- Hi. This is Part 1 of my discussion on the Landing Gear System, where we look at the different shock absorber on the Landing Gear. We look at the different types of shock absorbers and the functions of a shock absorber.
Then we look at the oleo pneumatic shock absorber and see how this absorber cushions the aircraft's weight while landing.

Does the flow metering pin make the shock damping more progressive? Im more it is compressed, the harder is it to compress it further.
Yes that is right!
I have a question: Why the shock absorber has to be fully extended when the gears are retracted ?
When the gears retract, the landing gear bay in the fuselage is designed such that the gear can retract smoothly and safely only when it is fully extended. A space saving measure on the fuselage!

Oleo name is interesting. Air and oil pressures working both against and in tandem with each other. Is oleo an acronym ?
Yes, I like the way you put it: Working against and in Tandem!
Oleo is not an Acronym. It just means something related to OIL!
@@JxJAVIATION thanks for.reply. Reminds me of the term oleo used for margarine in days gone by. It was basically oil, so makes sense.

There is part 2 and part 3 for the landing gear. Could be helpful
over all its a nice video but at 4:05 when speed reduces the oleo compresses and not the other way arround, the more speed the more lift less weight is laying on the struts therefore it decompresses when speed reduces the wings generate less lift the plane becomes heavier on its truts therefore it compresses

why do we need hydraulics? Why can't the air just compress/decompress on its own?
The compression is more controlled and regulated using Hydraulics!
