja The other thing to add is that a lot of Atmospheric Black Metal uses instruments you wouldn't typically hear in Metal in general, such as flutes, violins, harps and even synths. As the genre can be the easiest and most accessible of the Black metal sub-genres, I'd regard it for even non-metalheads, to at the least, check it out even if the vocals aren't your thing.
I think that there is something therapautic about atmospheric black metal. Some songs seems made by a profound sense of melancholy, such as Dunkelkeit. And to listen it in some way relieves the weight, the thin opression in to be alive. I mean, it is pain translated in beauty. This is why we never are the same after discover atmospheric black metal
I feel the same , in what you like about atomos.B.M, it takes you on a journey and it is kind of hypnotic, I can not sit listening, but have to stand and move on the music it flows in my body and mind and makes me feel good... favorite bands are so many like W.I.T.T.R , DRUDHK , BURZUM, MARE COGNITUM, SPECTRAL LORE, EVILFEAST, BROUILLARD, SUMMONING, ... and more
I like some black metal but I don't listen to a lot of it or am that knowledgeable about it. I can understand people not liking the screaming, sometimes I can find that grating with some black metal. However, I have been giving a Drudkh a listen recently after hearing Questy talking a lot about them and starting to really like it. Really enjoying the Blood In Our Wells album.
It's interesting cause my idea of pure serenity would be Chillstep stuff like Blackmill or something of the like. Goes to show how complex beings humans can be, we can have complete different views on what we deem as good or enjoyable. I personally cannot see how atmospheric black metal is serene, but if you do then that's awesome 👍
I've been listening to predominantly atmospheric/cosmic/blackgaze/DS black metal nonstop for about 15-16 years. I listen to at least 2 atmoblack records a day. Or wear one out for weeks on end. Drudkh, Autumn Nostalgia, Coldworld, Mare Cognitum, Midnight Odyssey, etc
I always dug Lustre, Sterbend and Wolves in the Throne Room. I dont really do the whole genre splicing thing I just grab records that I like and listen to them. I have an entire ipod dedicated to DSBM/funeral doom and its fantastic to shuffle.
I love atmospheric black metal. I don't hate but can't really get into a lot of pure black metal, but atmospheric black metal, melodic black metal, post-black metal, and blackgaze I love. Mesarthim are one of my favorite bands and just last month I finally got into Drudkh and they rule. I've only listened from the beginning up to Blood In Our Wells but it's all fantastic. Some of my favorite releases of this year (A Pale December, Pure Wrath, Mossgiver) are atmospheric black metal as well. Now the topic of why bands like Alcest and Deafheaven are blackgaze and not atmospheric black metal I think has to do with the riffing, tuning and distortion. Both genres create an atmosphere with their music but atmospheric black metal has black metal riffing (especially tremolo riffs), tuning and distortion whereas blackgaze has shoegaze riffing, tuning and distortion that is heavy and creates a wall of sound but is also more bright, warm and rock sounding than metal sounding. Just my two cents as a music listening and not a music composer.
I’m not too much in atmosferic black metal, it’s just very few time in it, but I’m just starting liking bands like Grima and other bands from Naturmacht Production. I always loved Alcest, as I said, and I still miss to listen the latest album, which I think is good... not like in the past, like Ecaille de lune, Les voyages de l’ame, and Shelter, for example, but still good. It’s songs are more metal-oriented like in Kodama, the few I listened, very strong, but still atmosferic.
Honestly it took me forever to get into atmosphere black metal precisely because I didn’t want to calm down lol while listening to black metal, then I discovered summoning
In all the videos I've watched about this music on youtube, I feel it's kinda weird that my favorite active black metal band, Djevel, haven't been mentioned in a single one of them. They're on a whole other level level than Burzum in my opinion and I'd argue they're equal to the classic era Darkthronek, if not better. I recommend you check them out, because I'm sure you'd love them. They just oozes of proper black metal atmosphere. Try one of the three latest albums. If you put a gun to my head and told me to describe 'Tanker som rir natten', I'd say it's a mix of Darkthrone, Windir and Ulver.
The song månen skal være mine... is amazing the song has kinda a happy undertone but remains bleak and existential in a way with lyrics of my home country
ruclips.net/video/gRxy6rbxANk/видео.html if you can understand this tune then you might understand and the hipocrisy of life and what bm tries to lively paint with the most grimmest colors
Bingo, Questy. Love this, gonna have to check out that Ukrainian band you mentioned. And look at all these comments. Metal fans are extremely well-spoken, and intelligent. You don't get words like these on billboard 100 video links. As for me, the best way to describe Atmospheric BM, is simply "haunting." It is just other-worldly. Like a choir of spirits chanting ancient incantations and mysteries from a long-forgotten time. I'd Imagine listening to Xasthur at the bottom of the ocean with the lights out in the submarine would kinda' make the most sense lol. cheers man.
I feel like atmospheric black metal is a bit of a tautology, just like brutal death metal, but I guess it's just emphasizing that element which is supposed to be inherent to the genre even more.
I like atmoblack prolly because it's heavily influenced by me liking post-punk, particularly synthier side of goth like some darkwave, coldwave, ethereal wave and post-punk/new wave (gray area). Also it's basically chiller side of metal yea.
the biggest in atmospheric black meta i'ts that the atmosphere it can be melacholi sad nostalgic etc this genre is a proof that the black metal i'ts not only satan and inverted cross with unreadable logos
Satan is what some bands used bm for to make it popular but in reality it is a matter of intense emotions, doesn't always need to be the fastest but of course if you mix two opposite substances(melancholy and wrath) then you have Chaos, some call it Satan...all life is set by the rythm, everything has rythm even the stone.
Try Summoning. They're not exactly "black" (only their debut is pure black), but the atmosphere and soundscapes they create are just stellar. Listening through the whole discography rn because of the war in my country. It calms my soul.
Useful and lots of similar opinions but Could you flash up some of the albums next time or some other visuals. Just think it will help break up video and help keep it engaging.
Classical music and prog metal and black metal same genre it makes you chill. Screaming is an instrument. In the background. I prefer instruments ovdr vocals other people don't. That's why I like black metal

