Health Professional here....l've used alternately / both virgin unrefined cold-pressed virgin oil and / or coconut oil. I also do a lot of literature research about soooo many components of items and activities l include in my lifestylre....diet/ fitness/overall health / mindbalance. Wellness & emotional balance
I concur regarding the effectiveness Mediterranian diet. I have also been a lifelong intermittent diet participant: not so much by plan: it just always suited me & my lifestyle....long before the terms evolved.
I was part of the "nurses study" in the 1990s.
I was one of the first 9 diabetic educators in my state....our generated/national data encouraged insurance companies to support patient educational and important part of patient condition management.
I have also studiedc(since the early 2000s) a lot of the anti-neogenesis properties of many foods....that inhibit growth of cancer cells....now often used at cancer treatment facilities/hospitals that help keep people healthier.... by using foods that discourage cancer cells proliferation by using foods that cause cancer cells not to be able to produce capillaries that provide capillaries to feed cancer.....my favorite foods with anti neo-genesis properties are basil, dandelion greens, mint varieties, oregano, chives, etc etc. Summary: feed your body with the addition of tasty & nutritious foods that prevent cancers from achieving access to nutrients: antineogenesis.
      I have inherited good genes....
A family history of longevity...and decades of fitness activities....including endurance cycling and hiking: trails & mountains.
I am now in my 60s....very healthy on all parameters..... NO FACIAL WRINKLES OR SAGGING & CLEAR SKIN. I LOOK AND FEEL AS WELL AS WOMEN HALF MY AGE.
I HOPE THIS MAKES SENSE....I THOUGHT IT MIGHT ADD TO YOUR CONVERSSTION. I "SPREAD THE WORD" WHENEVER I CAN TO INTERESTED PEOPLE. ......I BELIEVE IN SHARING GOOD INFORMATION.....AND THE TRUTH IS THAT MOTHER NATURE HAS PROVIDED US WITH SO MUCH TO HELP US......BUT WE HAVE TO LEARN HOW TO USE WHAT WORKS!!!!

Hey everyone. I know this is off the topic but most of us on these sites are health conscious so I wanted to share what some may already know-the food industry is treating our fruits and vegetables with APEEL to make them last longer. Do research into this devious plan bankrolled by the villainous Bill Gates. There is a cleaning product from the UK with the same name but it's not what I'm writing about but rather a coating applied to food that cannot be removed and appears to be rather toxic. Do not buy food with an APEEL label.

Unfortunately, there are a lot of crackpot ideas on the Web,, including the idea rhat we should give up all oils. And there is a concerted, even fanatical , idea that all seed oils are bad, because they contain omega 6 fatty acids. And vegetable oils are included ( I thought olives were a fruit) These posts completely ignore the fact that omega 6 is an essential fatty acid for the body. And of course olive oil contains significant omega 6 oil. It's sad that people believe these crazy posts. We should always remember that olives and their oils formed the bedrock of the earliest civilisations. The trees are incredible. They look as if they could be dead, but they produce this wonderful food.

i think you should compare it to the coconut oil crowd. It seem to me anyone who eats olive oil eats more healthy in general then the vegetable oil, crisco crowd but not necessarily the coconut oil crowd. so if you said people who eat olive oil have 30 percent less cancer then those who eat coconut oil regularly would mean a little more because we could actually decide the oil was the key factor and not diet in general. Though their diets are often different too.

This is a great and neccessary discussion, thank you for posting this. I agree 100% with the points made by Dr Moss. Olive oil education is so much needed so this is brilliant. This 'real superfood' is so beneficial to health. I cook with EVOO only and dress salad with it almost every day. IMO one of the best types of EVOO is Kalamata, named after the town in Greece where the PDO oil is harvested. It is not the cheapest but possibly the greatest. Kalamata olives are rich in oleic acid, a type of MUFA linked to improved heart health and cancer-fighting properties. They're also a good source of iron, calcium, copper, and vitamins A and E'. Hope this helps. Sending love and best wishes from a healthy 68 year old in the UK 👍

Great information. John Loves Spain mentions olive oil from Kalamata, which happens to be a favourite oil of mine as well. It has a peppery flavour which I particularly like. But the important thing to know is that regardless of origin, olive oils which have a pronounced peppery flavour typically have a high content of oleocanthal, a polyphenol which has some very interesting anti-cancer, anti-inflammatory and anti-platelet properties. Oleocanthal is also known to have ibuprofen-like effects and a common analogy is low-dose ibuprofen and low-dose aspirin. So if you feel almost a burn or a stinging sensation in the back of your throat when tasting an olive oil, that is actually a good sign.

