In this video, I take a look at the current state of decoders in Identity V and discuss why they're struggling. I also talk about some alternative survivors that you can pick in place of decoders, and why they might be a better choice for the current meta.

I never even play decoders anymore. The cipher rush still happens with other survivors who can survive better. It makes me so sad because my Mech skins get no use anymore lol
Being honest, as a hunter main I would probably most likely go after decoders, since it helps slow down cipher progress and also due to their weaknesses as well
This mentality is why I go composer with 9-12. In mid tiers, I don't trust my teammates to do proper rescues so I hope I run into chase-only hunters to waste their time for the team (but they don't chase me😢)
This is true for the high ranks, but I always lose when there is no decoder in the team at mid ranks, so it depends on the rank, I think.
I'd say based on players and how the match itself runs , really depends on who the hunter finds maybe ??

As a former S badge Explorer main I can confirm. Lower tiers might be okay, but in higher tiers, you typically become a liability for all the reasons Phoenix mentioned.
One thing that wasn't mentioned in the video however is that NetEase changed when you can do map selection in rank. They made it available much sooner (around griffin rank) which results in the hunter knowing EXACTLY where the decoder is right off the gate giving you a massive disadvantage as a result.
The only way you can really counter this is by having 2 decoders spawn in 2 different spots far away from one another forcing the hunter to choose 1 of the 2 while the other 2 survivors are recuse/assist based because bring someone who can kite or contain is probably pointless. Having a team with VC is almost all but a requirement also.

Can't say I disagree with anything mentioned lol. I'm an A badge Mind's Eye in Griffen ranks and usually I'm okay with kiting due to her ability to see through walls if they're close (her vault speed is gross though). However, area select has been the Bane of my existence since they added that to griffen because the hunter always seems to pick a tile next to me. So I've been playing rescuers and kiters as of late 😅
As an S badge TME na/eu i personally love area selection, even though im almost always chased first. If i spawn in op areas like god kites, run 912 and theres a support in the team i can kite really good most of the time. But of course that requires communication (i usually play in a 3 or 4 man comp)
@MrPuzzleCodes At least someone likes it lol. It feels like they spawn closer to me than usual and I don't have much time to get away since they can see me within seconds. Doesn't help that I play solo or with one other person usually lol.
This is especially true for lower ranks though. Decoders are naturally the weakest kiters in the game, and if beginners that know little of the game play decoders first, the results will often look very.. one-sided. Playing characters like First Officer will give you the ability to easily kite the hunter in any scenario (pocket watch) do easy and consistent rescues (pocket watch tide and illusion) as welll as decoding faster after using your watches. With buffs like brewing effect and both watches used, your decoding gets really good!

everything you say is true, but hiding can be a game changer. i main mech/minds in alicorn and just hide first thing if i feel like the hunter is going to go for me/wait for other surv to ping where hunter is. it loses decoding time but you can easily make up for it with the decoding buffs, and if the hunter decides to try and find you, knowing how to hide well can really screw them over. either theyll give up early and you can decode or theyll search until most ciphers are over half or finished and even if you get caught you just wasted a bunch of time

As a minds eye minds she deeply needs a buff on vaulting
But when I use minds eye I could kite properly with her by using palettes
While mechanic is very slowly and her skill makes her slow too ,
I once kited a geisha ( my main )
To 200 seconds 5-1 ciphers 3 stuns and made the hunter surrender while the rest of the teams who weren’t decoders decoding