I love the sound of BM but I'm not into any of the religious bs including Satan worshiping. I also love really long songs which don't rush so to me, ABM are pretty much perfect.
Atmospheric bm i closer to depicting the misery and reality of life than what so called true bm hypocritically shows as true, you know i mean emotional intensity, there is Chaos or whatever you might call it.
@THAM You are right to some degree, because atmospheric Black Metal can transmit very strong and powerful emotions with it’s sorrowful and hypnotic riffs. But I much prefer trve or traditional Black Metal because it combines everything I like about Black Metal. It has the atmosphere, but also the agression, evilness, melodies, raw production etc. Also, traditional Black Metal is a very good way to transmit negative emotions. Despite the fact that some artists might not take themselves 100 % seriously, some are and they manage to make music that is extremely meaningful. One good example of that is mütiilation (one of my all time favourite bands). Some artists that are not extremely serious in their visuals and lyrics like Immortal (another band I love) can also communicate intense emotions, because their music is really authentic. In the end, the style of Black Metal that transmits the strongest emotions depends on personal preferences. For me this style is and always will be trve Black Metal.
While I don't listen to atmoblack a lot, one of my favorite bands in this genre is definitely Evilfeast. Their (or his) discography is just flawless.
Damn, agreed! Very underestimate band. One very good, in a very similar style, is Elffor. Give it a try.
Elffor is perfect 🤘.
I love Evilfeast. Amazing.
Midnight Odyssey has captured my imagination recently, going thru all their older albums....
He is so underrated

I’ve been listening to a lot of this lately. Cosmic Church had been a band I’ve been into lately. Grima gets a lot of playtime too.
“ in the still of a northern full moon” is the greatest atmospheric black metal song ever written 👍
Great in-depth analysis of the black metal subgenres! 🖤 c:
Really enjoyed the video!

Try Leviathan or Lurker of Chalice you will get surprised how overestimated are European BM bands.

