    Leo's death in this movie is the angriest I've ever been at a film. I (watching it at home) had to pause the film and rampage around my house for at least 15 minutes in a fucking violent fury at the sheer injustice of it all. Which, man, when a movie makes you that angry... that's a good movie.

    The Departed isn’t just a remake of the Hong Kong film Infernal Affairs, but it is also loosely based on the real-life Boston Winter Hill Gang. Martin Scorsese interweaved fact and fiction seamlessly, which makes the remake wholly original.

    • @littleboxxes
      @littleboxxes 3 года назад +11

      Yes! Jack Nicholson's character is based on Whitey Bulger, who did have a man on the inside. Over the years of working as an "informant" for the FBI (during which time he gave zero evidence that they didn't already have and lead to zero new arrests) he was able to murder like a dozen people with impunity, due to the protection afforded to him from his crooked FBI handler, agent John Connolly. Fascinating stuff.

This film just locks you in and the way Scorsese maintains momentum and tension for the whole film is incredible. It's one of the things Scorsese does really well with his films - pacing. They are quite often very long but he knows exactly how to draw you in and keep you riveted right through to the end. He is a curator of cinema (Hugo being his love letter to it's inception) and has long championed the proper storage of film elements, their restoration and re-issue to keep them alive. He has a love for old British films in particular the work of Powell & Pressburger - you can't do wrong by looking at some of their work and understanding how film can work as art as well as entertainment.
    Gangster films - well I can't help but think you should always go back to the early days when you start to explore a genre and the best often had James Cagney in them "Public Enemy", "Angels With Dirty Faces", "The Roaring Twenties"", "White Heat" -
    Oh and you can't call yourselves movie buffs if you haven't seen "Goodfellas" - sort it out!

      Certainly the most shocking

    • @osmanyousif7849
      @osmanyousif7849 3 года назад +2

      Honestly, the whole film is so convoluted. Now don't get me wrong, the elevator scene was the most shocking twist that made me drop my drink when I saw it. Like the first time I watched The Departed, I didn't see that coming.
      But at the same time, it doesn't make any sense. Like how is Trooper Barrigan a mole? The movie establishes the Frank Costello met Colin as a kid, but when did Frank met Barrigan? And WHY was Barrigan doing this? Like there's no foreshadowing of Barrigan's motives. And yeah, maybe Frank did this to cover up his bases, and added a few moles in, just in case one mole got outed or didn't progress/make it far enough into the police force to be useful; but WHY does Barrigan know about Colin, but Colin doesn't know about Barrigan? I mean they were in the SAME training class, for crying out loud. Did Barrigan get turned later? I mean if we the audience are gonna go with the assumption that Barrigan's the mole and knows about what Colin's been doing and maybe Barrigan was only planted just to keep an eye on Colin, HOW does Barrigan know that Frank was an FBI informant? Colin, who has reached one of the HIGHEST RANKS of the State Police, doesn't even know about it and only found out about it due to a single journal entry from Captain Queenan. But that's because Billy told him, and Billy knew because some literal random drugged-up dude knew that he interrogated, because of LITERALLY WHATEVER REASON. I mean what's that dude's story?
      Now even if Barrigan WAS assigned by Frank to be a mole and keep tabs on Colin and that somehow he also snuck into the room and found Queenan's journal to learn that Frank's also a rat, in the film, Barrigan literally says, "Costello was gonna sell us to the FBI.". So HOW would Barrigan know that Frank was planning to sell them out? And WHY would even the FBI care? If Frank Costello was the FBI's rat and Colin and Barrigan were helping him, wouldn't Colin want to help Frank? Like would the FBI be psyched that Colin was doing the ground-work for them (I mean he keeps Frank out of trouble so they could keep giving him information.)?
      Also, the whole FBI plot with Frank being a rat, is only in The Departed BECAUSE of the whole bases around Whitey Bulger (who Costello's character is based on), which I can understand. But if I'm being honest, it really doesn't add anything to the film and would only make the plot sound more complicated than it needs to be. I guess Martin Scorsese and the writers thought that one of the themes should be what Mr French said, "It's a nation of f***ing rats.".
      Plus, once Barrigan kills Billy, then Brown, and then tell Colin that they have to stick together (But WHY exactly, if they're the only moles left?), Colin kills Barrigan? And for what reason? You see in the original movie Infernal Affairs, it makes sense, since Chan (who's suppose to be Billy's counterpart) calls the police to meet him at the building where he meets Lau (who's basically Colin's counterpart), so when Chan brings Lau downstairs, he's literally bringing him into police custody. Lau then kills the character who would be Barrigan's counterpart, because he needs a fall-guy, since Chan already told the cops he has the mole in custody. But in The Departed, Billy hasn't told anyone about Colin, not even Trooper Brown. So now that Billy and Brown are dead, there really is no reason to kill Barrigan. They really could have both gone home and left those two there. Also, if you pay attention to the scene when Colin tries to cover the mess, you have to ask yourself HOW Colin would come up with a story that would explain this to the police. He says Barrigan attacked him, but wouldn't they tell from forensics that Billy punched him? I mean, they don't even give us Colin's complete made-up story to the police for why he was there.
      It's just all not coming together.

    Funny when you implied that the rat/mole in the FBI seemed a little too convoluted and far-fetched at times because this is inspired by actual events not very far off from the movie.

    I feel that the main reason why Jack Nicolson's character is so "eccentric" or can be so "eccentric" is because he IS a PROTECTED FBI informant. He feels untouchable, and it's made him giddy weird. Also, if you didn't know, this movie is sort of a take on Whitey Bulger, who was also a protected FBI informant. Finally, you two did great! I've watched reactions to this and some get all screwed up and don't get the ins and outs, but you two got it all. Well done!

    Look up Whitey Bulger, the Jack Nicolson's character is loosely based on him . He murdered with impunity for years in Boston because he was a protected FBI informer and his brother was coincidently the leader of the Massachusetts State Senate. The movie playing in the background when DiCaprio finds out Costello is an FBI informant is titled "The Informant" which John Ford won an Oscar for in 1935 or 36 I forget.

    As to the "this isn't Scorsese's best work" you are absolutely right. Most feel this won as kind of a career achievement award, or to makeup for all the earlier films that should have won. It is a good film no doubt, but certainly not the level of some of his other films, but this is the one that they voted as best picture.

    Love this movie. Helps that I am from Massachusetts so when things are based here, I am a little biased, but it's also a great movie. I loved the film when I saw it in the cinema & at the end everyone laughed when the camera pans up after Matt Damon’s character to show the rat outside the window. The film took the use of ‘X’ from the original Scarface from 1932. Taxi Driver, Goodfellas, Casino, Raging Bull, The Wolf of Wall Street, Mean Streets, Shutter Island & The King Of Comedy are all great Martin Scorsese films as well as The Departed. Silence is on my watchlist as I still haven’t seen it, whilst the Irishman was a bit too long.

He also makes them so entertaining which is an underrated gift as a director. DeNiro grounds the film, but Sharon Stone (who was nominated for a BA Oscar for her role) and Joe Pesci really shine! And might I suggest two more American greats: David Fincher (another talent with a knack for making stylish, thoughtful films with mass appeal) and Steven Soderbergh. You two are great!