I agreed, being decoder suck, but it's just so fun playing Prisoner I couldn't stop playing him, but I still learned Painter and Magician as my kiters and Gravekeeper as my rescuer. Gotta be prepared.
Same, I have fun playing decoders but I usually have backups like doc, lawyer, and priestess just in case.
same! i'm a seer main but i'm personally more attached to decoders! my first decoder was mind's eye and tbh i love her playstyle + her slow vaulting forced me to learn how to mindgame and not vault all the time 😅 and now i mainly play prisoner (i have a whole collection for this silly guy lolol) but yep! i do both solo play and team play with friends, so i basically learnt how to play at least two characters from each role (i have this thing of learning a new character from time to time, it's fun trying out a new character and sticking to it for a while 😂)
To me the game is quite failing at being fun at this point. I get that rank is competitive and I get that there are stronger characters, the meta concept exists for a reason- but when I have to drop characters I like because otherwise I won't be of any good to the team, well, what did you even make those characters for? If your character does not have any kiting support, you're basically no good anymore. Easy as that. And that's oh so sad in my opinion. Doesn't really make me want to open the game so willingly any longer.
yeah definitely!! it hasn't happened to me yet because i barely play rank but i know about some people who got bashed for just wanting to play their main (mind's eye), all that because she's considered weak and not viable. that's why i would rather play qm (since it ain't as competitive as rank + you can have fun/practice and improve your skills), or in a team in which the others know that i want to play my character and, as it's not "so strong" as the rest of the characters, i will need some kind of assistance. but hey, you should play whatever character you want, especially if it's your favourite one! don't feel bad for it!
This used to be the case... until Lawyer's kiting got buffed so hard you can barely even call him a decoder anymore lol
This is why i use lawyer and explorer the most in the game and ignore the others those 2 decoders can decode and kite as well as sneak around and hide from hunters sight with their abilities maybe in the future we may get more decoder survivors like them
Okay but like, Lawyer can get a vaulting buff up to 12% and a speed buff up to 5%
Not to mention he cannot be terrorshocked.

He actually has the best survivavility among the decoders right now, followed by Explorer (people overestimate Prisoner and Composer abilities)
He is better than he used to be. I think we still need to see how good he will be!
Every prisoner I had in match gets downed first since recently. I manage a decent kites with him at times so I’m assuming it’s the players rather than the character.
lawyer is better than composer now since composer and lawyer has the same decoding speed but lawyer has more kiting tools now

Explorer is great time waster if hunters chase him first and this is seen in tourney play too. And lawyer buffs are really really good. Makes him a good kiter and he can avoid first chase with map or pull distance. Mech can decode in chair which is invaluable.
I rrly like Composer, he's a decoder when he can be and not a terrible kiter with his Speed Ability. Paired with Broken Windows and someone who can kite longer than 40s, you can use his Speed twice at minimum in a chase, without using anything consumable.
Not to mention its a great tool to rebound kite if you are rescued properly.
I once did a 5 cipher kite as mind’s eye just because the hunter was so tunnel vision locked on me as the decoder-
I honestly don't play decoders anymore due to the fact that other characters can cipher rush as well as a decoder. And the fact that your so vulnerable in chase makes you a cannon fodder for hunters in early game. I got fed up so i switched to antiquarian and bonk those hunters instead🤣