The godfather of Atmo black is Mark Mcoys Fields of the nephilum. Cited as an influence by many bands.
Ok I’m gonna go watch Burzum retrospective again! Best video ever.

Totally agree with you here! One band that I want to raise up here is my favorite: Elderwind
Listen to the band (An Autumn For Crippled Children) which is more a post black-metal/shoegaze band but it is so good. Super atmospheric like Alcest
Godlike thumbnail

My favourite in this Subgenre has to be Paysage D'hiver. Especially S/T, Steineiche & Das Tor
Xasthur
a very underated band and my best black metal band in general
I don't know you, but, can I say I love you? It's so beautiful what you said and so true!
I'd Imagine listening to Xasthur at the bottom of the ocean with the lights out in the submarine would kinda' make the most sense lol. cheers man.
Atmospheric black metal is an otherworldly portal. Similar vibe to funeral doom for me.
you have to check out "Penitence Onirique" really hypnotic atmoblack, especially the first album VITRIOL
I feel like atmospheric black metal is a bit of a tautology, just like brutal death metal, but I guess it's just emphasizing that element which is supposed to be inherent to the genre even more.
Wind by Melankoli, check it out it's one of the best atmospheric black metal albums ever
Opinion on Limbonic Art?
What's your opinion on Dungeon Synth then?
Katatonia shirt let's go
You described it perfectly
I like atmoblack prolly because it's heavily influenced by me liking post-punk, particularly synthier side of goth like some darkwave, coldwave, ethereal wave and post-punk/new wave (gray area). Also it's basically chiller side of metal yea.
the biggest in atmospheric black meta i'ts that the atmosphere it can be melacholi sad nostalgic etc this genre is a proof that the black metal i'ts not only satan and inverted cross with unreadable logos

Have you ever listened to Murmuüre?
Bro you must listen Ethereal - lithe avvy and Choria and Purewarth that Atmospheric band in my country Indonesia 💜💜 ✌
🤘
Also ...Ghaal's Wyrd ..... Or what Kristian did after Wardruna
I'm new to atmoblack metal, so suggestions are welcome for me, thanks for the video
Serithal “ In the still of a northern full moon”
Empyruim “ A winter sunset”
Lurker of Chalice, try it
Try Summoning. They're not exactly "black" (only their debut is pure black), but the atmosphere and soundscapes they create are just stellar. Listening through the whole discography rn because of the war in my country. It calms my soul.
So that's how you pronounce Drudkh
Useful and lots of similar opinions but Could you flash up some of the albums next time or some other visuals. Just think it will help break up video and help keep it engaging.
Nice shirt
Carach angren is the only black metal band that i find the sound genuinely enjoyable. It's a symphonic black metal band, but they do it so well
Do you know Alda? If so what do you think of them?
Classical music and prog metal and black metal same genre it makes you chill. Screaming is an instrument. In the background. I prefer instruments ovdr vocals other people don't. That's why I like black metal
HI Questy, great content. If you don`t know, give a listen to MIRRORTHRONE, a one man progressive symphonic black metal band. I can advice you the album GANGRENE. ENJOY IT
I need to get Marrow of the Spirit cd
What about the band Mesarthim? They take Atmospheric Black Metal and complicate things a bit.
They are great but quite upbeat almost dancey quite a different vibe to most which is cool
pale swordsman also good
caladan brood, gallowbraid, ruadh
Some people introduce theirselves into black metal with atmo or melodic bm, and the elitist dumbs should respect that
I love old school raw black metal bathory
I love the sound of BM but I'm not into any of the religious bs including Satan worshiping. I also love really long songs which don't rush so to me, ABM are pretty much perfect.
I see Ukrainian "Drudkh" in your list, so I can also advice you "Khors" and "Nokturnal Mortum"
Look up Pozar, and Elgibbor,
can't have atmosperic black metal without pathway(they're in russian so i don't know how accurate the translation is)
Atmospheric Black Metal is cool, but nothing beats trve Black Metal. I really like the French band Feuille Morte.
