Wild Ending to a Train Chase! Chasing Adrian and Blissfield Highhood GP9s!!

  • Well you can plan everything out, somethings will plan you instead. During our time on the Adrain and Blissfield we had one of those “Oh Shit” moments. Lucky for us no one was hurt and we still made it home that night in the Subaru. Instead of looking at it as bad we got great photos and made lifelong memories. I hope you enjoy what I could make of this day chasing EMD GP9s on the ADBF.
    I’d also like to note the reason for this chase, while GP9s days have been long gone the Adrian and Blissfield has continued to use these troopers both on there home rails in Southeast Michigan but also on there Jackson to Lansing line. Recently the JAIL has received a EMD GP40 and a EMD SD40 that has replaced all three GP9 Highhood that were used for years on there short line. Now it’s time for the Adrian and Blissfield to get there’s, recently the ADBF has acquired 4 GP40s from the Lake State railway so it’s east to assume the GP9s days are number. I hope you enjoyed our documentary on what could be one of the 9s last run.
    Now what you guys are reading all this for, the story about what happened. While the ADBF only crawls along there main not only I, but my still photographer Friend and also driver on this chase Charlie like to chase at quick speeds and Maximum our chases when we travel places. With that Driggs Road follows the tracks close from Blissfield to Palmrya so it’s the place most foamers go on there time chasing the ADBF. As you saw in my video we shot all the way down Driggs but decided to favor a shot of a old milestone in a field close to the crossing instead of taking the basic shot due to the train having no cars coming back. After shooting the shot at the milestone we sped off at I’d guess about 40 miles a hour as we approached the crossing but as we got close to the crossing Charlie slowed down to 20/25 MPH but took his eyes off the road. At the tracks the road S curves across the crossing and Charlie paying attention to the train approaching the crossing didn’t crank the wheel hard enough to cross the crossing in time. While this was bad it wasn’t bad enough for us to crash, what got us was Charlie slammed on the breaks when he resized his mistake and with the loose gravel we just slid right off the road. To be honest with you guys we’re lucky we didn’t roll with how deep that ditch was but we will take all the luck that we can get with that. Our train stopped and the crew got out and asked if we were okay and continued on when they realized all was good and they couldn’t help with much. After they left we called a tow truck that pulled us out and got us back on the road. All that was broken on the car was a flooded out speaker do to water coming into the passenger side of the car along with a flat tire that we ended up fixing at a discount tire a few miles down the road. While it was crazy this happened it wasn’t that big of a deal for what it was. I look at this as a good story to tell and I hope you enough our story.

      I was just gonna say it’s definitely an ex NHN GP9…. I live right near the Ossipee Aggrigates here in New Hampshire. I’ve watched that same 1759 for many years

    Great shots and those weird cement raised signals are cool! Also with the ditch thing sometimes life throws us curveballs. One time I was catching trains and turned around into a snow covered ditch. I thought it was solid ground but don't let looks deceive you. Stay safe and keep up the great camera work!

      As I recall, at one point the railroad wanted to upgrade those signals, but the Blissfield historical society asked for them to stay.

    12:03 those looks like wigwag mounts
    i did a bit of digging and if i'm correct the nyc owned this line until they merged with ns and later this railroad and the nyc supposedly uses wigwags so maybe it would've been similar to the ones used on the n&w

    If you can't chase and drive then don't before you kill someone! Why I hate chasing with crowds, too many morons in this hobby.

    Lenawee = Len-ah-weh
    Doesn't make sense. Neither does Adrian. I lived in Ta-cum-seh.
    If you ride on North Raisin Center Road between the two there's an excellent elevated trestle on the River Raisin.

    Please stop adding a goofy "er" suffix to railcars that are properly known as "tank cars.". Leave the "er" suffix to the general car type, as in hopper, reefer, etc.
    Thanks.