While I mostly agree with the idea that you don't need a decoder and that some are pretty bad, there is a lot of utility decoders bring to the table that this video completely ignores and why decoders should be picked in the first place. Specifically, mechanic, composer, and lawyer all have a very good utility which is their early game value. Assuming that spawns are being picked, decoders are generally going to be chased first which is a huge boon to know. As a decoder, you should start running immediately away from where hunter spawns. This basically means you start kiting before the hunter even finds you. Lawyer does this with his map, composer uses his speed, and Mechanic just prays but we will get back to her. When lawyer or composer do this correctly, you start the actual kite much later than normal. On some maps this can buy 30 - 60 seconds if done right. This way, it doesn't matter if you can't kite as long because 3 ciphers are most likely going to be done by the time you are put in the chair. And in this position it can be really hard for hunters to actually win. Mechanic is a little different though, she essentially hides her bot and dies away from it, then you sell the Mechanic as she finishes the bot cipher and that's also a tie. Or if the hunter kills the bot Mechanic can use the bot for body blocking or getting another cipher mostly done which should also result in a tie. None of this applies to the others because TME dies too quickly and can't do anything on chair, Explorer is too luck based on whether he hides correctly and where his pages are, and prisoner cipher rush is better than you think if he's not chased because the rescue cipher popping is a big deal but he can't do much when found because he doesn't have the speed or utility of lawyer and composer. This does NOT mean you should play a decoder every match but to say that playing a decoder in general is throwing your matches is not true either.
you havent played mechanic. play her and come back. she is so bad. her bot can barely last two ciphers (it can only decode one) she has little kiting ability. she decodes EXTREMELY slow so shes useless to her teammates by herself if her bot gets found, its game over.
she could only be useful in a team with vc but even then if that was the case they would use her in tournaments lol.
@@pea7422 I am sorry I didn't specify that I was mostly talking about tournaments and 4man vc. While I only have a couple hundred games with mechanic under my belt, I have 2 rank partners who have been and one still is S badge mechanic for over a year and a half now so I have a lot of experience in playing with them in teams. First the bot only needs to last one, a mechanic with max chair time being sold will die at 1 or 2 ciphers remaining, and since the hunter won't have max presence it would be very hard for the hunter to win instead of tie. This makes mechanic one of the best late round tournament hunters in the game. In Japan, they especially use her significantly with nearly every round 3 having one of the teams use her. While mechanic can't decode without bot she can still rescue, bodyblock, pass items, and make callouts. And if the hunter has killed the bot, that's still a lot of time bought for decoding especially if they are a single hit hunter. Also, the whole "only useful in 4man vcs" is only kind of true and most of the meta requires good communication to be effective such as forward, seer, female dancer, embalmer, cowboy, toy merchant, entomologist, batter, anti, and cheerleader . While all of these characters have uses without communication (mechanic does too since you don't need VC for your team to sell you) these characters play completely differently and aren't anywhere near as good without communication. My point wasn't and isn't that mechanic is even S tier or anything, but the utility she brings is still good and she's far from the worst character in the game. I would put her at the bottom of A tier personally.
Finally, I so so agree with you! Nobody has talked about this, 10-30% of decoding progress is good, but not too worth it if you compare it to kiters with 0%, but can kite very long, ill take an example, gravekeeper here has 85% progress, only 15% debuff, however, his graves are very powerful and counters chip hunters, and can also take 2 hits from it
Others can also be said like wildling, now this is a surprise, 25% debuff, and he can kite for around 120s, which is very powerful and the debuff is not enough compared to decoders.
I think decoders should be more focused on stealth and non-decoders should have longer decoding to make decorders worth using.
It could also make decoder gameplay scarier

I used to main Mind’s Eye but after all of these faster hunters coming out and the constant targeting that comes from them, I just don’t see myself playing as her anymore
It’s really sad because she’s my favorite survivor but I can’t seem to get out of a match alive with her unless I’m not solo queuing :(

I'm a main decoder back then, but I switch to rescuer or assist survivors because I always get found first, especially when playing Prisoner
A lot of this seems to be very broad without a lot of nuance. The overall point stands, and it’s definitely true for Mind’s Eye and the analysis of Prisoner is good, but you don’t mention how Lawyer’s recent buff could totally change his status (we don’t know yet). Composer is used in tournaments because he can also be a strong kiter due to his speed boost ability. Mechanic’s greatest strength is not decoding, but the ability to have essentially a 5th survivor active on the map, which can do things like open the gate, heal teammates, or even just feed tinnitus, even when she is on chair. For that reason she sees use in tournaments still even after her nerf, particularly when a team needs to go for a tie, she is a very solid tie survivor. She is often banned by hunters who want to play Bonbon because her cipher rush is so strong, even if she’s found early and the team sells, she can finish a cipher.
Also, Explorer is very good on some specific maps such as the largest ones, and also Arms Factory where the grass is thick, and he can essentially ignore the way hunters like Photo and Hermit slow down ciphers. Really Minds Eye is the only decoder who seriously should not be played at all.
Exactly. I don’t even know if Phoenix even considered the reason why certain decoders are used regardless of Sangria and Ithaqua. Sure, they are definitely not ideal but in certain cases, they definitely are really powerful. Prisoner+Mech as an example.
But I do agree with the rest of the points, decoders usually can’t raw kite for long unless given assistance from supports like Batter, Forward, Priestess, Antiquarian, Female Dancer, and Seer, hence why they aren’t used often in tournaments unless a certain team could pull off having an Explorer or Mechanic.
This is why my team has like 2 rescuers and 2 harasses. In tier 5
i agree with the decoding speed buffs not being eligible but when im playing explorer, (even high rank) they tend to lose me alot because of my hiding. and also explorer doesnt give vaulting notifications and also has a ms buff when he stands still. i definetely think hes slept on
the greatest thing about lawyer and explorer tho is not their non existent kiting ability ( well lawyer yes on a closed area) but their ability to hide because they can locate hunter. I've member been more frustrated than trying to find an explorer hiding on a random bush. As an A badge lawyer too, the map can really help u see where the hunter is going and just hide until they give up or they find you. either way U give precious time for ur team
Yooo exactly! Plus explorer is just too fun not to play lol. It also doesn't hurt that you can make up for lost cipher progress with pages after the hunter gives up. But even if the hunter doesn't stop looking for you your team is bound to make tons of cipher progress to punish while you're kiting the hunter by simply hiding lmao 🤣
A bit sad Kurt gets so dogged on for kiting ability and other decoders too because they aren't meant to kite, at least not for long anyways. In my mind decoders are supposed to have abilities that help them avoid getting near the hunter and if they do get in chase they can bring hunter to the kiter so the decoder can actually start decoding. Decoders are all about stealth and info