My other question would be whether just eating olives might be at least as good, but the study doesn't address that. I eat about a dozen olives (canned low salt) and a teaspoon of EVOO per day for some years along with nuts and avocado. Per the polyphenol explorer olive have a much higher concentration of polyphenols than oil, however as you pointed out there is the processing issue. My guess is that EVOO in Greece, etc, is much higher quality than almost al the normal brands on our store shelves.

Did you know that cooking with olive oil does not produce aldehydes which are produced with other oils and fats. Did you also know the reason Italians cook with olive oil and butter is because it is the most stable form of oils and can withstand high temperature as well as tasting good and is good for the heart.

Linseed is Flax Seed, and so is a "seed oil"..... Olive is a fruit which the processing of is more minimal compared to the more industrial Flax Seed Oil.
      Trivia related to Linseed Oil:
The traditional floor covering known as "Linoleum" is made of Linseed Oil and sawdust/wood fibers. That industry has been supplanted by "vinyl" flooring in the U.S. Today, Linoleum must be imported. Belgium still has quality production of genuine Linoleum. BTW, Linoleum is considered a healthy floor covering, not emitting harmful "off-gases" characteristic of plastics.

The study talked about in this video, isn't a controlled one but based on self-report. That's hardly scientific data.
Being Portuguese, olive oil runs in my veins. I love it and use it every day. Yet, I came across a school of thought that states all processed oils are wrong for us as they contribute to the accumulation of plaque in the veins. The doctors who run the True North Health Centre in Santa Rosa, California, Dr Alan Goldhamer and Dr.Michael Klapper after treating their patients with water fast, they transition them to a whole plant-based diet without SOS - salt, oil and sugar. Their approach makes more sense to me as any oil taken out of its source is unnatural, therefore harmful. It's not harmful if eaten through the olives as the fat ratio in each olive is balanced.
Despite this being logic and certainly true, I haven't been able to give it up. It's a cultural addiction, hard to resist. It was easier for me to become vegan.
There are a lot of myths surrounding the health benefits of oils. In India it's the case of coconut oil and ghee, an oil made from boiled butter. Surprisingly, Indian women prefer olive oil to moisturise their hair, an expensive commodity in a country that does not produce it.
Oils were originally extracted to use as medicine for topical use. In my culture, olive oil is widly used for a number of skin ailments, from snake and insect bites, to a moisturiser, to baby rash (I used it on my sons) and even to heal castrated pig's wounds.
How it made its way to the food chain must have been due to food scarcity or as an internal medicine for malnutrition.
May God grant me will power to resist it.

For several years I have been using olive oil in the kitchen and have banned other fats, such as margarine. As a result, my bowel function is so good that constipation is virtually a thing of the past.
Good bowel function is very important for detoxification and the health of other organs in general.
I only regret not starting it earlier.

I am sceptical. In Spain, people eat way more than 2 or 3 tablespoons per day, same is true for Greece, yet cancer deaths are still prevalent and on the rise. Maybe these studies would be true if you were leading a healthy life, meaning exercising, eating good stuff and added to that the olive oil.

@@bonnieupton4114 Look for organic extra virgin olive oil. Take a teaspoon and fill it with the olive oil, put it in your mouth and taste it slowly and then swallow it slowly, you should feel a tickle or slightly warm feeling in your throat. Also put a small amount in the fridge in a glass container it should get solid within a day or 2.

I have some acquaintances who say they are specialists in olive oil because they have been using it for over 50 years, but I warn you that they are specialists only in its use, they do not understand anything about health 😃, they are, 1 Italian, 1 Spanish and 1 Portuguese, they say that the best olive oil is from Morocco and Tunisia. I buy it from Palestine at a convenience store here in Toronto and it smells beautiful.

That is because the climate is somewhat stressful for the olive tree. The more stressed the plant, the higher the polyphenol content. My favorite olive oil is from Tunisia.

What is considered a considerable amount of olive oil? Because I've noticed the western interpretation of the Mediterranean diet is that we use copious amounts ..when in fact traditionally we cook our food then mostly add it raw over the food once cooked, & not as much as most people think we use.

This needs checking. However, glad he mentioned that it has to be virgin olive oil, and I believe that it should be cold pressed - I.e. limited refining. However, olive oil is omega-6 not the healthy omega-3 so it really is down to the virgin oil
Not the oil that’s used for cooking.

This was a huge study in terms of the number of people who were included. It’d be interesting to me to see the original data, and sources. No doubt you’ve heard of the Gerson Therapy, and I believe one book states that hey eliminate all oil during the cancer therapy. With olive oil being used for so long & an important part of the Mediterranean diet, This study does make sense.
