  • journey of exploration by Barbara Stewart A 2 years journey canoe trip into the everglades/10,000 islands survival trip with 8 months preparation for the grueling trip through the sawgrass and mangrove jungles of florida's frontier. they produced this part on vhs tape back then and i copied to dvd. they planned to make a part 2 with all the material but that plan didnt work out. around the late 50's think. a picture of the original everglades. barbara is the sister of a friend of mine is how i got the copy. a treasure of how it was back then. gone but not forgotten.

They do just not many that can do it like lots of older folks did when young. Getting back 6 hour run to camp or walking 5 miles to get a battery out of your truck !! hehe
Hated getting locked out of our camp in the fakahatchee strand or running over to doug henry's camp for dinner back when times were good . Wardens use to rotate between camps at time for dinner and sleep . Last time out I found marked trails in bear island and big cypress . Sold my buggy to the owner of pelican bend restaurant - isle of capri , sold the flats boat before the idle or speed ideal zone went in to effect . Memory's are good . Even went to a cook out at your guys camp once . I get a bit fuzzy with names today . Did your camp have man that that watch watched over it that went by Mr Roberts or Mr Jim ? We used to get elderberry home brew and vegtables from the camp on the west side on the road a bit farther south and drop of some meat . Oh the good ole days !

1hardluk no. where we hunted was back of oasis ranger station. probably about 7-8 miles north. they leased land from the collier's back in late 40's i think. early 50's that's where the film was made that we discovered couple years back and i put on you tube as it as quality couldn't be improved. my first trip there was about '58. last time for me was '87 i think. they had to tear down and remove cabin couple of years later. all seems like a dream now.

Your videos just make my day . These two are a tough pair . Todays generation will have no idea on what they have missed by not getting to spend time closer to nature where they live . Way more gators today than when this film was shot and most people today can not believe it could get below 30* down in the glades , Wrong !!
Thank you for posting this video .

rcruz003 imagine so. her brother is a neighbor friend he had it on a old vhs tape and let me borrow it. i copied on dvd and eventually put on you tube. she is in her 80's now and living in philadelphia. did you see the "new" version of the old 1950'/ glades i recently put on you tube? the quality cant be improved but enlarging helped some. had original music but had to remove couple of songs so about 8 minutes in middle has no music. seems to be a little better. i named early glades 1950's maybe you will find it a wee bit better!

i live close to her brother and originally got vhs tape and put on dvd. then decided to put on you tube as i have lots of videos already on you tube. that way more people could see it! very good and interesting i thought. about that same time i was hunting big cypress near ochopee. we had a cabin and swamp buggy then. all gone now. they planned to make another movie with film they had but never did. cost too much i think. david

Nope wrong camp area . . Last time I had my buggy out the alley had been fenced so no access there . A friend with his buggy and mine were gona make a 4 day trip out to a small dry pine island we had camped out of when hunting in the area . Tents and tarps camping ! . It was a little south of Paul Franks fly in camp . Water was so high we were floating more than touching ground right out of oasis and never made it more than 3 maybe 4miles in and gave up. Would have been better off in the flats boat that day . Might have been around '91 , '92 I think . Getting a buggy weighed and sticker with the park service , tail light !! Wife laws like on you were on a paved road sort of took all the joy out of it at that point . Sold the buggy after that trip . Even my old photos have about faded away to old age .
Photo below is the only one you can still well . All cleaned up for the swamp buggy parade . My future wife and long time hunting buddy and son around '76 maybe .

1hardluk jimmy used to have place next to oasis where you could park buggies and get parts and fixed if needed. he had to move. we hiked to where cabin used to be in 2004. was dry then as you can see on one of the videos. gators were in what few water holes there were left. after jimmy left they parked buggy across highway were some other buggies where kept there for a price.

nice! i knew her brother and he had a old 8 track of .trip and i copied to dvd. he called barbara and was okay to put on you tube. since then she has died and her brother also. seems like all gone as her then husband died long ago. they wanted to make a part 2 as had lots more film but would cost too much and not much of a market back then. dont know what happened to the film. sad