That's the reason why I am technically playing what i call rotater(I'm a Luca main) hunter knows where i am, but, i also know where they are coming from. Some are way too persistent to get me so i end up rotating for 3 ciphers or even 4, basically I'm buying a lot of time without depleting my teams' resources which gives us a higher chance to win, mostly it actually works out due to the most of the hunters basic persona build detention+trump card, they don't gain a lot of presence and end up chairing first survivor at 2 ciphers, especially if Seer is on the team
Playing on Asia, I cry when I see Mechs being picked. I'm sorry, but why do some of the worst kiters PICK the worst kiters. I get playing characters you like. I get playing characters with skins you think are pretty. But there's 3 other people in your team who want to rank up. And then you pick Mech on Moonlit and get stuffed in 20 seconds with no doll out.

The way I can cipher rush the hunter is by dancer +3 music boxes and in Les then 50 seconds it's done like you had LG with you
Honestly? Yeah I can see how an argument can be made that decoders are just not that powerful, I say this as a Lawyer main who used to have an A badge a year ago before I stopped playing as much due to external reasons
Before, decoders where the important but fragile part of the team, then they became a relatively strong support class since every decoder was also, in some capacity, a kiter after some reworks. But nowadays being a decoder can actually be a detriment because many high tier hunters (or even mid tier hunters that have learned the maps) now know the locations of the ciphers and where a decoder might possibly be.
And if you aren't a good kiter or your decoder character isn't well suited for kiting, guess what that means? A chair in the first minute for the team, which doesn't feel good and on occasion can prolong the match
and now, with area selection in griffin and above, hunters 100% know where the decoder is and where they will probably rotate to
As a B badge minds I would say she needs only walls

I dont think any character should be good at everything, like the meta has changed, as jt is impossible to win with now older hunters like violinist

This only partially true and here's why:
- Tournaments are completely different things
- Explorer is not that easy to find, for The Mind's Eye area selection became an advantage, cuz now u can hit your Cane always to know who is the hunter, since they know your whereabouts anyways. And just stealth, stealth like me 3 ciphers and you're good.
- Get better at raw kiting! Using 3 Perfumes and giving the hunter 5 hits is not the ideal situation for example. So a character might be weak if you are not that good at kiting
- rebound kite is rarely possible, that's true
p.s. I spawned at Leo's main as TME and SAW Wuchang ~30 meters from me, I was just looking at him and wanted to surrender. But you know, I still managed to kite 2+ ciphers.

Mechanic is a sandbag and not useful after all the nerfing she's got, you cannot change my mind on this, it's actually better to have a rock as a teammate than mech at this point
She is a glass canon and DEF requires your team to be good!
I just use Dancer as a decoder. She has good kiting potential as well as heal.

