I've never been skiing or seen this much snow in my life! Your videos are so beautiful. I found out I got into the JET program last week and I requested Aomori. I hope I get that placement, and that I get to see these beautiful mountains!
Congratulations! To be fair, there are great mountains all over Japan, so wherever you get placed I'm sure you'll love it! (Personally I'm crazy about Tohoku- Iwate, Akita and Aomori in particular.)
This is beyond words! I was in Hakkoda couple of days ago and I just watched this video now. Definitely going back to Hakkoda for winter hike. Thanks for sharing your tips.
I can't believe you don't have more views, Quinlan! Your videos are fantastic, the filming quality is worthy of a documentary. Keep it up, I can't wait to go experience it myself in Japan!
I am watching this from Arkansas. I can still go outside time to time but not recommended. Watching the video like this makes me feel like I am really out there. Thank you for the great video.
Enjoying Climbing Snowy mountains vicarously with you. I only climbed/hiked a Mountain ( considered an Easy climb - for beginners really) once in my native tropical Philippines going down through a trail of small waterfalls. A very different landscape from that of Northern Japan. Its wonderful though reaching The top seingThe view & feeling The cool wind on your Face. Thanks for sharing your beautiful videos.😊👍🏻
I am rationing your videos to watch them during weekends since we are forbidden from leaving our homes for any reason. They help ease my craving for nature as I am used to running in the mountains during weekends.
How weird (and exciting) to be hiking up a mountain and a stranger calls you by name! It was nice to see you stop and chat with Mihai. It is great to expand my growing channels-to-watch list with collabs (how I found you) and just chance meetings like this.
Your passion for hiking and Japan comes through so nicely in these videos! It’s so nice to watch! I also really appreciate your concern for safety and teaching good habits. That’s important because I’m not a snowshoer but id like to try it one day!
Hi, your videos inspired me to actually live my dreams. My sister and I are trying to plan a trip to japan, hopefully northern Japan. So for our birthday our plan is to go hiking in Japan.
Came here from Sharla's video. This is incredibly beautiful! Once I move to Japan, I really want to explore the north. I really want to experience Aomori, I've seen so much beautiful things about it
Thanks for recommending me this place, took the ropeway to the top and was rewarded with an amazing view! Didn't manage to get a guide though, prob can consider it once the Covid situtation dies. Will definitely be back
I hope things go well with the global situation so we can all get back outside. I'm very lucky that there are no restrictions on the mountains or national parks in Iwate as of yet.
Awesome video as always. Love it out there. I always tell people if they are going up there and don’t have a guide to make sure to carry a gps. If you’re unfamiliar with the area, don’t rely on your phone. White out conditions with strong wind is no bueno. I’ve been up there before when it was so cold my iPhone wouldn’t work. If you do carry a phone make sure to keep it in a water proof bag. Also, been up there in bad conditions and my phone got moisture inside the charging input and shut down.....also in white out conditions. Also, know where the two refugee camps are and have them saved on your gps. You never know!
Yeah, I often have the same thing with my phone where moisture gets in and it can't be charged until hours later when it's completely dry. Definitely very good advice and information. We chose that day for the perfect weather forecast and were lucky that it turned out to be perfect conditions all day long.
Love every video and all your knowledge of the area. Looking forward to something that has a hint of spring in it! Or in this time of quarantine, some archived video you might have of festivals in Northern Japan.
awesome video!I have seen this kind of frozen tresses in other videos, I guess it’s zaoo and the weather was too bad to see anything as you have mentioned in this area it’s the same sometimes this kind of area just tends to be covered by thick fog and strong wind. However, in this video, it just shows you her 100% beauty, which is speechlessly generous. Great video great weather great scenery
Wow, you lucked out with perfect weather for trekking. Thanks as always, Quinlan. While delayed, hoping to get back to Hakkoda range maybe this fall. 😉🇨🇦🇯🇵
Thank you for these relaxing videos that have nothing to do with current events. If someone wanted to visit Northern Japan, which season would you recommend visiting in?
That's a tough question. I guess it depends on what you want to do. There are some great festivals in August. In mid September there's a hike where you can see the earliest fall colors on Honshu. In winter of course there's skiing, snowshoeing, snow festivals, etc. I love foraging for vegetables in the spring, and of course the cherry blossoms are nice. I guess I would just say to avoid the transitional times.. like after the leaves have fallen in autumn but before there's any snow. Or right now when the snow is mostly gone but there isn't the fresh green of spring just yet.
GoNorth Japan Thank you so much for getting back to me. My wife and I have been entering the idea of going in Autumn, that was before current events happened. With your great videos I have convinced her we should go north and stay away from the crowds and craziness of the south. Hopping another year we can make it. Please keep making great videos!
Incredible video that was shot so well! Thanks so much for giving us valuable information and wonderful sights. May I know if it's essential to rent ski-like snow shoes with the sticks that you're using to walk or are the normal snow shoes enough to just walk a little? No hiking or anything like that. Just wondering as we're not into hiking at all (esp without a guide) but wanted to walk around a bit to capture some nice views. Thank you!
I rewatched and marveled at the view of Mount Iwaki and a new name to me, Shirakami Sanchi. I did a little research as see that Shirakami Sanchi is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and the location of some of the last remaining untouched beech forests in Japan and remarkably remote for Japan.
Quinlan, I’d love to hear you talk about some of your favorite hikes that you’ve done in a future video, as well as some scary ones that you’ve been through! I’m curious what a bad day of hiking is like. 🤔
That's a great idea! One that sticks out in my mind was a Mt. Iwate ascent (Omisaka course) when the weather turned really bad and I had freezing rain and powerful icy winds threatening to blow me off the summit. I literally had to crawl on the rim of the crater the winds were so strong. I was genuinely frightened that I wouldn't make it back, though in the end I was ok.
I actually do work as a guide from time to time. Not a mountain guide, more like for general interpretation and tourism. (It's a very serious endeavor to get the mountain guide certification. Involves memorizing tons of data in Japanese and traveling to Nagano (far far away from here) for testing. Would cost a few thousand dollars and about a year to get, so I'm not going to try...)
To be honest I don't think I've ever gone to a ramen shop after hiking a mountain. As I get older, my desire to eat ramen keeps decreasing. (Crazy, I know!) One thing I have eaten several times after long hikes is chicken biriyani at this amazing Indian restaurant (Taj Indian Curry goo.gl/maps/1tYfNwNM6F1bpjMt7) that I believe is the best in Tohoku.
Oh, sorry. I’m from Tohoku but few people outside of Japan know about the region. So, your contents are the best ones that introduce outdoor attractions in the northern Japan. I don’t ski neither hike but I like going for trouts and salmon fishing in the northern Japan.
Love it! Man you put so much information and heart into it.
Thank you!
Thanks! Looking forward to someday being able to do a video together in Aomori!
Wow...that view is seriously amazing...you are so lucky!!!!

