I’ve made this and it’s a great success I added a bee feeder in the top for wild insects and they also feed on the mycelium growing on the wood chipping on the bottom layer/ pine cones......great video.thanks
Thanks for sharing this video. I am setting my students a task to work together to make a bug hotel. I can collect all the stuff I need now after watching you
This is a brilliant idea and it's wonderful to see someone advocating for the encouragement of invertebrates in the landscape versus their destruction. I imagine those bricks can hold moisture and it might not hurt to water the bricks when watering the plants. Does the planter have some drainage holes so moisture and plant roots can infiltrate into the bug house? I'm thinking of adding a few small drainage holes in the partitions, too. Might allow the tenants to travel between floors as well. I can't wait to build some of these in my yard and see who inhabits the layers!! Thanks for the inspiration!
agree, i'm itching to know the drainage too. I guess the planter must drain otherwise it would flood in a storm. thanks for your comment, helped me think it through...
Simply loved your passion and hardwork for insects. Indeed a rare video. I am conducting an online course- Gardening for Wildlife and I will recommending our students to watch your video. Great work. Thank you for sharing.
Could you do an update to see how successful this bug hotel was? What insects did you attract? I heard that it's best to make these hotels concave at the top so that it will collect rainwater to keep it moist for the bugs. Flat hotels will just have the rainwater cascade on its edges.
I may give this a try but wonder if you had a problem with mice nesting on the first level. Would it make a difference if it was raised up off of the ground, so mice aren't a problem?
Oh, sure, it's easy to build a bug house when you have SUPER SPEED! But us mere mortals take longer... How did you get those super powers anyway? (not my suspicious glare..) :-) Actually, this is very kewl idea. I think I'll give it a shot. Thank you for showing this.
+Sandy Rowley Do you know of a natural spray or something that I can use on my wooden deck to keep the big bees from burrowing into it? My husband wants to kill them, I would rather repel them.
+petmom ful lucky you, having wild native bees nesting on your property. Have you tried essential oils like peppermint? or creating a suitable habitat with an insect hotel and an area with tall grasses?
There is a big suitable habitat right behind our yard. Lots of woods. I have been using a peppermint castile soap spray today on the posts of my deck, and it seems to be pissing them off. I don't think my hubs will go for the insect hotel, but we will see.
um, the area you cleared was a bee habitat... ???? next time put the insect hotel next to the clumps of grass and weeds. weeds are super important nutrient rich foods for humans as well as wildlife.
+Sandy Rowley I get that, but we can't have weeds everywhere, can we? We have to clean up some weeds on our property. I mean, he just cleared a little spot, he did not clear out a huge area of weeds. I would like to find a natural way to kill the weeds in my lawn, but nothing works! My lawn looks terrible. I guess I do not understand why people want to attract bugs near their house. My husband hates all the bugs near our house and wants them dead! The bees burrow into our deck and destroy it! The wasps sting us! These little houses sure look cute, though. I just want to avoid chemicals entirely, in the house, on the lawn, etc. Also, is it true that we should not buy honey because the bee keepers give the bees sugar water, which ultimately contributes to the death of the colony? Sorry for all the questions, LOL, your comment seemed to show that you really care about bees and might be very knowledgeable about them.
+petmom ful Weeds are early foods for pollinators. Weeds also build the health of your soil. Weeds are indicators that the lawn or area has had synthetic fertilizers, pesticides and/do compaction.
Thank you. I still have to get them out of my lawn, tho, cause I live in an area where the lawns have to be kept nice. I want to avoid chemicals. The woods behind us, tho, are full of weeds, so the bugs have plenty of places to live, I guess. I don't want them in my deck, tho. They destroy the wood.

Great video tutorial, thanks for sharing. Is that a square wood base you're putting on the bricks or stone? What size bricks did you use?

Seconded! Please can you do an update
Is there a how to sheet on how to build this bug hotel, best one I have seen so far

Great idea! Do you place in a sunny or shady spot?

how good is that
How can you dislike this!?
Very cute :) but can someone tell me what a bug hotel is for? Does it have a specific purpose?
ladybugs. they are very helpful in a garden
I think lots of bugs could live in a bug hotel/motel.
I did this with my friend and I fill like a construction worker
are those seed balls certified organic? if not, they are treated with pesticides that can last 6 years!