While I do agree that sometimes decoders can be a liability at times (I say this from experience as a Wu main, downing a Mech's robot constantly), I think the most important for a win, tie or loss match is always the team set up... and more importantly, how well they can cooperate with each other and the character they've chosen-
I'm still relatively new to griffin rank but from what I can see, you can have a decent set-up of people from an outside perspective... but still lose HORRIBLY if those using the characters are mediocre with their characters or don't have a balanced harmony with the team as a whole. (-Ahem- I say this from a match I had with an ench who could barely kite but proceeded to be toxic with the rest of her team.)
Though, this is just personally my own take on it 🤷♀️
you're right tho! that's why peak tier players/tournament players are so good! they have lots of experience as most of them have been playing for a while now + as a result, they've mastered the characters they main + they have an amazing teamwork and gamesense, which imo is the most important thing for survivor side. if you combine all these, you get a perfect team comp in which everyone knows how to play individually (their character) and in a team, especially if it's a well coordinated team with vc!

Actually with you mentioning VC... it brings me back to a time where I was in a custom 5 person match in discord VC-
I was hunter and went mute/deafened for a little while, but decided to undeafen just to see how things were going on their end... and my GOD it was probably the most terrifying thing for the opposing team to communicate so much and tell the others when you're switching target LMAO
So sad because I want to play minds eye so bad I love Helena but I'm just not good enough if a kiter

I remember playing as explorer did a good 3 cipher kite after vio tried find me for a good 30 secs since i was hidding
But we lost bcs late rescue (idk why they were randos nearby)
+ At primed instead of healing to force hit then prime rando just stayed here...

Actually, mind’s eye is born to kite =))) hunter will lose 8 seconds if they don’t move when she use her skill, and if they do, they will waste more time just to find her.
However in high ranked no one do that, hunter with great control power will just find who which they counter (I’m Ann main and I often chase the first officer or journalist first)
Mech is a very bad decoder and a very situational kiter, the last update destroyed her.
Who goes after Doctors first😂😂
she can be a pain in the ass if you let her alive because she will keep on healing herself/others, so getting rid of such annoying roach is actually viable ig (yeah,, i hate doctor mains and i target them as soon as i see them. once i literally stopped chasing this explorer who i already had chaired, and went after this doctor, tunneled her until she was out. it felt so good.)

I think they nerf Postman's decoding speed to 10% instead of 20%. But I still love Postman as decoder/kiter/assist
It’s 20% in total due to Postman+Letter person getting the buff. Pre-nerf was 40+ Decoding
Composer: Am I a Joke to you?
I just recently started playing this game and I really liked Mind's Eye and Composer. However, I realized that they have very low survivability and are just fodders for hunters so I changed to using assists instead.
Remember to play what you enjoy playing the most. All characters are viable to play, just some are more "serious"!
Explorer can turn small and not having to worry being found, although if you are unlucky and get caught, its more likely you lose

Hello !! Violinist , Nightwatch and somehow a Prisoner main here ( NO BADGE OR ANYTHING BY THE WAY , DONT TRUST ME TOO MUCH ) , I don't play survivor rank much because of the queue time but I'd say it's really based on the players and if they're used to those characters .
I've seen Mind's eye and Mechanic **mains** ( emphasis on mains since most people who don't kite well as TME and Mech are people who've never used them before ) kite longer than containing characters . Does that mean containing characters are bad ? Well , of course not !
It's really the player and the hunter's knowledge of the character(s) and who they're facing , also a bit of a reason why I don't really believe in a " meta " .
Now this might just be because I'm just in cobra hunter tier but I've seen doctors make the mistake of waiting pallets against Violinist and Perfumers waste their Euphoria on strings as I wait at their perfume area .
Although I'd agree with how their survivability itself is pretty bad , some might even call them weak which I wouldn't disagree with since they genuinely have no kiting abilities to help prolong their kite unlike maybe Prisoner and Lawyer ?
TLDR : Not on the characters , its all on the players and their strategies or knowledge . No character is truly weak ( depends on how you interpret " weak " ) but some have little to no kiting abilities .
I just want to play decoders and , mind eye has weak in vault over window , I wish they buff her skill . Hunter stop being pester on mind eye . There others are easy to catch than her.

you been kiting more 60sec but you need help from team , people don't help obs hunter which give more time distracted