Really nice trip! All those snow-trees look like a fairytale! I’ll keep it in my mind for when I ever visit!
What a beautiful hike! Yes, I'd be nervous too looking over that slippy edge lol but so worth it. Thank you so much for filming and sharing! 🏔️
Thanks for watching!
those trees are fantastic looking!
The weather is prefect. Nice Video.
man on a day like today having to sit inside watching this really helps me. I wanna go to japan so bad lol

Another beautiful, beautiful video!
Thanks for these videos. They remind me of walking in the snow in the Utah mountains. Shame I can't anymore.
Aomori is my favourite place in the world ❤

Going foraging for wild vegetables tomorrow for the first time this year. We'll see if that works out to be a video.

That looks like amazing snowshoe conditions! You're super lucky :)

7:55 thinking about dinner again 😂
Thank you for sharing!
Amazing
Great Video. I am not brave enough to hike a ridge in the snow. Also, I am from Wisconsin. Go Packers!!
Wisconsinites unite!

You could just walk around the top of the ropeway in normal snowshoes if you're not planning on going too far!
NICE VIDEO!!
Great work on the video! Perfect weather! But seriously, that ridge did not look very safe at some parts.

I think you’re good with your social distancing up there 😉
Yeah, I'm very fortunate that it is easy to practice social distancing doing my normal thing of going up in the mountains...
Damn that's an amazing view even though you didn't make it to the tallest peak, I'm just wonder what was the distance you traveled on that hike?
I forgot to turn on my phone tracking app. But according to my google timeline (probably not 100% accurate) it was 4.3 km.
Amazingggggg! and very jealous lol
👍👍👍
blimey, every video of yours i watch with snow is wild to me. do you ever ski?
Yes, I ski! I haven't been skiing that many times this year.
@@GoNorthJapan thats a shame, make sure to think of me next time you go ahaha :D
Are you a guide by any chance? Because this is going on my bucket list and on my 1st trip to Japan I plan on doing this if possible

@@GoNorthJapan wow that is quite alot of money and time for such a thing and thank you for that bit of info too!
I really wanted to know after all those climbing you're treating yourself with nice ramen?

Are you Scandinavian heritage?
Tohoku is better place for Scandinavian to live in due to the cool climate.
I don't think so. As far as I know I've got mostly German, English and Irish heritage. But I'm from Wisconsin, which is a very cold climate!
Oh, sorry.
